Felix Comic Art Chat 3/30/2018

Published art is tough to fake EXACTLY. A forger came come up with a reasonable facsimile, but it won't match up 100%.
10:09
Unpublished art is where it gets tricky, and where most forgers ply their trade these days.
10:10
At this point, I'd most especially stay away from unpublished Schulz, Watterson, Larsen, Dr. Seuss, Frazetta, and on and on.

10:10
Emailed you about some art I’d like to see at C2E2. Thank you again for the podcast and running a business that feels fair to artist and collector alike. Cheers.
Felix Lu
10:11
Thanks David, see you at the show!
10:12
Had an opening to mention this early and muffed it...but for next chat, I should have on Daniel Warren Johnson. So if anyone has any questions for Daniel, save them up for next week! We will have it early than usual due to C2E2. Will send out notice ahead of time.
10:13
And if there any other artists or collectors you'd like to talk to, let me know!
Rick Yankosky
10:13
@Felix:  Agreed on Pope & Batman: Year 100.  Does he ever mention returning to THB?  When I used to run into him @ MoCCA, he would say there was more to come.
Felix Lu
10:14
Don't know about THB, specifically. But I do know those personal creations are very important to him. I get asked about that art a lot, and he's been adamant about not selling.

Hi, greetings from Portugal
Did you ever bought an artwork following the advice of someone you thought had more knowledge than you and/or have a good opinion of his/her advices and after you were sorry about buying it?
Felix Lu
10:14
Hi Joao! Good to hear from you!
10:16
If anyone else fees like answering this, feel free. For me...no. Mostly because I've never relied on anyone else for any specific buying advice. I go with my gut. It's fine to ask others for their opinions, but in the end, you gotta trust your gut.
10:18
How about this: Have you ever had any doubts about a piece, but then following the advice of other more seasoned collectors, bought a piece...and it worked out happily?
I mean, if it's only ever worked out poorly...stop asking those collectors! Or ask other collectors.
Rick Yankosky
10:19
Fake unpublished Mignola stuff will pop up on eBay from time to time, as well.  Speaking of which, ever made any contact with him about being his art rep, Felix.  His family sells stuff from time-to-time (most recently on eBay), but I think you'd be helpful to them.
Felix Lu
10:20
Thanks Rick, that would be an incredible honor. But there are guys who pretty clearly have no interest in working with a rep. For whatever reason. You just have to respect that and let them do their own thing.
Pete Marino
10:21
@Justin Stafford email inkers!  I have had some amazing sleuthing exercises finding artists that are out of the business now, or inkers that are hiding stashes of stuff in their garage and no one thinks of reaching out to them.
Felix Lu
10:21
I've tried this before...with zero luck. Let us know your success stories!
Pete Marino
10:22
@Joao Antunes i think if you're in this hobby, you need to make sure you're wearing your big boy pants and own that you're the one in charge of where you spend your resources.  I've gotten good and bad advice in the time i've been collecting, but at the end of the day, it was my choice to pull the trigger or not.
Felix Lu
10:25
Yup. Not speaking of Joao, but for all the very successful people who participate in this hobby, you'd be surprised at how many have very little confidence in their own judgment or tastes when it comes to OA. They need the validation of their peers. So my advice is to really understand your own taste and what motivates you to collect.
Rick Yankosky
10:26
@Felix:  Thanks for the info on Paul.  I'd be down for a James Harren interview/conversation @ some point.  Influences, stuff he dug/digs, what's he working on, etc.
Felix Lu
10:27
I definitely hope to get James on at some point. The limiting factor would be the format here. Anyone who does this, has to be able to type fast, at least!

10:27
I only buy what I like and can afford.
Felix Lu
10:27
The most tried and true advice for this hobby. Ever.
Rick Yankosky
10:28
@Justin: Pete's tip about contacting inkers is an interesting one.  If I'm not mistaken, I purchased my very first piece of published art from an inker.
Felix Lu
10:29
I really only tried for one series: NEXUS. Steve Rude used several inkers during the run. And they were all GOOD (he personally hand-picked each one). So there SHOULD have been plenty of opportunities. But struck out with every one of them. Congrats to Pete for having better luck!
Pete Marino
10:29
@Felix Lu almost all my Invisibles collection has come from artists directly, it helps that it's not a popular series / run.  But I've found 1 artist who quit comics and became an acupuncturist in the UK.  Found him through his professional web site.  He had 20 pages in a box.  Bought all 20.  Jill Thompson's Inker left the business and changed her name, that was an insane search that took months to track her down.  That was an insane search, but wound up getting 12 pages from her so far, and may still get more.  Those are the top 2 that i remember, but I've had a lot of luck.  But I'd also say it doesn't work if you're hoping no one has ever asked Scott Williams or Danny Miki, but if you're looking for the less common stuff?  It's worked out pretty well for me.
Felix Lu
10:31
Damn...GREAT stories. Inspirational, even! Best of luck to everyone else in their inker hunts (as long as you're not looking for NEXUS!).
Joao Antunes
10:31
@Pete and Felix I always trust in my opinion but the question is because I remember Felix mention in one of the podcasts that was good to have friends, but I always wonder if sometimes it may be misleading of our own tastes and follow up on what someone else loves or think it should be apraised
Felix Lu
10:33
Well, sure, it's great to have friends to share this hobby with! For many reasons. But won't be the same for everyone. I know some guys who lean on each other for buying advice all the time. It works for them. But it doesn't seem to be working for you. So ask other/new friends and see if your judgment/taste/eye align better.
10:34
Have you ever been talked OUT of a piece, and then be glad you didn't buy it?
I guess what I'm trying to get at, is not be focused on a specific bad experience, but to consider all experiences, good and bad, and weigh them on balance.
Rick Yankosky
10:35
@Pete: That's awesome!  Nice work.
Joao Antunes
10:35
@ everyone that feels to answer, there are some fantastic stories and art from foreign artists and writers that don't work for USA publishers. Do you think that they are not accepted or known in the USA because it just doesn't reach to the country or is it because of a question of just interest in those kind of comics?
Felix Lu
10:35
Both.
10:37
Obviously, if no one here knows about them, there will never be an audience. It's a question of accessibility/availability. These works have to be readily/easily available to gain any sort of traction.
10:38
But beyond that, there is a cultural barrier. For me, it's slight. For others, anything even remotely foreign or unfamiliar is a challenge.
10:41
It's like film...the local audience knows the vocabulary. Outsiders have to learn it. When a musical/dance number breaks out in the middle of a Bollywood melodrama, it's just part of the show for the local audience. For Westerners, it can be jarring at first. Some will get used to it, others won't.
10:42
Manga is now quite popular here, but there are those who will never get it.
Connecting…

Does anyone here collect double page spreads, and if so, how do you store/ display them. I’ve stayed away from buying any mostly due to logistics of properly displaying in a portfolio.

@Felix Lu sorry for the patchwork post and typos.  Trying to edit in the chat window and multi-task obviously didn't work out well for me =)
