Matt Wilson is a genius! We talked a lot before starting PG, and I wanted it to look different from Wonder Woman, not like something you'd see from DC. Was inspired by 80's & European coloring a la Moebius - mostly flatter, lighter approach with less saturation. Want the line art to come through more, and play with color temperature for depth instead of saturation/contrast.

What is a piece of artistic advice you received while developing your craft that you still use today?
Cliff
9:49
There are a lot of little tips I keep in mind. First is Toth - strip it down to essentials and then draw the hell out of what's left.
9:50
Another tip: Michael Lark and I were talking, and he had a good take - when you're drawing, aspire to imply rather than delineate. It's easy to make rules for yourself about what to draw, and then you've spent 3 hours drawing a bunch of brick patterns that look like mush.

Your favorite artists whose worked from 2000-present?
Felix Lu
9:51
All the Felix Comic Art guys.
Correction: All the Felix Comic Art guys who turn their commissions in on time.
Cliff
9:52
Of course! It's a hell of a stable. Present company excepted (and your new work looks incredible, Nick!)?
9:57
Goran Parlov, Coipel, Emily Carroll, Kerascoet, all must buys.
Gene Park
9:57
Cliff - what are your favorite (comic) reads these days?  And, random question since I just re-watched it the other day - did Total Recall (Arnie version of course) actually happen or was it all just a Rekall-induced dream??  Felix can answer the latter as well.  :-)
Cliff
9:58
Gene, you have my grail! :)
Felix Lu
9:58
Gene, check out ANNIHILATION. Now on Netflix UK.

Related to the previous question, Punisher: The Platoon was pretty great. Southern Bastards is one of my fave all-time comics, along with Scalped. Anything by Jillian Tamaki.
Felix Lu
10:00
PUNISHER: THE PLATOON was fantastic, I'll second that. Also a fan of SB, as well.
Cliff
10:00
Total Recall? I think it happened, but there's enough coincidence to make you doubt it, but what's the point of the story if it didn't happen, right?

10:00
Hey Felix, hey Cliff! I was actually going to ask about Cliff’s commission list. Haha!
Felix Lu
10:00
Now you know!
Simon Miller
10:01
What is your position on using digital tools to produce art at any point in the process?
James
10:01
@Cliff: going back to your work process, do you not find working digitally that you can/could speed up the process? For example, reusing elements... Or is that sacrilegious of me to even suggest!?
Felix Lu
10:01
Cliff can answer both of these at once...
Cliff
10:01
I'm almost purely digital except for inks.
10:03
For me, penciling is so much about planning, layout, draftsmanship that it's MUCH easier to do digitally. Easy to fix (if a head is too big, shrink instead of redraw), do perspective, drop in reference. It's made my art better, but I do try to keep everything looking as organic as possible, hence the inking on boards.

10:03
Hi Cliff. I am a fan of your work, thanks for all the great art!
If money was no option, what original art commission would you get?
Felix Lu
10:04
For me...Struzan. Otomo, too. And Watterson. There are a bunch!
Cliff
10:04
Damn, that's a good question.
10:05
I'd go for a giant James Jean painting.
Felix Lu
10:06
Funny...I just arranged a giant James Jean commission. 60X66. Big enough?
Cliff
10:06
Probably too big for my living room. Send it back!
Alex Sheikman
10:07
@Felix. Enjoyed your last podcast, especially the story about a piece of artwork that you bought for x and was offered 10x for, and the struggle of deciding what to do...although it seemed you reached the decision to hold on to it pretty quickly. Do you feel that way about all your pieces? How many pages of art do you have in your collection?
Felix Lu
10:08
Do I feel that way about all my pieces? I don't know...try me:P
10:09
I used to put everything up on CAF. But in recent years, have just not had enough time. I do try to put up representative pieces. But some of may seem redundant...does anyone care to see 100 GOON pages? (Exaggeration, I don't have THAT many GOON pages...but I do have a lot.)

10:09
@JasonWood The Moby Dick commissions are a great idea. It’s a timeless theme (“chasing the whale”) drawn by the best contemporary artists. Those illustrations/commissions are going to have a lasting appreciation.
Adi
10:09
Hey Cliff, any dream projects you can share with us?  Also, do you see yourself getting involved in some of the other parts of the comic process?  Writing?
James Miller
10:09
Cliff, are there any books/characters out now that you wish you could work on?
Felix Lu
10:09
Two for Cliff that he can answer together...
Cliff
10:11
Yes, I definitely want to write for myself at some point. I feel like you get a very unique and special comic when you do that auteur thing. But it all depends on whether I have the right story to tell.
Alexander P
10:12
What do you guys think works about the comics industry today
What do you think is broken about the comics industry and needs to be fixed?
Felix Lu
10:14
The world is changing, for sure. I do believe comics are a vital art form. The level of talent, on average, across the board, is higher than it's ever been. How people access comics, though, appears to be undergoing a radical shift. We live in interesting times.
