Felix Comic Art Chat 3/23/2018

Once the thumbnail/prep is done, about a day total (12 hours?) to pencil and ink a page. Covers are tougher to quantify. Sketching a cover idea takes a day or longer, depending on inspiration, pencils and inks another day, 3rd day for colors.
9:22
I do my cover sketches in color, too, to get a better idea of what the final will be. They're full color illustrations, so often a black and white sketch doesn't really capture the idea.
Jason Wood
9:22
Well, if you feel like drawing a Moby Dick commission to switch things up, I know someone who would take it off your hands ;)
Cliff
9:23
Nice, that would change it up!
Felix Lu
9:23
Sorry Jason, Cliff's commission list is gonna be closed for a while. He's still got a bunch to get caught up on. Update, Cliff?
Cliff
9:26
To any of you waiting, I'm sorry I haven't gotten them done yet! I take them pretty seriously, especially when you see Harren and the other guys crushing it, so I want to make sure I'm doing my best on them. Hoping to get some more done in the next few months, and definitely during the next Paper Girls hiatus.

Felix, quick question. Wondering why you don’t post prices for your artists when they’re offering commissions?
Felix Lu
9:27
It's just how I've always done it. And it's worked so far. So habit? Superstition? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Tobin Pope

For cliff and felix,  what are your favorite podcasts to listen to?
Felix Lu
9:29
I don't listen to many, because it's hard for me to listen and work at the same time. If I still had a commute, I'd listen all the time, though. These days, it's mostly 11 O'Clock Comics Podcast. Those guys are a riot. I mostly love how relentlessly positive they are about comics. I'm a realist, but excessive negativity is tiresome. These guys keep it all fun.
Cliff
9:29
Hmm, listen to a few - Sketchd, Felix's (oddly perhaps my favorite!), some NPR stuff like Serial & S-Town, You Must Remember This...
Felix Lu
9:30
Although James Harren did recommend one to me recently: THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. All about PornHub and how free pornography has changed us. It sounds more exciting then it actually is, though, tbh.
Nathan Zee
9:30
Tell Jason Wood he needs to get his cohorts excited about Paper Girls.
Felix Lu
9:30
And speaking of 11 O'Clock Comics Podcast...
Liefeld Fan
9:30
Felix, when are you going to do more 90s episodes? I want more Liefeld and Lee and McFarlane discussion.
Cliff
9:32
A friend of mine bought a Divine Right page!
Felix Lu
9:32
I actually plan to speak to an early insider from Image (who actually was with them from Malibu). He has the scoop on all the guys...many of whom were also crazy OA collectors. He's a little further down the list, but I'll get to him!
Luke French
9:33
Who are you artistic heroes and major influences (in comics and in general?)
Cliff
9:35
I'm inspired by many, but Toth, Mazzuchelli, Jaime Hernandez, are definite favorites. But also Zaffino, Bernet, Battaglia, -- John Byrne, even. Can't escape the influence of the comics I read as a kid.
9:37
Micheluzzi, Frank Robbins, Paul Smith, Mike Allred, Walt SImonson... the list goes on and on. Out of comics, Steven Millhauser, Borges and Wong Kar Wai.
Mike C.
9:37
Are you working on any new projects after Paper girls?
Cliff
9:38
I would hope so! That's a ways off though. Trying to figure out a creator-owned thing, or possibly a return to DC. What would you want to see?
Chris Ta
9:38
Cliff, have you picked up any new pieces of OA since your last Felix chat?
Cliff
9:39
Been tempted a few times by OA, looked at some Steve Rude and Toth but can't pull the trigger.
James
9:39
Hi gang! @Felix: was just taking a look at the previous chat and saw the topic of storage came up. Can you cite what you use? I'm currently just using an Itoya Profolio - but want something a bit more sturdy, with better protection.
Felix Lu
9:40
Art in mylar, then in Itoya. Itoyas kept in safe.
But Itoyas on their own are really good enough, IMO.
Luke French
9:41
How about that Brian K. Vaughan dude. What's his deal, right?!!! With all the crazy stuff he makes you draw.
Matt Dicke
9:41
Hi Cliff and Felix- thanks for the chat- I have a tool question for Felix what is your favorite white out?
Cliff
9:41
Yeah, that BKV. Spends too much time alone, I think.
Felix Lu
9:41
I usually use old-school liquid paper on the pieces I send you, Matt.
Oh wait, this is probably for Cliff...
Cliff
9:42
My preferred white out is Pentel Presto. I've tried acrylic white, but usually I can't work over it again and the ink bleeds or smears.
Nicky Poo Pitarra
9:42
Cliff! Thanks for the wedding gift. Best Target coffee table ever!
Cliff
9:42
You're welcome, dude! Congratulations!
Luke French
9:42
Do you curse him sometimes (not for the giant robots part obviously? More so for the giant Tardigrads maybe?)
Cliff
9:44
Haha, I suggested the tardigrades, actually. He comes up with fun stuff, but he always adds "or whatever cool thing you want to draw." I try to work with his description as much as I can, fulfill the spirit of the script, before going off on my own tangent.
Ryan Cheshire
9:44
Do you guys have a timeline laid out for each of the Papergirls as they move through time? I imagine BKV has one of those serial killer rooms with red yarn connecting everything.
Cliff
9:44
I'm pretty sure he has it all mapped out in his head. It's also why he's bald.
Mike C.
9:44
Cliff, whose idea was it to do the bright and vivid coloring on Paper Girls? It really makes the book stand apart from other books.
