Rocchio should get a chance at shortstop in Cleveland. Peraza could be a regular but it's probably not until 2025 (once Gleyber Torres hits FA)
3:30
I think Baddoo, Brennan and Pereira are all fourth outfield types. I like Brennan the most of the bunch but I was pretty bullish on him going into last year and he was only ok

Hi boss, are the Jays on the cusp of anything? I know they are interested in every player on planet earth

  • Even if they add a bat, the 2024 Blue Jays look considerably weaker than the 2023 squad, and they are certainly exposed to more downside risk. With this in mind, do you see a scenario where they shop Bichette or Guerrero if the team struggles? If so, which of them do you think they would prefer to retain, and which of them do you think is more likely to be moved?
Anthony Franco
3:31
I'm pretty confident they'll add another bat, likely at DH. I don't see any way they trade Bichette or Guerrero within the next year
3:32
Bichette's the one I'd rather have long term and imagine the organization feels similarly

Do you see anything in Hicks' profile that makes you optimistic he can start, or did the Giants take a very expensive shot in the dark?

I like the move to sign Jordan Hicks as a starting pitcher, 4 yrs, 44 mil. Rotation is coming into clearer focus. Starting out we got Webb, Harrison, Hicks, Stripling, Beck, Winn? And then mid season Cobb and Robbie Ray easing their way back in. So let's say end of July we got Webb, Harrison, Cobb, Ray, Hicks (Beck and/or Winn to swingman role). What do you think of the move?

What am I thinking? 4 year deal with Jordan Hicks to be a starter!?!?
Oscar Gamble
3:32
Thoughts on the Cardinals plan to try Jordan Hicks as a starting pitcher? He looked pretty tough as a reliever with Toronto.
Anthony Franco
3:33
Referenced this in the Giants question earlier, but I'm not a huge fan
3:34
Neither Hicks' health history nor his strike-throwing give me optimism that he'll make it as a starter. I didn't love the Reynaldo López  signing either, but I'd give López a better shot to start than Hicks
That said, the money itself isn't that crazy. We predicted him at 4/40 because he throws obscenely hard, is very young and gets a ton of grounders
3:35
Even if he ends back in relief (which is what I think will happen sooner than later) it's above market but not a disaster

Does Jackson Jobe see the majors this year?
Anthony Franco

'25 feels more likely. Only one start at Double-A so far and the Tigers were really deliberate with their position player prospects (Malloy, Keith, Jace Jung) in Scott Harris' first season as baseball ops president

What's your take on our off-season? We went from a Top 25 all time team in 2022 (based on run differential) to barely over .500 last season with virtually the same roster (except Rodon who didn't exactly help...)  Are we AL East favorites? If not, do we need to sign Blake Snell to be AL East favorites?

Thoughts on the value of Stroman's deal?
Anthony Franco
3:38
These are related so I'll take them together
3:40
On Stroman specifically: I like the value. About what we predicted but I thought there was a good chance he got three. The vesting/player option could get it there, but the 2/37 guarantee is strong. He's a good mid-rotation pitcher for me, and his rib injury was more poorly timed (right after the All-Star Break of his platform year) than something I find concerning moving forward
3:41
For the Yankees generally, I'm a fan of basically everything they've done. A little concerned about the rotation depth still but Rodón/Rizzo should bounce back and it's fair to expect Volpe to improve offensively
3:42
I'd probably have them a touch below the Orioles still. Baltimore's lineup is so good 1-9 and they have the farm depth to leverage it for starting pitching whenever Mike Elias feels like doing that
3:43
But it's close and the Yankees are a clear playoff team IMO

If the Brewers were to trade an OF, who would have the most value?  It seems that with Mitchell and Wiemer due to injury and ineffectiveness value would be down and Perkins value is limited.  Assuming Frelick/Chourio/Yelich would be the primary options, are there any teams that are looking for young OF help? Seems likely that one of this group is traded with pitching as a target.
Anthony Franco
3:43
Taking Chourio out of this because there's zero chance he gets traded
3:44
Of the others, I'd order it Frelick, Mitchell, Wilmer and then a gap to Perkins
3:45
As far as teams that could have interest, Miami and Seattle both make sense. The Padres would probably love to get one of these guys but they're light on MLB-caliber pitching even after the Soto deal

How shocked would you be if the Cubs sign Snell or Monty?
Anthony Franco
3:46
On a scale of 1-10, I'll say a 6
3:48
Large market team so it's hard to be stunned by anyone they sign, but they haven't been linked to either of those guys so far and signing either would push them firmly into franchise-record spending territory
Chris Getz
3:48
Is there any reason to believe I will bring in a true upgrade in RF as was implied in my recent press conference?  If so - what are you hearing?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Haven't seen any specific players tied to them but sure, I don't think Getz would've said they were exploring the RF market if they weren't. It'd have been easier for him to say they're 100% sure on Colás being the guy if they weren't going to add someone

Being a Nats fan...my head is already into: who are next Winter's free agents? Assuming our prospects make enough progress to do some shopping next year, who might we want to consider?
Anthony Franco

Full free agent class here:
3:51
If each of House, Wood and Crews stay more or less on their trajectories as top prospects, feels like starting pitching becomes the big question for them to pull out of the rebuild
Next year looks like a deep class, although things can change quickly with pitchers in particular
3:52
As far as specific names, if Walker Buehler returns to form next year after missing 2023 to Tommy John rehab, he'd be an intriguing target for Washington

3:53
Do you view the Dodgers' liberal use of deferrals in contracts is a legitimate concern for MLB or are the complainers simply envious the teams they root for cannot afford to do the same?
Anthony Franco
3:53
There's some amount of truth in both of these things IMO
