Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson: 8/15/22

Brad Johnson
12:21
Not Tatis, he's missing a month. Maybe if keep implications are in play, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
12:22
I'd do Acuna or Trea Turner. Locking in those SBs is just so freeing.
Adam
12:22
Should I sit Cole tonight?  He was great in Seattle, but underwhelming in his previous three outings.
Brad Johnson
12:23
There aren't too many scenarios where I'm sitting Cole personally. I'd have to think he's pitching through an injury. Which, I don't.
Jeff
12:23
Austin Hays just became available in my league, should I pick him up?
Brad Johnson
12:24
I'd need to know a lot more about your team and league to really answer that. I'll say this, Hays is just fine. He treads water in the non-SB categories, and that makes for a playable OFer. But it's also nothing special.

12:24
Chances we'll see MIke Trout this week?...I'm hanging on to the last playoff spot and could use him in the lineup!!!
Brad Johnson
12:25
I think that's pretty unlikely. He's only advanced to batting practice, and the Angels aren't playing for anything so there's no incentive to rush him back as a DH (plus, Ohtani)
Air
12:25
Is Vaughn Grissom for real?
Brad Johnson
12:26
Yes? I don't think he's going to stick or anything. At least not right now. I can't imagine the Braves have enough luck to have two guys basically skip the upper minors and supply above average production. Albies will push him out of the lineup in a couple weeks.
12:27
The skills are real, but part of his success is the result of a blank scouting report. As scouts fill in the details, he'll start to struggle more.
Dan
12:27
In a H2H league that uses saves and holds as separate categories, better to choose one and punt the other during a stretch run (so far I'm splitting the difference)?
Brad Johnson
12:27
Yes, I do think it tends to make more sense to choose one to dominate.
12:28
For H2H, I try to win as many categories as possible before a matchup. Obviously, it won't always play out that way. In this case, running 5 closers and a setup man would usually be better than 3-3. You'll be massively favored to win the category almost every week.
12:29
The benefit of prioritizing saves is that holds tend to be findable at all times by just using Roster Resource or a similar tool.
JC
12:29
Who will be better - Carroll or Lawlar?
Brad Johnson
12:29
irl, I suspect Lawlar might have a little more WAR to his name when the dust clears, but Carroll is such a huge fantasy profile.
12:30
Perennial top 5 pick in the making
Faster Kyle Tucker
Dave
12:30
V Grissom or Josh Jung for playoff push (assuming a Jung promotion)?
Brad Johnson
12:31
Do you think you could swing using Grissom this week then pivoting to Jung?
Set a news alert on Jung so you can pick him up immediately
In case he's called up before you pivot over
Steve Balboni's Sandwhich
12:32
What to make of Brady Singer?  Is this a true breakthrough or just a good stretch?
Brad Johnson
12:32
Both
His velocity is up recently, and it's no coincidence his results have improved at the same time
Sitting in the 94-95 range instead of 92-94.
12:33
He's still just a 2-pitch guy so he's going to run into unfavorable matchups and/or days when his command isn't as crisp.
Vinnie Barbarino
12:33
Are you a Nico Hoerner believer?
Brad Johnson
12:34
For fantasy purposes, meh. I think the average is basically real - I have him down as a .293 hitter. And he always had more pop than he'd shown prior to this year. I still think he could shoot for 20 home runs in a season without really giving away any points in average or K%
12:35
Though that might work out a little like when a Cesar Hernandez or Freddy Galvis surprises us with a random 20-homer campaign
The speed's really too
So yea, I like him a lot irl, and a I like him as a cheap accumulator in fantasy
SP help
12:36
Will any of these help me before the season is over? D.L. Hall, Jack Leiter, Kyle Harrison, Mike Soroka, Tyler Glasnow
Brad Johnson
12:37
Soroka is beginning a rehab stint, but he's basically their SP9 right now
They've got Ian Anderson, Kyle Muller, and Bryce Elder hanging around the minors most days.
Most clubs would kill to have those 3 in their rotation.
Hall will relieve for the O's in the coming weeks which will be a source of both glory and pain most likely
12:38
Should at least pile up strikeouts even if the ERA and WHIP are irksome
Glasnow might make a couple relief appearances in the final days of the season.
