Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson

And Witt did well too.
2:09
I don't think Gunnar is as impactful as Witt, but I'm not uncomfortable with that as a loose comp
2:10
Not as much speed, much better discipline, could have trouble getting to game power early on

Your bounce back fantasy player for 2023 is?
Brad Johnson
2:10
Is Acuna cheating? Or Tatis?
I think they'll give us 1st round production
Rick

Do you see Naylor being Cleveland's primary catcher next season or is that wishful thinking?
Brad Johnson
2:11
Wishful to start the season, but he's really done a lot to salvage his prospect pedigree. Industry folks were crossing him out as a future MLBer entering this year.
Handy Randy Elliott

Embarking on my first fantasy baseball season next year. 12 team league, 4 off/4 pitching categories.  Any advice for a rookie? I've tried to catch as many chats here and subscriber as possible
Brad Johnson
2:11
The best advice I can give is to put a lot of effort into it and learn from your mistakes.
2:12
Your successes will be mostly luck and thus offer weak lessons. That can happen with mistakes too (luck), but it's more likely you made a correctable error.
2:13
Once you don't make as many bonehead mistakes (we all do it), then you can start to make your own luck.

Who was the one fantasy prospect you were wrong about but could never admit you were wrong about?
Brad Johnson
2:14
Someone's name is on the tip of my tongue...
I mean, going way back to my pre-industry days, I was all-in on Phillies catching prospect Lou Marson. He was part of the original Cliff Lee trade. Never had the hitting chops for more than Double-A. Plus discipline made him look good.
2:15
Oh, Dylan Carlson is the name I was thinking of
I still believe he'll be very good
Time for me to start wrapping up
Commander Data

Is there a fantasy trade you made in the past that still haunts you today?
Brad Johnson
2:15
Oh yea!
2:16
My very worst trade was one month into Bradley Zimmer's career. He was quite hot at the time. 20-team dynasty, had a shot at 1st place if I could add a player with both power and speed. His multi-year slump began... immediately.
2:17
I traded Eugenio Suarez, Carter Kieboom, and Jesus Sanchez. Granted, Kieboom and Sanchez still haven't done much all these years later, but dealing them meant I couldn't take advantage of some very reasonably priced vets the following offseason.
2:18
And had I kept Suarez over Zimmer, I would have made another $250 or so that year (finish 3rd instead of 2nd).
Plus I was then obliged to keep Zimmer... twice...
Free the Tatis
2:18
I know it's not what you meant, but a funny little slip there in asking "Is Tatis cheating?"...yes, yes he is haha
Brad Johnson
2:18
I was not unaware :)

Do I ever figure it out and become fantasy relevant?
Brad Johnson
2:19
That's the guy I thought of for Commander Data's question, but he's never been "my guy." He's had more than enough hype without me joining the conversation.
He needs to get back to doing what he's best at:
2:20
And more seriously, I have no read on him. At all. I'm just going to avoid or pick VERY late.
Rick

A year or two some experts were talking about Winker being a top tier hitter especially for batting average. He's hitting .219. How much is due to hidden injury and poorer hitting environment or was he completely overrated?
Brad Johnson
2:21
I think you hit the nail on the head. GABP is a magical place. And he hasn't looked right all year. Could be a mental component too.

Is Oswaldo Cabrera a worthy hold in a deep, AL-only league?  The Yankees seem to like him, but he doesn't get the buzz of a Peraza or Volpe.
Brad Johnson
2:22
I don't really see him as a starter personally. Maybe a fringe second-division guy. Still a very nice backup and a good situation. He's been hot lately too so maybe he'll change my mind yet!
As I often say with these sorts of questions, it's a matter of your personal opportunity cost.
Andres Gimenez
2:23
Another owner in my league has it bad for Gimenez but if I were to trade him to him (we can trade after the season is over) I would have to go with O’Neil Cruz as my SS and then draft a backup. It’s a very deep league (20 teams). Do you believe & should I believe in Cruz enough to be my everyday SS going forward? Would you trade Gimenez? I need SP real bad and he is offering Ashby & Cristian Javier. Thoughts?
Brad Johnson
2:23
Well... first off, I don't like Ashby and Javier enough to trade Gimenez for them. I do like Cruz enough to feel comfortable exploring offers.
2:24
Give it time though. Draw out the talks. I get the sense your rival thinks he can snipe Gimenez from you before 2023 ADPs come out
2:25
Gimenez is on par with Bogaerts, Adames, Springer, Tommy Edman, Starling Marte, to name a few
in terms of 2022 production
