@everyone who do you think is the greatest comic book artist working today and who is the greatest ever?
Felix Lu

Wow...well, all-time is easy. Kirby.
1:02
Today? Tougher. IMO, the biggest name to emerge in the last 10-20 years would be James Jean. But he's not strictly a comics artist per se. Taking him out...what's the criteria? Technical skill? Storytelling? Someone who's a complete creator?
1:04
I tend to give extra credit to those who can both write and draw. So these won't be the biggest names, because they're not Big Two guys, but I think, overall, they may be the most talented. So someone like Paul Pope or Eric Powell. Also, outside superhero comics, Daniel Clowes and Chris Ware.
1:05
Maybe you were expecting someone like Jim Lee, sorry!

@joao  I had an experience at NYCC where I thought I had a pre-show commission, but the communication was really lacking, got to the show to check on it only to find out it wouldn't be started until I paid, but that was not clearly communicated.  Needless to say it all worked out, but was way more stressful than it should have been.  Also, commissions can be hard to get, and depending on budget you may only do a couple, so if you miss on one, you might miss on another while trying to get the one you thought you had.

Felix you have an absolutely stunning collection of art and commissions, is there still a grail out there for you? I realize that Grail is a loaded term I think Grail is more of a tier than a single pieces. I am just curious about if you still have an Everest or have you already conquered it?
Felix Lu
1:08
I really don't, because I accept that some pieces are just not attainable. Also, getting a very personal commission that was very important to me, changed my outlook on all of this a lot. Everything else pales in comparison, even if it's meaningless to everyone else.

Kirby is the most influential of all time for sure, but I think Eisner might beat him out for the greatest, maybe it's 50/50...tough call...
Felix Lu

Yes, we have to establish criteria, because an argument could definitely be made for Eisner. But consider all factors, it's gotta be Kirby.

Paul Pope is one of the current greats.  His style isn't for everyone but I can already see his influence in newer guys work.

No question, artists will appreciate different guys than fanboys will. Not to say Pope doesn't have his fair share of fanboys...but when I brought Pope on board, the other guys were THRILLED. Young guys worship him. Hugely influential.
It's quite interesting to talk to artists about whose work they admire. It's rarely the popular house-style guy.

@Oscar Greatest storytellers working today... Samnee, Capullo, Garbriel Ba and Fabio Moon, Scott McCloud and Marcos Martin. Soon Geoff Shaw, DWJ, will be on that list too, if they are not already there. Extremity is only the beginning I think he has nothing but greatness ahead. All time... Kirby, Miller, and Jim Lee there influence on comics and comic art is incalculable.

It's funny we don't say John Byrne any more, I used to really love everything he did, but now I don't look back on it with as much affection. Just some nostalgia
Best working today Frank Quitely, Geof Darrow, Jerome Opena
and Paul Pope

OK everyone, gonna wrap this up...it's been fun, as usual! Gonna bring on other collectors that you've heard on the podcast to co-host some of these down the line. Also, continue having artists on from time to time. So thanks again for chatting, see you at the next one!

Hi Felix - Looks like everyone had a great time at C2E2... since we're talking about new blood in the hobby... when you're at cons are you seeing the same people or new people picking up sketches/commissions/etc?

Thanks as always Felix. These are so beneficial for not making the hobby so insular. Have a great weekend.
