Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson

They might get him up to a mini-bulk role by the end of the season. They're obviously having some rotation issues. Even so, that's probably a stretch,
CJ Abrams
1:21
what are realistic 2024 expectations for him
Brad Johnson
1:22
I'm not really projecting growth. I think this is what he is. Will run a lot so long as the team remains bad.
Something like a .250/.300/.400 hitter. Might see a little power growth if he can make marginally better swing decisions.
1:23
I'm always a pessimist about no-discipline hitters who aren't shoving.

What's your long-term view on Vaughn Grissom?  Is he the starting 2b for another team next year?
Brad Johnson
1:25
I'm not sure who they'd trade him for - they seemingly don't have interest in another large contract. Maybe there's a prospect challenge trade out there. I think he just stays in their system. I view him as fantasy core performer type when he eventually plays.
He's not finding his power outcomes at all this year.

Roto league, would you rather have Lynn or sale ROS?
Brad Johnson
1:25
Lynn
Ben
1:25
In a keep 8, in first by 13 points. Would you move a $13 Gunnar for likely non-keepable Tatis + Albies? Increases my probability of winning even more, but I'm already in very good shape. Trying to determine how high Gunnar's ceiling is exactly.
Brad Johnson
1:27
That's a tough situation because it's a lovely offer.
The irl profile is better than the fantasy one. I think I'd do it and bank that championship.

Does Luken Baker have any real value in dynasty, or is his power from AAA just due to the league he was in? Very defensively limited, but numbers are intriguing.
Brad Johnson
1:28
Mostly, he doesn't have value because he's a 26-year-old who can't find playing time for a non-contending club.
1:29
He's kind of like Ryan Noda, just a curiosity until somebody opens the door for him. Then he's an active flier until he does something.
1:30
Just a reminder, this is a fantasy chat, so if you want to know how Michael Lorenzen fits in Philly, pretend you're asking me about fantasy.
1:31
fwiw, I view it as fine a regular season move to extend their poor rotation depth. Lorenzen goes to the bullpen as a hopefully never-used RP once the playoffs roll around.
Curious…
1:31
Are you valuing Merrill Kelly and Jesus Luzardo as weekly starters to ride no matter what or to avoid some matchups? On the fence between benching Kelly against the Dodgers (or Luzardo) this week to get Clay Holmes in for saves.
Brad Johnson
1:31
I use Kelly against everyone, though I haven't reevaluated him post injury (and should!)
I think I'd use Luzardo against everyone too... haven't been faced with that decision (0 shares)

Devers or Cruz in a dynasty league?
Brad Johnson
1:33
I prefer Devers to Oneil Cruz unless your competition window doesn't include the next couple seasons
Better organizational philosophy?
1:33
Do you think it’s better (for player development) to fast track prospects like SD does or slowly promote the way LAD handles it?
Brad Johnson
1:34
I think it's better to move players fast. LAD does it the way they do because their org is so deep.
They're managing the trade value of their guys and trying to figure out how to maximize them over modest use cases. SD wants guys they ride for 160 games a year.
1:35
They're playing different games.

I went all in on Cowser a couple weeks ago... any chance he puts it together these last 2 months?
Brad Johnson
1:35
Certainly. It's encouraging the Orioles have stuck with him rather than turning to some of the hot hands they have in the minors. Means they see a chance he'll turn the corner.
1:36
fwiw I was worried about this happening. He lapses into passivity at times which gets blown up in the Majors.

Why do you answer non fantasy questions?  Why don't you just skip them?  Just curious.  I do think your chats and emails are a wonderful value add for subscribers!
Brad Johnson
1:38
Soooo. The way Jotcast works is I basically see 5 questions at a time. On the sub chats, I answer everything, but I only get to about 10% in this public chats.
I try to answer whatever I can answer fastest. Or what I think is interesting/contains lessons for the larger group.
Then I scroll somewhere else in the queue and answer a few more.
1:39
In the case of the Lorenzen comment, I saw like 4 asks (probably the same person).

1:39
I have Rutch and Murphy and need to upgrade my pitching. Who should I go after or to I just keep playing both with 1 in utility.
Brad Johnson
1:40
I'd shoot for like Gausman or Wheeler. And older top performer.
1:41
You could open on Strider if you want to make sure you're not leaving money on the table. The key is finding the match - a team who is contending, struggling at C, and has SP to spare. Or, a non-contender who knows to divest of SP when given the chance but just hasn't done so yet.

Any guys in the single digit ownership range (roughly) that make you go, "man, this guy COULD go off at some point this year."  Realize a complicated question, but I'm thinking a guy like Stone Garrett.  Tons of raw talent, but maybe not quite the right situation or circumstance yet
