Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Has McCarthy played his way ahead of Thomas for next year or is he still MLTBT, most likely to be traded?
Brad Johnson
12:26
That's a good question. I've been saying all year that the DBacks will want to give McCarthy a long look this year because it's their best opportunity to do so. With the way he's played, they have to feel better about putting Thomas or even Varsho out there on the market. The common speculation is they'll work out a swap with the Marlins for pitching. Thomas for Max Meyer is pretty fair.
12:27
For now, I think we can proceed with the expectation that all four of Carroll, Thomas, McCarthy, and Varsho will play nearly full time.
Just a reminder folks, this is nominally a fantasy-only chat. I've taken some borderline questions because they have fantasy implications.

I'll also answer general prospecting questions

Ok, I'll try to interpret these. I don't think they need to do anything wild with their pitching. Jansen or similar would make sense, but Houck and Whitlock are both good closer candidates.
And they're pretty fringy as SP at the moment.
12:31
The rotation on the whole is stickier, we'll have to see who they enter spring with.
I do very much like Bello, either as a mid-tier SP or an elite RP.
I think he'll stick in the rotation, health allowing.
And they probably need SP more than RP.
12:32
I've been picking up shares wherever I can
I've said this before and I'll say it again - gimme all the pitchers with a strikeout per inning, tame walk rates, and 50%+ GB%

I've got pick 2 in our dynasty rookie draft. Anyone from this year's draft that you'd be hard pressed to pass on at #2?
Brad Johnson
12:33
Yea, assuming you're league is relatively deep and you're willing to wait on guys, Jackson Holliday and Druw Jones are my top targets.
12:34
It's possible someone will fill the role of Suzuki as a MLB-ready international star, but I'm not aware of who that would be at this time.
I just haven't heard any rumors related to who might be posted yet.
12:35
If they're too far away for your tastes/your league format, try trading back.

how dependent is Laureano's 2023 outlook on his IRL team, and what are the actual chances it won't be Oakland?
Brad Johnson
12:35
I don't think it is at all. He's a bottom of the lineup guy for a good team whereas he should bat 3-5 for the A's. That makes up for the lower quality of supporting cast.
12:36
I'm surprised he's still an A. I can only assume it's because there are some vague rumors about his "character" and that PED suspension.
12:37
I've spoken to a couple front office contacts who seem borderline obsessed with avoiding any players who might mess with team chemistry.
Rule Changes
12:37
What stats get affected the most by the 2023 rule changes?  I’m thinking steals
Brad Johnson
12:37
Has to be SBs
RP ERA maybe?
12:38
Maybe a slight up to R and AVG
Pitcher injuries could be a BIG problem while usage and training patterns adjust

Can Michael Massey be a top15 2B?
Brad Johnson
12:39
That's a stretch. As worded, yes, he can.
But it's not a good bet.
12:40
One thing to watch is his quality of contact. It's really nice right now, but he seems to be playing above his head a bit imo.
I could be wrong.
12:41
There's sneaky 20/20 upside there too
Though nobody should be surprised if he plays 250 PA with bad stats. In other words, a very high volatility fantasy play.

Will Baltimore be speedy to bring him up like they did with Stowers and Henderson and Hall?
