Is Ohtani the #1 pick in NFBC best ball leagues?
Brad Johnson
1:23
Yes!
1:24
Aaron Judge is the consensus second choice fwiw

1:24
how does Mike Trout look to you in pre-season games etc....
Brad Johnson
1:24
I've yet to see him play this spring.
1:25
I'm less concerned about his injury history than most of my colleagues
I'll change my tune if his calf acts up again. We've seen how that can go with Josh Donaldson.
1:26
But, the injuries he's suffered seem like random attrition. He should be entering a stage of his life where he's better at avoiding injury from unnecessary effort.
1:27
That's a tough one for professionals though because fans don't understand how much effort and injury risk are related.
They want to see Mike Trout hustling to beat out an infield grounder with a 9-run deficit. But it would be better if he jogged to first.
1:29
Anyway, I'm hopeful regarding Trout

Thanks for answering my question. Our league has been around since 1989, NL only at the time, back when the Stros were NL. I am elderly. This is a rebuilding year and those three players are good at that price for next year.

OK, try again! Hi Brad, 12 team AL only, 14/9 Rotis league $260 budget. I can only keep 6 and can retain any/all of them for two more years with $5 annual increments. DeGrom at $5 is an obvious choice and I'm pretty solid on MJ Melendez C $3. 4 more from: J Naylor 1B $2; Pasquantino 1B $10; Jung 3B $1; Gunnar 3B $10; Volpe SS $1; T McKenzie $8; L Castillo $13; Rodon $19; Singer $2. What do you think?
Brad Johnson
1:31
That's a pretty tough list. Could I perhaps unsell you on Melendez?
1:32
Actually, Melendez would be on my list after all
I think...
1:33
Let's take this from the opposite direction. Cut Jung and Singer.
So that's 5 spots for 7. Volpe is high risk/reward, let's put a pin in him for a second.
1:34
Naylor's like a $10 guy, Vinnie P is $20ish, same for Gunnar and McKenzie, Rodon's around $40, Castillo about $30.
And Melendez is around $15
1:35
if we assume Volpe is like a low AVG Witt, then he checks in around $30 once he arrives. But that delay is meaningful.
Considering you have so many sure things
1:36
Sounds like I'm keeping deGrom, Vinnie, Gunnar, Castillo, Rodon, and choice of Melendez/Volpe/McKenzie.
1:37
Hope that helps bring you some clarity even if it isn't a complete answer.

any update on Phillies pitcher Painter........
Brad Johnson
1:38
The latest update is they hope to have an update today
1:39
It's a shame (and so predictable). Was really hoping we had the next teenage phenom on the way.
I wrote about the Phillies Painter decision in today's fantasy post for y'all.
1:40
One detail I perhaps missed is Dombrowski - what does he care if he mismanages a prospect's service clock?
1:41
I don't know if Middleton has any inclination to butt in on these sorts of matters. Probably not after the playoff run last year.
1:42
Dombrowski's padding his HOF resume at this point. There's no cost to him if the Phillies lose 3/7ths of Painter's control years.

Couple AL only keeper questions. Standard 12 team 5x5. Drew Waters at $8? Semien at $36 or Altuve at $30? J. Hernandez worth $1 with W. Smith signing? Thanks in advance!
Brad Johnson
1:43
Waters is a no for me.
1:44
Semien's probably a hair overpriced. Altuve might be a hair under, but he has some peripherals pointing in the wrong direction. I'd throw them all back. As for Hernandez, I think you might as well open up that roster spot now. Worst case scenario, you pay $2 for him. Best case, you discover you had a better way to use that dart throw.
1:45
He should pretty safely go for $1 in auction ($2 if someone else noms him and you decide you want him)

Non-sexy question: is Ortega a sleeper for getting the heavy side of the platoon for the Yankees LF job?
Brad Johnson
1:45
It's definitely possible. There's a whole string of things that has to happen either injury or cut wise.
1:46
Aaron Hicks would need to get out of the way.
They'd need to decide they're OK with DFA'ing Estevan Florial. which almost seems inevitable.
1:47
If Volpe makes the club (unlikely but possible), then they have to sort what's up with Kiner-Falefa, the Oswald/os, and LeMahieu.
