The promise of self lacing shoes...
John Butler
10:01
Got it. Makes sense.
David Mandel
10:01
@jasonK that's a tough one, Its actually quite similar-- the bigger GREAT pieces are few and far between, but you can always find something smaller/newer/that nobody else cares about
Ron Lim
10:02
hi Dave. Do you only collect screen-used props or replicas also?
Felix Lu
10:03
@David...that no one cares about YET;)
David Mandel
10:03
@Ronlim Hey Ron!  I had a few replicas back when I started, but over the years I have gotten rid of most of them as its confusing.  Unlike say a recreation with a new date on it or a different artists name, the average person can't tell so I would rather have originals all together

@David M.  Congrats on your new podcast --- love the stories, even though I'm not a props collector myself.  Thanks also for the McQuarrie art book!  That's my favorite SW related item out of the many dozens of SW books etc. in my house
Felix Lu
10:04
@David...I have a question. In the episode where you talk about the BLADE RUNNER blaster, you reference its appearance at World Con in 2009 and subsequent auction sale for $200K. Did you ever seriously consider going after it?
David Mandel
10:05
@FelixLu, when that piece came up, I did like it and thought about it, but the guy who ended up with it was a good friend and I knew 1. He really wanted it and 2. would go higher
So I didnt spend too much time on it
Felix Lu
10:06
@David...The reason I ask is because you spent $448K on the DKR splash about a year later. Do you prioritize one hobby over the other? Or same?
David Mandel
10:06
@felix I really do deal with it on a case by case basis, but I am lucky enough to have a large enough comic art collection that I can sell "extras" to pay for props, whereas my Prop collection is smaller
Hey Mike, thanks.  My co-authors and I tried to make the book we wanted to buy, its sort of what we do with the podcast, its a collecting podcast I would want to listen to, or why I do Felix's podcast, same reason
@JiggyCruz
10:06
Hi Mr. Mandel! LOVE your collection! What’s your latest acquisition? :)
David Mandel
10:07
I dont know if that is an answer but it feels like one
@jiggycruz comicart wise I just picked up a Gary Frank Action comics from his superman run-- I always wanted one and somehow missed out so I made an active decision to find one and I did
10:08
Propwise, about a month ago I acquired one of the staff of ra head pieces from Raiders of the lost ark
Robert Coleman
10:08
Hi Dave, a technical question about the podcast: is there a way to get a direct download of the mp3 without using Apple? I don't have an apple account & don't want to stream on my steam-powered phone.
David Mandel
10:09
@robertcoleman, I am so the worst person to ask this too.  Sorry, I dont know.  If you give me your email or give it to Felix, I can try to find out
Mikail
10:09
The piece that reflects the light?!?
Felix Lu
10:10
@Mikail...YES!
Victor B.
10:10
@Dave what’s your favorite Star Wars prop in your collection and is there something you are still searching for?
David Mandel
10:10
I know its on all the other pod cast services, but you might have register
Mikail
10:10
so flippin’ cool!
@JiggyCruz
10:10
Cool! I was curious about comic art but thank you for sharing the prop acquisition as well! :)
Malvin
10:10
Yoyo, evening everyone
Mikail
10:10
Next @David will tell us he has Luke’s robot hand
Felix Lu
10:11
@Mikail, no but he does own Mark Hammill's right hand.
David Mandel
10:11
@victorB, another tough one-- I think my favorite is probably my Chewbacca mask from A New Hope and then also used in the Holiday special for Mala.
As for stuff I am still searching for-- lots.  But the main thing would be a scratch built ILM model-- preferably of  recognizable ship
JasonK
10:11
yeah. the podcast if fantastic. love hearing the details and passion that overlap so closely with OA
Davide
10:11
@David do you have more fun today collecting props than original art?
David Mandel
10:12
@Davide, hi!  As they both have slowed down-- the market, the auctions, the COVID, having 2 things to be looking for, helps fill the time, so one is NOT better than the other
Mikail
10:12
@David - did Jerry Seinfeld, a collector of many other things, ever show an interest in OA?
David Mandel
10:12
@mikhail, no hand... yet
10:13
@mikhail, he very much did not.  Back in the day I was offered a couple of older Superman covers -- with BIG prices-- and I showed them to Jerry.  And while he is a car collector, he just didnt care about the art.  He thought they were neat to see, but not enough to buy
They weren't Curt Swan-- his fave artists-- but I dont think that would have made a difference
Ibzan M.
10:13
@David Your X-men comic art collection is mind-bogglingly awesome.  Just curious when you started to read X-men and what that series means to you.
David Mandel
10:15
@ibzan I started reading Xmen as a kid, and I was reading the reprints without knowing they were reprints.  Then I found the main book and came in with Xmen 138 right after Phoenix died and Kitty joined the team.  So 2nd/3rd grade for me.  And I read Xmen non stop for the next 20 odd years.  Now I am more off and on-- although I am really enjoying the new Hickman stuff-- but for those 20 years esp the Claremont stuff, that my book, it was like my soap opera.  It meant everything
Morgan
10:16
Dave, thanks for your contributions to marvel exhibit, it was a blast getting to see some of those pages in person a couple years ago. How stressful is it to have pieces of that caliber out on loan?
