Felix Comic Art Chat with DAVID MANDEL (11/7/20)

@morgan it has become more stressful as you can imagine.  On the one hand as real museums like the MoPop hold exhibits it means that they use things like professional art shipping services etc, so that is comforting, BUT because of what the art has become worth, even if I got the insurance money for a "ruined" piece, there are some pieces that would be almost impossible to replace.
How do you replace Giant Size Xmen 1, you know.
Davide
10:17
@DavidM is there a comic book story that you would love to adapt and direct as a tv series, or do you think that there are already way too many of them and still being creative is next to impossible?
David Mandel
10:19
There are 2 that come to mind.  there is a wonderful one part astro city story with the junkman that I always thought would make a killer film/short film or such.  And the second, is I am a big fan of Manhattan Projects and was talking with Jonathan Hickman a bit before COVID
Artless Artmore (mike)
10:19
@ David M.   I'd be curious to hear how many panel pages you've managed to retain from DKR despite all the deals and large pieces you've acquired in recent times.
David Blumer
10:20
Please do Manhattan projects!!  That book is incredible
Newell
10:20
I would love to see anything from Astro City brought to the screen...
David Mandel
10:21
@artlessartmore I guess when I think about it I do realize just how many I had at some point that I still have so many despite have de-acquisitioned a bit over the years.  I began to prioritize sequences that I could put together, issue 1 overall and certain things I didnt have-- like at some point I realized I didnt have a good Superman Batman page from 4 and had to make sure I found a good one.  But I guess I really did start with TOO MANY
Dan T
10:21
@David - any modern artists that you're big on from the OA side?
David Mandel
10:22
@DanT, these days I probably follow books that I like and then like the artist, and sometimes then follow the artist.  So for example, I really liked Walta's work on the Vision series by Tom King, and now I follow him.
10:23
Same thing is true with Headlopper, where I didnt know Andrew Maclean's work but I fell in love with Headlopper, then bought some art, and now look at his other work
10:24
But I still go to the comic store every week-- or rather get a shipment from my comic store every week as I go nowhere now-- and keep up with new books
Ron Lim
10:24
@DavidMandel or anyone else... we are all collectors, mostly older guys. Do you all have your written collectibles plan in the event of your timely or untimely demise?
Mikail
10:24
I’ve told my wife to call Felix
David Mandel
10:25
@ronlim, hoping more for timely, but my wife has been briefed on who to talk to... and who not to trust
Artless Artmore (mike)
10:25
@David M.  You have *all* of issue 1...
Malvin
10:25
@RonLim, if my lawyer ever finishes y will, yes
Mikail
10:25
Does the model for the original trench run still exist?
David Mandel
10:25
@mikhail, no it does not as far as I know
Mikail
10:25
what a piece that would be
David Mandel
10:25
@artlessartmore not all of issue 1 but a lot
Felix Lu
10:26
@David...haha!
Mikail
10:26
Sorry for the burst of questions - @David is basically living my best life
David Miller
10:26
@David - I don't recall if this was ever covered off on a Felix podcast but we're you collecting OA in '87/88 (can't recall the exact year) when Scott Free/Albert had the DKR OA at SDCC?  Or how soon after did you acquire a page and when do you recall the page?
David Mandel
10:27
@davidmiller I moved to LA in 95 and went my first SDCC in Aug 95 (or July that year whenever it was) and I saw what would become my first DK piece-- which was the DK poster piece over the city, the black and white version.  Danzig had it and one of his workers was an asshole to me and I walked away.  4 months later I was in NYC and Pete Koch had it and I did the deal
10:28
I think I told that part on a Felix show
I hold nothing back from Felix when he has me on
Jason D
10:28
Felix- this is great! Dave I know you are pretty active in the OA groups on Facebook and such, always get a kick out of it when you like something I post, but my question is, do you still go to shows- well when there are shows? and If so what is your favorite.
David Mandel
10:30
@jasonD, I used to travel the country going to loads of shows.  used to love the old wonder con in Oakland, Heroes in Charlotte etc.  That was all pre-family.  Nowadays I will hit a NYC show if I can make it work-- as my folks are there-- and I still go to SDCC which is not great, but I have come to like it again because my kids now really like going
So things change
Dan T
10:30
@Ron Lim - I'm in my mid40s and still a new collector, but starting to think about that.  I'm contemplating splitting it up among the friends I've made among comic book store employees.
Ron Lim
10:30
@davidM.... the who not to trust is something I've never considered
On DavidM's reply on who not to trust, who might that be? Feel free to DM me on CAF. I've mostly been buying not selling. Never crossed my mind on who not to entrust.
Felix Lu
10:30
@Ron...write me sometime. We can talk.

10:31
Hey David, always good to connect. its been a while. What is your favorite Marvel OA tht you have and one tht you wish you had?
David Mandel
10:32
@BrianChew, hey!!!  These "favorite" questions are sooooo hard.  I guess I would say Giant Size Xmen 1 is probably my favorite.  Although I might also pick a ditko spiderman piece.  But the wish I had is easy: Xmen 141 Days of Future past by Byrne/Austin, no question.
Carl Choi
10:32
@David in the latest episode of the podcast you suggested that everyone catalog their collections.  Any suggestions, tips, or great learnings you could share from your own experience on the best way to do so outside of the excel sheet?
David Mandel
10:33
@carlChoi, sadly I use the excel.  What I would say is take more than one pic with a prop-- document unique features or screen match marks.  I always try to keep track of what I paid so IF it ever leaves me, I know.  And I like to know who/where I got it

Felix:  Finally watching the "Art and Craft" movie.  It's amazing.
Felix Lu
10:34
@Tom...the guy who you see in the movie is the guy. A sweet soul/conman. He still sends me Christmas cards. Lovely guy who forges art.
