Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson

In shallower formats, I think the play is to roster him and use when you need to make up some ground in HR. Also, it's not entirely dumb to use him for the month of June to see if he can keep up his weird career-long love affair with the month.

Speaking of Carroll, Offered Carrol for J-Rod. Ya or na?
Brad Johnson
1:26
I prefer J-Rod, but it's reasonable enough.
Munoz or Sewald
1:26
Does Munoz get handed the closer role when he comes off the IL, or does Sewald stay put?
Brad Johnson
1:26
Certainly not handed, but I do expect it to devolve back into a dual-fireman situation
Underperformers
1:27
I have Luis Robert, Mike Trout and Jose Ramirez, paid big at the draft and so far, pretty pedestrian stats... Do they rebound and help me rebound in our league standings?  Starting to get worried.
Brad Johnson
1:28
The interesting thing about this is that all three are playing to something like their 40th percentile outcome, i.e. slightly worse than expected.
1:29
But if you're thinking they're the reason for a poor standing, it could be that you overestimated their contributions. In any case, I'd feel really good about at least one of them heating up in a big way.

raffy devers a good buy low?
Brad Johnson
1:29
Yes. I'm not sure you'll find anyone selling low though.

Is JV just shaking off rust or do the CSW numbers concern you?
Brad Johnson
1:30
I'm worried he's lost some Astros magic. It's also nice to pitch to Martin Maldonado on a regular basis.
1:31
I think he'll improve, but we shouldn't expect a sustained run like last season.
Flaherty or Liberatore
1:31
I have to jettison one.  Which are you keeping and which are you cutting?
Brad Johnson
1:32
Honestly, I'd look to replace both. Probably more out on Flaherty today. I think Liberatore is a RP and Flaherty is an irl innings muncher.
Liam Hendicks
1:32
Would the White Sox dare trade me if they fall out too far?
Brad Johnson
1:32
For sure. We also need to see him regain another couple ticks of velo.

Bobby or Bryce Miller ROS?
Brad Johnson
1:32
Ooh, lemme try to figure this one out...
1:33
I'd go with Bobby
1:34
The stuff is so good. He's always underperformed his stuff in the minors, but the Dodgers staff is pretty sharp. That might have been for developmental reasons. In the Majors, the gloves should be off for him to carve guys up whichever way works. I think Bryce is more OK than good.
Trea Turner
1:35
Am I ever going to heat up? Why am I in such a funk?
Brad Johnson
1:35
The why of it is pretty well publicized now - he's making career-worst swing decisions.
1:36
Hitters don't usually age into worse decisions, it's likelier he's pressing and just hasn't made the adjustment yet. It's a little concerning since it's so obvious.
1:37
Lately, he also has a painfully low BABIP despite good EVs. That, at least, should regress positively.
Jazz Chisholm
1:37
Any injury updates? Return eta?
Brad Johnson
1:37
I've gotten a bunch of questions about Jazz. I know what google knows.

Thoughts on Buxton’s value going forward? Hasn’t even played one game in the field and still seems to be a battle to stay healthy
Brad Johnson
1:38
I think we've found a good place for Buxton in fantasy drafts. He's the guy you turn to because you feel like your offense needs a dynamic hitter after the consensus guys are already gone.
1:39
Dude is fragile, no other way to put it.
Mike
1:39
do we believe in Spencer Steer?
Brad Johnson
1:40
More or less, as a hitter. I see him as a ~115 wRC+ type. Currently at 124 wRC+.
Totally a MLB-caliber starter. Trade bait in the Cincy system.

The O's are in a groove and maybe shouldn't tinker around with the sauce too much.....but is it tempting to ponder Jordan Westburg for Mateo as the prominent SS in the lineup?
Brad Johnson
1:40
Yes, it's tempting for sure.
1:41
They entered the season talking about Mateo having to earn his starts. He did early on and then just... lost it.
1:42
Westburg has some strikeout risk but otherwise looks ready
I don't think the swinging strike rate is going to magically improve with more time in AAA. It's just a part of his game.

EDLC or CES? Who arrives first? Thnx!
Brad Johnson
1:43
Going back to our earlier chat about Elly De La Cruz, I consider him to be FAR ahead of Christian Encarnacion-Strand.
