2/3s of my collection is pencils over blue lines...

Felix. Would love it if you brought some of your guys to the Motor City Comic Con…schedule permitting. Detroit is one of the cradles of the con and comic collecting scene. Has a venerable tradition of con’s going way back.

BTW - to be clear, I have bought blue lines and blue line inks.  I agree, no problem when I know up front.  But some artists are drawing them after the fact.  And that does suck a lot.

@Will K - panel three is pure Zeck.

@Gene Park do we know for a fact Fish payed $2.5 million for the X-Men #1 cover

My Dad emailed me the Spidey page result.  I told him I watched it live while my jaw dropped.  HA!

FWIW, John Beatty said he didn’t ink that SW 8 page because he and Zeck were at Comic Con promoting the series at the time.

Hello! So late

I’m definitely shying away from vintage comic art lately unless priced well inside my comfort zone. Felix, I think it’s amusing to remember our conversation just a few years back about comic art on a small budget. For me it’s direct buys from artists or their reps and some strip art because I love it and it remains reasonably affordable.
Felix Lu

@Benno...what was true then is still true now...which is good for us!

3:53
If you get two motivated rich people that’s all it takes! And the 181 at 5 million sounds like a deal at this point haha
Roman Roy
3:53
$2.5 million for the X-men 1 covers would be well below the floated rumors for them, right?
Felix Lu
3:54
@BKV...Looking forward to return of SAGA in next couple of weeks!!!
@Everyone...get in your last questions for Barry and Gene! They will be exiting soon!!
Benno
3:54
That is true-if you love the form and don’t just have to chase your nostalgia there is an abundance of great stuff at decent prices.

I got a wonderful Snake Eyes Dead game DPS by Ryan Ottley thru Felix.  Ryan regularly uses blue line. But in this instance he did twice!  First was blueline of Rob Liefeld roughs that Ryan penciled over. Then Ryan scanned those and printed his blueline pencils, and then inked over them. Very cool to see Ryan's process, whatever their process.. those 2 pieces are definitely original art!

The question is whether this sale unlocks a lot of inventory that otherwise would’ve stayed put. We need a test of the markets appetite.
Felix Lu
3:55
@Jason...Barry has confirmed that floodgates have opened for consignments as a result of this sale...so now we all wait and see how they do next auction...
Philip B.
3:55
Just wait until Beeple his first Comic Book variant cover. 🙄
Timothy Guerrero
3:55
@Benno I'm seeing that as more artist are getting reps that there art is increasing in price and art will not sell for a long time. Even for popular artists.
Kelsey S
3:55
@Benno Unfortunately I’ve seen guys doing direct buys from artists then immediately flipping for a profit so it’s damaging that outlet as well, some don’t mind the markup but personally it’s infuriating
Gene Park
3:55
@Felix agreed, connoisseurship in the vintage OA market is definitely on the decline.

@Timothy Guerrero we don't know for sure about the X-Men 1 price but somewhere in the $2.5-$3M range. My best-placed source says closer to $2.5M so I'm going to go with that
Jason Wood
3:56
@felix a fascinating sociological experiment is afoot. We can’t underestimate the crypto factor either
Joe F
3:56
So with the exception of HA probably seeing a consignment bump, will others be pulling back? Waiting and seeing out of fear of leaving money on the table in private dealings, etc?
Felix Lu
3:56
@Joe F...No one wants to deal privately anymore...everyone wants to win auction lotto...
3:57
But remains to be seen how this plays out...if next auctions don't result in any outsized 7-figure sales, maybe pendulum swings back to private a bit (which has its own advantages for sellers...*cough*cash*cough*)
John Butler
3:57
Isnt that Twitter @Jason :)
Benno
3:57
I don’t care as much that the floodgates open for material I can’t afford anyway. I am definitely more focused on art by artists I know or have known personally unless the I perceive a real bargain

Hey all - forgot about this - East Coast Time Change Disorder
Roman Roy
3:58
@Gene...."connoisseurship" and "cognitive dissonance" in the same chat....you use your mouth real purty.
Nick Barrucci
3:58
I'm preferring trade these days privately, a lot more fun.
Jason Wood
3:58
Why would you sell privately unless it’s a volume sale? The call optionality of a bidding war right now is too real
Will K
3:58
g'night everybody !!
Chuck Arnold
3:58
Not dealing privately seems like just handing the auction houses a chunk of your equity
Felix Lu
3:59
@Chuck...yeah, but there's no private deal anywhere that would have resulted in a $3.36M sale for a SpiderGoo page. It took an auction. In fact, you would have certainly done worse than the net amount this consignor received, after fees. A LOT worse.
Joe F
3:59
@Felix Lu - I can see that *runs to check a few dealer pages...
Roman Roy
3:59
@Felix that doesn't stop people from cruising CAF, looking for old "account started" dates and seeing if they can't bilk gramps outta his 90's bought family jewels.
Felix Lu
3:59
@Roman...that's been the case since Day One.
Andy Cleangone
3:59
@Gene - love your comment about nobody is having any fun at these levels

I’m with Gene, we are going to have four — at least — Fed hikes this year and the world is going to deal with declining risk premiums for the first time in more than a decade
