Hey everyone! Welcome to our latest chat!
10:16
I'll be here for a bit, so feel free to shoot over any questions/comments about original art hobby, market, etc.!
Remember to "@name" if directing question/comment at anyone besides me.

Hey Felix! How is your week/artshipmania  going?
Felix Lu
10:21
Craaaazy. But just about all caught up. Four straight drops of sell-outs (or near sell-outs). Not complaining, though!
John E
10:22
Hey Felix! So something I’ve always been curious about your art drops. Why do some pieces of art get marked “sold” quickly, while others are marked “on hold?”
Felix Lu
10:22
Everything is "on hold" until payment is completed. I'd say 90% of payment happens once I send out instructions. So those get changed to "sold" status.
10:23
"On hold" generally means time payments. For all intents and purposes, that art is sold, too.
Bob
10:23
Felix! You said that the Thanos #17 sold sight unseen and intact. How far ahead of publication do you decide if you're offering a book intact or if you're breaking it up for sale? Thanks! Bob (a happy Thanos #18 pageholder)
Felix Lu
10:26
It depends. Sometimes the artist only wants to sell the issue complete. In other instances, I get interest far ahead of time from collectors. In the case of THANOS #17, the collector wrote me months ago. He gambled that it would be a battle issue...he was right! He was willing to pay a record price for it, too, so I'd have to say the right guy got that issue.

Hi Felix any chance there will be offered a chance to get a hold of the French Version of Little Bird for Impatient Ian Bertram fans.
Felix Lu
10:26
You mean the actual book? Or the art?
10:27
The book should be available via importers like Stuart Ng. But if I can wrangle up some copies, I will. And I'll give everyone a shot at them.
I've seen the art and it's incredible.
Matt Todd
10:28
Speaking of artists who just had a massive sell out. Will the Geoff Shaw pages from the Thanos Annual be made available?
Felix Lu
10:29
Yes. Unless something crazy happens, I should be announcing those pages for the site soon.
Josh Hall
10:29
Hi Felix, I really appreciated your interaction via chat before that most recent Akira drop and explaining how ordering from the site works. I didn’t order any of the Akira art mainly because I wanted actual fans to get it although there were some gorgeous pieces! I’ve never read or seen the film but have always been a bit curious. I’m happy to say that I was inspired to order the first volume which just arrived and I’ve started reading. Thank you for that. I hope to one day order from you!
Felix Lu
10:30
Wow...very cool that you're getting to read it for the first time. Read the manga before you see the movie!
Chaz West
10:33
do you have an FAQ for new comic art collectors like what to look in a page and what makes pages worth more than others? i love the art but i'm at a loss on how i should start my collection
Felix Lu
10:34
Hi Chaz...No, I don't. Mostly because there are no easy "one-size-fits-all" answers. There are countless variables to this hobby. But if you have a general question, I'll be happy to try to answer for you here.
Josh Hall
10:34
I will, I promise! Have to ask, is the Kodansha comics release the best for me to consume the story that is available to me?
Felix Lu
10:35
If you're talking about the 35th Anniversary box set that was released last year, then yes.
Matt Todd
10:35
Do you have any recommendations for a good safe to store OA in?
Felix Lu
10:36
A gun safe with sufficient dimensions is the way to go. You can even find one at Costco!
I got a top-of-the-line make/model...but for most collectors, I think a basic gun safe should suffice.
Josh Hall
10:37
@Chaz West, for me and why I didn’t buy any Akira pages (at least yet) I go off of what speaks to me as a fan. For instance, I’m a huge Quentin Tarantino AND had always wanted to buy one of Rob Guillory’s Chew covers. I bought the last Tarantino homage he did, for issue 55 and it was jus kismet! Rob’s style just eall
10:38
@Chaz West continued...Rob’s style just really speaks to me. :)
Felix Lu
10:39
There you go. The most common advice is: Buy what you love and can afford. Your reasons for loving something don't have to be the same as anyone else's.
Johnny
10:39
Felix, can you come up with a drug that will stop these cravings I have for more OA? You'd make a fortune.
Felix Lu
10:39
Haha! I wish...I'd save myself a fortune, too! I got the same disease (obviously!).
Josh Hall
10:40
@Felix, I may need to check that out. I picked up a black and white copy of volume 1, this one: Akira, Vol. 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1935429000/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ozk6AbZVN9M7... just to whet my appetite and see what it’s about.
Felix Lu
10:41
That's fine. But the box set is beautiful, if you can swing it.
Johnny
10:41
Do you store your art in your safe vertically?
Felix Lu
10:42
Half and half. The framed art is stored upright. The portfolios are, for the most art, stacked horizontally. There are several shelves, so everything is spaced out.
Tim D
10:42
@Chaz I would say start with a book/story/artist you enjoy. Personally my first page was a Cliff Chiang New 52 Wonder Woman page that also had Orion on it. I loved that and JH3/Blackman Batwoman but couldn't afford pages from that book at the time. I don't regret buying the Chiang WW pages at all.
Felix Lu
10:44
I'll add that it's OK to regret some purchases, especially early on. Don't be afraid of that...it's how you learn and how you calibrate. Just don't let it happen too often. Which shouldn't happen if you learn those lessons early!
Tim D
10:44
@Josh Chew was the book that got me back in to comics and a page from 37 was the 2nd original art purchase I made.
Felix Lu
10:45
Wow, TIm...you've come a long way fast!
Chaz West
10:47
@josh Hall i feel that, i've been hunting for something that jumps out at me but i usually jumps out at others, i think i need to be faster when i comes to buying art, by the time i talk myself into it, the art is usually sold
Felix Lu
10:48
That's OK, too. You'll figure it out.
