Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson

Yes, we might even see him briefly demoted to get his swagger back - that depends on the org's read on his mentality. It's unusual to see quality prospects running a .203 BABIP. There could be a luck component to that, but in the minors, that usually signals poor quality of contact rather than bad luck.
Alek Manoah
1:28
What should we expect from him and is he a drop candidate?
Brad Johnson
1:30
I do think you can consider cutting him in 10-team. And should cut him in shallower formats. There's a decent chance he'll figure something out later in the year. That could happen next outing, mid-season, September, or never. Meanwhile, most of us can't afford to stash more than a couple dead-weight guys on the bench.
Baltimore

What should we do with Cano and Bautista?
Brad Johnson
1:32
As far as I'm aware, Bautista remains the closer. Cano is the kind of reliever you can roster even though he's not closing. Bautista flirts with disaster and could hit the type of rough patch that leads to role change.

Mervis a hold in a 12 teamer?
Brad Johnson
1:33
Not a must-hold, but I'd want to wait a little longer if there isn't a priority add waiting.

Need a hitter for injured Jazz for 4-6 weeks… Do you have a sense of which 1 or 2 of these you like? Gimenez, Suzuki, B. Lowe, B. De La Cruz, M. Mclain… h2h 5x5 leage
Brad Johnson
1:33
I really like Suzuki
1:34
If you need to optimize for certain stats rather than well-rounded production, Gimenez is the best play for SBs and Lowe is the best player for power outbursts.
John
1:34
What we think of Gimenez? Bounceback or he cooked?
Brad Johnson
1:35
It's looking pretty bad, just no quality of contact after a career-best season last year.
1:36
His 83.8 mph average EV is worst among qualified hitters by nearly a full MPH. (Esteury Ruiz is next-worst)
1:37
I wouldn't say he's cooked though - just temporarily lost. Like a lot of other struggling players, an adjustment could be imminent or never arrive. Not a bad buy-low target. Also totally plausible to sell-low. It's all dependent on your particular situation.

Andres Chaparro, Kyren Paris and Harry Ford? long term thoughts?
Brad Johnson
1:38
Chaparro has a lot of that special Yankees hype. Seems like he's more of a second division regular. Could really play up in Yankee Stadium though, and they could use a couple "free" league average players.
1:40
I've heard a lot of mixed reports on Paris over the years. Not a huge fan of prospects with high BB%, K%, and SwStr%. I think he has a major league future, but the fantasy outlook is murky. Seems likelier to be a backup than starter due to the aforementioned whiffs/Ks.

Will I make an impact in fantasy baseball this season?
Brad Johnson
1:41
Kind of leaning no or minimal. I haven't heard any updates on his injury in the last couple weeks. Once he's healthy, we can reassess. He's definitely one of the most interesting pitchers still in the upper minors.
Daniel
1:42
Tucker for Trea Turner a reasonable trade if I need runs and am leading RBI in a 5x5 roto?
Brad Johnson
1:42
It's reasonable, but I don't think I could bring myself to do it right now.
1:43
Tucker's batting 4-5 so he should still have decent run production.
1:44
You're also not really getting a "buy-low" price on Turner there. It's not as if he's hitting
Martin
1:44
What’s your opinion on using JD as the utility?
Brad Johnson
1:45
If he's the best available to you, it's fine. Still smashing the ball. Also showing signs of decline in contact rate.
I'd want to upgrade, but he's a solid stop gap.
Mike
1:45
Should I hold on to Jordan Walker in redraft leagues?
Brad Johnson
1:46
I wouldn't bother in 12-team and shallower. I recommend a second opinion though.
I'm low man on Walker's fantasy relevance (at least this year)
Drop
1:46
Taylor Ward and Gunnar Henderson dropped in my 6x6 (obp, tb, r, rbi, steals, ks) league.  Expecting a bounce back or let them sit?
Brad Johnson
1:47
I like Gunnar for an adjustment, especially in an OBP format. I'm not a big believer in Ward, but he has enough outburst potential to consider
Steven
1:47
Witt for Bogaerts? Would you do it?
Brad Johnson
1:48
That's tricky. In most cases, I want Witt's power and speed. There are specific scenarios where Bogaerts' run production and average are the better choice.
1:49
Not knowing your roster, I would lean hold.
Houzer
1:49
Gunnar Henderson ... I kinda thought he was gonna be a 25/15 .270 bat at 3B. Is that still what he is despite this blip?
Brad Johnson
1:49
Adjust down to a .255 AVG or so
1:50
Maybe .240-.255
He's gotta cut back on the walks and Ks a bit for the AVG to wake up. Being too passive.
1:51
His 2022 breakout was fueled by ditching his earlier passivity. He's back to taking way too many early count strikes.
