Crochet is pitching like an ace right now, is cheap and has years of control. But at the same time, he might hit a workload limit soon, which could give some teams pause about what they're willing to give up.
With Robert, he's a borderline MVP candidate at best, with years of affordable control, but has only stayed healthy for a full year once.
12:29
But to your question, the Dodgers have plenty of prospect capital to do whatever they want to do, yeah.
These rankings aren't gospel, but FanGraphs has their farm system third behind the Orioles and Cubs...

Should the tigers extend Greene?
Darragh McDonald
12:30
They should try! He's very good.
12:31
Depends if he wants to do it though. He's going to hit free agency after his age-27 season, so he could have a lot of money coming his way if he's willing to go year-to-year.

In your opinion, will some team sign Trevor Bauer?  It looks to me that he would be one of the top arms available.  Sign him for the minimum and if it doesn't work out cut him.  No loss of prospects to get a major league pitcher.  If I am the Orioles, he's be on the top of my list.  Unless there is collusion going on amongst the owners???
Darragh McDonald
12:34
There are Trevor Bauer questions in every chat, but sometimes guys just don't come back from DV suspensions. Roberto Osuna, Addison Russell, Starlin Castro.
Julio Urias probably not coming back either.
12:35
It's not 100% consistent because there are some guys with DV suspensions still in the league, like Aroldis or Marcell Ozuna. But I guess it's just a case-by-case basis as to which guys are deemed worthy of a second chance and which ones aren't.
12:36
As to Bauer specifically, he got the longest DV suspension in MLB history, so I'd be very surprised if anyone gave him another shot.

what are the Padres going to do with Kim? Are they possibly going to use him as trade bait for some improvements on the pitching side or resign him?
Darragh McDonald
12:37
At this point, I guess they just play out the season and give him the qualifying offer.
12:38
I suppose it's possible to trade Kim and move Bogaerts back to short, but doesn't seem like a good idea to try that now after the significant shoulder injury.
Maybe they can re-sign him in the offseason but he'll be in demand and who knows what San Diego's budget will be?

If the Giants are buyers, who should they go after?
Darragh McDonald
12:40
Probably a better shortstop than Ahmed, but I don't know if there will be one available.

Hot-shot Mariners prospect Felnin Celesten has been sidelined since June 20. No information whatsoever on his injury (?) available on the Internet. This happens over and over with minor leaguers, especially at the bottom levels. Why are the pro teams so coy with this info? What's in it for them? Are they just lazy? And why does the local press seem to go along with it?

Is there any hope for a 2nd half resurgence from J Suwinski? I really need some pop and I don't even know if he will be replaced by Palacios!
Also, is it time (past time?) to trade T Myers?
Darragh McDonald
12:45
I think there's hope, sure. His BABIP went from .290 last year to .229 this year.
12:46
His Statcast numbers have dropped a bit and he's striking out a bit less, so maybe he's trying to sacrifice a bit of power for more contact and it's not working. But he could adjust.
12:47
As for Myers, I'd be tempted to sell high. He has a 3.52 ERA but a 4.42 FIP and 4.11 SIERA. He might be getting a bit lucky so far.
Last time he was really good in the minors was before the pandemic.

Orioles fans are complaining furiously about the bullpen, but the pen remains successful and pretty highly ranked. Mike Elias obviously doesn’t want to pay the going prices. Do you think he can get away with doing nothing to bolster the pen, given the Os excellent offense?
Darragh McDonald
12:48
Lots of team need bullpen help right now and aren't paying the going prices. Rangers had to give up Cole Ragans to get an early deal done for Aroldis last year.
12:49
Teams usually play chicken with each other and make the deal closer to the deadline to avoid such an overpay. Not that the Rangers have any regrets. Flags fly forever and whatnot.

Framing is a skill that catchers are evaluated on. Is there a measurable tool for hitters who get the in between calls judged as a ball instead of a strike?
Darragh McDonald
12:51
That's a good question and I think there are people who measure such things. I don't have them off the top of my head, but I've seen people on X point out that veterans get the calls more than younger guys. Earlier this year, someone pointed out that Wyatt Langford was leading the league in borderline balls getting called as strikes.

12:51
For free agent signings in the offseason…it could help motivate signings by creating tiered deadlines. For instance if you sign before January 1st you can sign any deal you like. If you sign January 1st to January 31st you can sign up to a 2 year deal. If you sign in February you can only sign a one year deal. This business of keeping the mid-tier free agents from signing while a few hold the market for hostage isn’t really fair to the families of the masses nor is it helpful to those that sign late. See the fates of those that signed late this year. Thoughts?
Darragh McDonald
12:52
This would probably work in making things happen at a desirable rate but the players wouldn't go for it.
In general, they are going to be opposed to anything that imposes limits on free agency.
A deadline gives teams the chance to make lowball offers and say "take it or leave it."
12:53
They can kind of do that anyway, and might do it even more now after what happened to the Boras Four, but the players won't want it to be firmed up in the rules. The ability to walk away is a part of negotiating.

12:53
Um, Paul DeJong is readily available and MUCH better than Ahmed.
Darragh McDonald
12:54
DeJong looks good now and makes sense, sure. But he's also been terrible for the past few years.
12:55
And the Giants tried him last year and it failed, so, I doubt they'd do it again.
