@Stefano...I will always prefer traditional art, as well. So this new market isn't for me or you. But people want what they want, and we shall provide!

I literally just heard about NFT last week. A buddy of mine hit me up and was asking what I thought as I collect art. I did a lot of reading and I'm still not sure what to think!
Felix Lu

@Newell...very early days yet. No idea how this will play out, especially as world emerges from pandemic. Also, crytoart's fortunes will rise and fall with crytocurrency...they are inextricably linked.
Dan T

Make that 3 ppl who look at their art more often on CAF than in real life.
Ben H

@Jason M, ah to be young and ignorant again.  Well, I guess I'm still the latter.  Not so much the former.
Francis

All in all, just choose your key. And to @Artless, i understand. Its just a matter of framing, perspective.
Dan T
3:01
@Felix - good point about DKR, but if the artist only works digitally, not sure what other options there will be.  IRL commissions, I suppose.
Felix Lu
3:01
@Dan T...just stressing that I really don't care for monoprints. It's fine if others are into them, of course. Just not for me.
Francis
3:01
@Artless i will say though, sooner or later, and I am seeing this a lot. You are going to see art from an artist you will want. That artist will tell you its digital. That used to mean you are out of luck. Now it just means a new method, a new opportunity

One reason I could see for buying digital collectibles for me is the same reason I spend on patreon for my LCS, for instance, which would be to support an artist or charity.

Thank you for your input. Yes, I have contacted the auction house and asked the two "curators" to verify authenticity but have yet to hear back. Should have done that first of all before bidding but the work is so untypical it did not occur to me that anyone would forge this image. Thanks.

I’m clueless on NFT, but interested in knowing more. Probably not because I’d be really interested in anything digital, but more because I’m interested in where the world is heading
Dan T

@Felix - I don't own any.  Just navigating this wacky hobby.

I still feel awkward buying albums digitally...like I won't listen to it as much (and I probably don't). And yet, I just sent 100s of CDs to specialty recycling because I don't have the room. I think this debate will be a never-ending tug-of-ware between my comfort with collecting versus my comfort in lifestyle.

Hi, just caught up on the comments. Does NFT count on original art that doesn’t exist anymore? Let’s say a scanned high res art but the paper art was destroyed? Just a thought
Felix Lu
3:05
@Jimmy...a gray area! Yet to be determined how analog art, even if it no long exists, might fit into the cryptoart space. For now, cryptoart is entirely focused on tokenization of digital art...but I also don't believe anything is set in stone yet.

I make copies on bristol board of my OA to display, and from a distance it's indistinguishable from the original, I did tell someone that and they asked 'then why keep the original' lol. That said I don't know that the hardcore OA collector will be the same as the cryptoart collector, may be some cross over. But then will kick themselves when they see something they could have had for $125 going for $100k. Just like the OA market but faster...
Felix Lu
3:06
@Chuck..."Why keep the original"...the person who asked that isn't a collector. A collector understands. It's that same collector gene that understand the difference between an NFT and a random file.
Chuck

With cryptoart the value isn't the art, it's the token.

You see digital art with digital brushstroke and stuff.  It's like "impossible meat".  It's not meat but they want you to think it's meat.  I've passed by kosher restaurants that serve their version of Tex-Mex.  They put sour cream in quotes but because you can't use real sour cream.  You can make it look like a taco.  But if you've never actually tasted a taco, why bother ??
Felix Lu
3:07
@Will...I'm with you 100%. But there is an audience that doesn't care, and more to the point, finds Impossible Meat preferable to the real thing.
Benno R
3:07
Felix, what’s your over/under on doing a comic show in 2021. Do you have a yardstick for when you are willing to travel to a show with some of your guys?
Felix Lu
3:08
@Benno...25%. Vaccine rollout needs to be complete AND have seasonal efficacy. Which we don't know yet.
Dan T
3:08
I gotta admit.  You can make some pretty decent tacos with Impossible Meat.  Not better than real meat, but pretty good.
Felix Lu
3:08
@Dan T...I'm pretty blown away by Impossible, too. Beyond Burger is quite tasty, as well.
Artless (Mike) Artmore

@Francis @Dan,  My solution for acquiring art I wanted from a fantastic book that was all digital was to commission the artist (Sean Phillips) to draw my favorite page from the book (an idea I got from Felix's podcast).  This was a great experience for me!  Part of why collectors like OA is that it's one of a kind, but I feel that what matters most to me is enjoying OA in person, which still looks better than in reproduction despite gains in printing over the years.  I wonder if my enjoyment of this page will/would diminish if someone else commissioned the same page from the artist, but I don't think so.
Dan T

@Benno - What's the over/under on Dragon Con happening?  I'm going over, but kinda hope it gets bumped another year.

Will be interesting to see if this tech rolls out to establish provenance for physical pieces, like a COA that people actual rely on. If you sell the piece hanging on your wall, token could transfer to the buyer. That depends on having a centralized system tho...
Felix Lu
3:11
@Robert...the original art hobby is established enough to judge authenticity, etc. I don't believe we need a formal centralized system (and am against it, tbh).
Artless (Mike) Artmore

I love impossible meat, beyond burgers, more traditional tofu meat imitations, and I love real meat.  I can tell the difference between them all, I just like them for what they are.  This seems very different to me, though, than OA vs. digital.
Dan T
3:11
@Felix - I haven't tried Beyond yet, since I like Impossible.  It's good though.  I first tried Impossible Meat at White Castle of all places.
Felix Lu
3:12
@Dan T...I just tried plant-based prosciutto and carpaccio from Italy...not bad! Pea protein has been a game-changer for mock meats.

I know that the owners are planning on it. They told me so personally about 3 weeks ago when I saw them at the opening of the comic art show that’s at the Zuckerman museum at KSU. If I’m fully vaccinated and there is efficacy against variants I’m gonna go
Will_K
3:12
I doubt there will be a large convention unless the host city is allows 100% capacity for indoor dining..
Felix Lu
3:13
@Will K...sadly, I just can't see SDCC returning to what it was, vaccine or no vaccine. I think those days are over. I hope I'm wrong.
Neil

Super exciting and honestly pretty surprising to hear you’re getting into this space, Felix! I’ve been dabbling in crypto for a while and only recently digital art collecting has found its way into my radar. Very cool to see that you’re willing to embrace some cutting edge technologies and stay ahead of the curve!
Felix Lu
3:14
OK everyone, I gotta run! But thanks for stopping by, we'll do this again soon!

3:15
@Dan T I haven’t eaten meat since 2006, but the beyond tacos/burritos at Del Taco are damn good! Sorry for those of you not on the west coast lol
Artless (Mike) Artmore
3:15
@Robert  That's an interesting point re COAs, which haven't been so useful to me in my OA collecting efforts.  It may be that the only truly "safe" buying experience for collectibles will be provided by digital products.  So if you must have 100% provable authenticity for an item into the distant future regardless of pedigree, and that's all you care about, digital may be the way to go.
Dan T
3:15
@Benno - If I'm fully vaccinated, as you suggest, I'm likely to go, although, it'll be interesting to see what kind of guest turnout they have for panels.

@Will_K - Welcome to Atlanta where the players play.
