I've got a question to anyone who wants to answer, Felix pointed out several times that nostalgia is very important in this hobby we love, but also pointed out that we live in very distinct times and the comics that are created nowadays have a very distinctive audience, at the very least a much more mature audience, so the question is: related to the worries of the hobby is sustained in a big way by nostalgia, is it really a question and how far goes our nostalgia now? I know that for me I read now much more comics than when I was young and I consider my nostalgia to be the books I read now with a much more selected criteria and those are the important ones for me (but of course I also bought some artworks from artists and books I loved from my childhood, but very few compared with the artworks I buy from the books I read now, even if they have several years or decades or are just released).

Anyone is free to chime in, I'll post your replies.

Anyhow, nostalgia is THE driver in the values for vintage art. It's a primary motivation for many collectors. However, it's no longer MY primary motivation. This hobby and market continues to sort itself out; I believe nostalgia will become less important over time. But it's not generally something I spend a lot of time thinking about...I just collect what I like and can afford. My goal is to have fun in this hobby.

Jared-I bought the Deadly Class cover that was labeled for issue 31 at the end of last year.  Issue 31 came out and it the main cover nor the variant was what I'd bought.  Was THRILLED at the LCS yesterday when it was used as the main cover for issue 33!
Felix Lu
12:35
Congrats man!
Jared
12:35
@Reba, yeah, I was definitely excited when I found out, not because I want to sell it, but because I don't have any other cover art so far
Felix Lu
12:36
When you eventually get another cover, compare the feeling between that, and this (having your personal commission turned into a cover). I woudn't be surprised if this feels a little more special.

Remender has a good art eye.  We'll see if this give everyone new ideas to get commissions related to those books!
Felix Lu
12:37
Haha!! Hadn't thought of that. People could be basically commissioning their own covers, if they pick Remender books as subjects.

What are the pros and cons for caf? I've been thinking to join it
Felix Lu
12:38
Can't think of too many cons (or any at all, right now). At very least, pros greatly outweigh any potential cons. Join and participate!

My ears were burning (somebody talking about me?) so i figured I better log on this time, LOL.
Felix Lu
12:39
Haha! Sell me back that first appearance of Cosmic Ghost Rider!!!

Tobin-I haven't renewed my CAF premium in a few years.  I need to--I feel like I get a lot of use out of that site (daily use!) and the cost isn't outrageous.  It definitely helps in keeping up with friend's galleries better!
Felix Lu
12:40
I'm pretty sure I get more bang for my buck, from the sheer amount of time I spend on CAF, than anything else I subscribe to. And it benefits the site. A no-brainer for me!
Bob
12:40
You seem to do a pretty good job of actually listening to and responding to customers of your site. How come many original art representatives and dealers can get by on ignoring customers when people are spending hundreds if not thousands on art?
Felix Lu
12:40
Thanks Bob!
12:41
The reason they get away with that is because collectors let them!
12:42
To a certain degree, we're junkies. Other dealers/reps will take advantage of that. Why should they work harder when they don't have to, when every sin is forgiven?
12:43
So...want change? Vote with your wallet! Don't be a hopeless junkie! Be a discriminating one! LOL!

12:43
Great news! It was cool to see all the Pope Sketches with the finished pieces.

12:43
Will James be one of those other artists? Really loving his warm ups!
Felix Lu
12:43
Very possibly;) Hang on for announcement!

@Joao I am building my art collection on a budget so my nostalgia pulls me one way... towards the artist of my youth like Jim Aparo, Frank Miller, but my wallet pulls me the other way towards modern artists whose art I enjoy currently. That said the art of today still scratches that itch of nostalgia, it has just made me look in other places than just the nostalgia of my youth
Felix Lu
12:45
Yup, this happened to me, too. What we read as kids is a finite set of books. Meanwhile, there are infinite new books coming out. So much more explore and discover!
Reba J
12:45
@Joao, the nostalgia question is endlessly interesting to me because it can take so many forms. I buy art made now (mostly 'cos I'd rather give money to artists than collectors) but there's no doubt that the stuff I like now is still shaped by stuff I read much younger. A lot of our core preferences are locked in pretty early I think.

Hey @Tobin, a tip to help get more CAF hits -- there is an option during posting that adds a thread / link to the Premium Updates column that appears on the left side of the CAF page.  For me, this also helps alleviate the frustration of  a posting getting lost in the clutter of when somebody vomits 500 pieces to the site all at once, at the same time you post your piece.
Reba J
12:47
@Jimmy Lawrence, hey hello from the person who owns the other cover for Deadly Class 33. This is a small hobby, yeah?
Felix Lu
12:47
That's awesome.

@ Felix (or anyone else that has a story that is willing to share). Did you had any experience of a transaction you were doing that seemed to have a very bad or dramatic ending and turned out to be a fantastic one at the very end?
Felix Lu
12:51
Yes. I did a trade with an artist for a commission. I gave him my art, and he was supposed to do the commission within a couple of months and deliver at a show we would both be attending. The communication was fine, so even when the show deadline was missed, I was OK.
12:52
But then time just dragged on...and no commission. Months turned into years.
It got to the point where it became uncomfortable to even say hello, because we both knew this was hanging over us.
12:53
I pretty much just wrote it off. I was warned by other collectors early on that it could take a LONG time. So I felt partially responsible for believe it would take two months in the first place.
12:54
Flash forward 10 years...and the guy delivers. And it's a freaking masterpiece. Maybe 10X what we originally agreed on. Totally ridiculous.
12:55
Now, having said that...if you asked me if I would do the deal again, knowing for sure it would take 10 years? Yes, I would do it again! Totally worth the wait!
12:56
But...if you asked me if I would do it again the same way, i.e. NOT knowing when or if I would be getting anything at all...then I would probably pass. The uncertainty was a killer and no fun.
12:57
So in the end, it worked out for me GREAT. But I can't say for sure I'd sign up for the experience again.

Hi Felix - Looks like everyone had a great time at C2E2... since we're talking about new blood in the hobby... when you're at cons are you seeing the same people or new people picking up sketches/commissions/etc?

Thanks as always Felix. These are so beneficial for not making the hobby so insular. Have a great weekend.
