Felix Comic Art Chat with DAVID MANDEL (11/7/20)

@JiggyCruz

@FelixLu I never asked this to you but are you into props as well? :)
Felix Lu
10:51
@Jiggy...I flew to Hong Kong to meet the propmaster for John Woo's movies. I hoped to get Chow Yun-Fat's Beretta M92. It's a long story! But otherwise, no. I can only afford one stupid expensive hobby at a time!
Artless Artmore (mike)

@David M   I've listened to a couple of your podcasts, but not the one on missing SW art yet, so maybe this is covered there:  How much original trilogy preproduction SW art might be released to auction/sales in the near future?  Does Disney and/or Lucas own all of McQuarrie's sketches, drawings, paintings, etc.?  Will that all come to market?  At the same time?  How about Johnston's drawings?
David Mandel
10:53
@ArtlessArtmore, Lucas owns most of it.  Its amazing what he has.  Especially when it comes to the famous pieces.  And there are drawers and drawers of Mcquarrie and Johnston and other artists.  But there was so much and sequences-- especially storyboarding-- was done over and over and over as things were worked out, that there is still a lot that got out.  So there is usually some SW art in every good prop auction these days

There are cover bands in NJ that still sing Scotty Doesn't Know lol
@Davidmandel is there a piece of OA you wished you hit the bid button one more time that you were not able to acquire later?
Dan T
10:53
Might be time to dust off my DVD of Euro Trip and watch it again.  It's one of those movies that you just turn on/leave on, even if you're not fully paying attention.
Ron Lim
10:53
I even like Ladies Man
David Mandel
10:54
@jasonD most of my regrets I usually tracked down later and got, so nothing that leaps to mind, but there are still things I am looking for.  I mentioned that I got the Gary Frank Action cover, I have been trying to find a nice Captain America piece from brubakers run-- so not something I didnt bid on, I just wasn't actively looking and now I have realized I want one

the high mark of Clerks TAS is the “panda is driving car, how can this be” bit. Still kills me years later.
Ibzan M.
10:55
@dave I watched a lot of Veep in the weeks before our recent election, and man that show was so good even into its 7th season.  Why did you guys stop?  I was left thirsty for more.
David Mandel
10:56
@ibzanM, Trump made doing the show impossible.  Did you see today where they had a press conference in a strip mall next to an adult book store.  We couldn't compete.  Comedy requires a straight line of normalcy so you can be funnier than it, and that went out the window.  With any luck we get some normalcy back come January 21

Hi David_Mandel! Ever since you mentioned on the Felix podcast to always do your research before buying a piece, I’ve been following that advice and it has either a) kept me from grossly overpaying or b) helped me acquire undervalued pieces. Now I’m wondering if you have any advice on how to avoid burnout within this expensive hobby? What’s the secret to longevity here?
David Mandel
10:59
@JohnEspinoza, for a while as the hobby started to shift I was making myself crazy-- I would go to a show and not find anything and get angry that I had "wasted my time" at that show, etc.  So now my philosophy is "I am lucky if I add one piece I like to my collection each year".  And I can like something cheap or expensive as long as I like it.  But my expectation is that I will find/see very little be it the quality or the price that I like, BUT if I can find one....
JasonK
10:59
@dave and anyone else, you've talked before about aggressive perez prices. we now have 150k KJ, talks of 100k weapon x splashes. what do you think of these prices?
David Mandel
11:01
@JasonK, well I hate them.  Because I have 4 great KJ pieces but I would like more.  But 150K for an interior I probably won't ever get another.  That being said, I understand some of the higher prices more than others
David Blumer
11:01
@Jasonk I wish them dollars would go to the creators!!
@JiggyCruz
11:01
@FelixLu Agree! One stupid hobby at a time! LOL
Newell
11:01
uh oh @Ron, time to break out the Courvoisier? lol
Grant C
11:01
Did you pick up that Jurgens' Bizarro cover on ComicLink a couple months back? My first thought was, don't even bother... Mandel is snatching this one up. LOL
David Mandel
11:02
@GrantC, If its the one I am thinking of I used to own it and I got rid of it in deal.  I do like "all bizarro" BUT I prefer the older 60s examples
David Miller
11:03
@David who are the some of the more recent comedians you enjoy watching and what are one or two of your favorite podcasts?
David Mandel
11:04
@davidmiller I dont watch much stand up comedy.  So I will say John Mulaney because I watched it and thought that was great.  Podcast-wise, I have not been in my car because of COVID so i am way behind
Malvin
11:04
@david, yeah I was just reading about the press conference at the Four Seasons landscaping.  As my wife says, everything seems like an SNL skit!
Victor B.
11:04
@david brainiac story is one of my favorites. If you are willing to share, which action cover did you get from Gary’s run?
David Mandel
11:05
Artless Artmore (mike)
11:05
@David M  I do see some McQuarrie sketches from Empire for sale at the Propstore, and I almost pulled the trigger on one that sold there a couple months ago, but these are all pretty rough/modest pieces...I'll keep my eyes open!
brianchew
11:06
@DavidMandel with the new wave of artists using digital tech and foregoing OAs, how do you think this will affect all of our OA collections as the next generation of kids grow up and have no connection to print media? Will it just be our generation pushing this genre?
David Mandel
11:08
@brainchew, I honestly dont know.  At some point I was concerned but every year there seems to be new people that I hear about both buying and sometimes paying big prices.  So I think it find its own.  I try to buy something and while I hope I can "get out of it" if I need to, I buy it because I want to own it.  And I will let my family deal with it all after Ron Lim kills me
Felix Lu
11:09
@David...I'll squeeze an easy one in here...your house is on fire and you can only save one collection...which do you save? Comic art or movie props? You can't choose your favorites from each. It's all of one or all of the other.
David Mandel
11:10
I think the comic art- I think the comic art I have is more one of kind than the movie props I have, although I have some great ones
David Miller
11:10
@David is there a comic book, GN or novel you've read in the past year that really sticks out that you've recommended to your friends?
David Mandel
11:11
Lately lately I have given people Headlopper, Lazarus, and The back hammer books
Ron Lim
11:11
@Newell Pickled eggs.
Felix Lu
11:12
OK everyone, we're coming up to the end...so lightning rounds starts now! Hit us with any last questions/comments!

11:12
For anyone looking for background noise, Point Break is starting on the East Coast HBO feed.
Reba

I like Felix's idea of sticking to one expensive hobby at a time but, thanks to this chat, I discover a craving for an Excalibur helmet and a Ralph McQuarrie sketch. I think the next chat needs to be about interventions!
Victor B.
11:13
As always, thanks Felix and David for your time! Catch everyone on the next chat!
John Butler
11:13
@david, I gotta ask. When you're writing, do you start with character, or story?
David Mandel
11:14
@johnButler, when I am doing it write, the character drives the story so they are connected
Connecting…
