Clearly, some Giants fans who are mad about the Ohtani thing would've been perfectly fine with the deferral structure if he signed in SF on the same deal (which Zaidi said he offered). That's not to pick on Giants fans specifically, it's just how fandom works. You tolerate things that your team does and you'd be annoyed if your rival did the same thing
3:56
That said, I think the heavy deferral structure can make things easier for a large-market team and kind of incentivizes an "all-in followed by a rebuild" method of team building
3:57
This isn't unique to the Dodgers. The Nationals did something similar, won a World Series in 2019, then were terrible for five-plus years. It's worth it to them because they won, but it's not the kind of team-building I find most appealing for the game generally

Edwin Arroyo, India, Spencer Steer, chase Petty, Brandon Williamson, and mid level prospect  for Robert and Cease!  Who says no?

White Sox
3:59
Everyone involved on the Cincinnati side has value, so it's not necessarily "quantity over quality," but Chicago has to get two marquee pieces better than anyone in this proposal to move Robert and Cease

Free at last!
Anthony Franco

As someone who has had Michael Busch in a dynasty league for the last four years, hell yeah, free at last!

Even with the A’s probable move to Vegas, should fans have any confidence the payroll will go up?
Anthony Franco
4:01
In the long run, sure. It almost literally couldn't get lower, so that's part of it. But teams that tear down eventually build payroll back to some extent and Fisher's going to have to sign off on a vaguely competitive product to generate fan interest in Vegas
4:02
It won't be for a few years, though, and I can't imagine a John Fisher led team ever running top 10-15 payrolls on an annual basis

Message to Blue Light Special: anyone who is an A's fan after this farce should be shot into the sun.
Anthony Franco
4:03
Haha while I wouldn't blame anyone for sticking with their team, this is also a totally justified sentiment for A's fans (especially those in the Bay Area)
Oscar Gamble
4:03
What do you see as the future of Triston McKenzie?
Anthony Franco
4:05
He has a career 3.74 ERA, which feels about right. Good mid-rotation starter, don't think the stuff is overpowering enough to make him an ace
Frank
4:05
One interesting aspect of Chaim Bloom’s tenure in Boston is his producing 3 large contracts:  the extension of Devers, and 5 year deals with Story and Yoshida.  I have a feeling that based on allowing the size of those deals and possible displeasure at their outcome, owner John Henry may have even further curtailed attempts at significant free agent signings by Craig Breslow.
Anthony Franco
4:07
There's probably some truth in this, yeah. I don't think it's good process to determine your organizational plans based on a handful of deals you made but that doesn't mean Boston ownership isn't approaching it that way
Cleveland
4:07
Thoughts on anything the Guardians might realistically do?
Anthony Franco
4:09
I don't think they're doing much unfortunately. Obviously they're working with a limited budget at all times and it's magnified this year with the threat of Bally cutting their RSN deal
4:10
They should add a veteran rotational piece to the outfield -- an Adam Duvall or Tommy Pham type to get a little more slug, particularly against LHP
Beyond that, I think it'll be quiet

4:11
If everyone is healthy, who will be the Reds starting 5 to start the year?
Anthony Franco
4:12
At full health, I think it's Montas, Abbott, Greene, Lodolo, Ashcraft
Martinez is the next one up but can open the year in the bullpen. Williamson and Phillips are the top options in Triple-A

4:12
who are some starters on expiring contracts that you expect to be moved this coming trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Bieber and Quintana. Burnes would be the huge one if Milwaukee falls out of it. Maybe Alex Cobb
JL
4:14
What offer from the Orioles do the White Sox ultimately accept?
Oscar Gamble
4:14
Are the Orioles going to trade for or sign a really good SP?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Think they'll have to do something via trade eventually, even if they wait until the deadline
4:16
Cease makes sense. Trying to put together hypothetical prospect packages doesn't really work from the outside because we don't know how the Sox feel about each player
4:20
But from the general info that Chicago wants two high-end prospects and a couple mid-level guys, you probably need at least of Basallo, Kjerstad, or Mayo and then a couple from the Cowser, Ortiz, Norby, Bradfield group
Padre Jonathan
4:20
oops. Not sure why that sent early. Real question. It is getting a bit silly with Preller. 5 open spots on the 40 man at this juncture is unprecedented. Imanaga went for pennies. Hicks would have been a steal. I’m losing hope that Preller has a real plan at this point and I feel that the Padres should just file a lawsuit against MLB for putting us into this situation with their bungled Diamond Sports contract. (Forced upon teams by MLB).
Anthony Franco
4:22
The Padres aren't going to sue MLB over their local TV deal. The general frustration with San Diego's direction is understandable though. Saying it doesn't feel as if they have a real plan feels about right
4:23
They were hyper-aggressive on players when they didn't need to be (Bogaerts especially, but the Cronenworth extension and going five years for Robert Suarez also apply) and now they're left trying to patch holes with limited financial room to make up for it

Poll question? Vladdy A) Goes to arb B) Gets 2 year deal to buy out last arb years C) Signs huge multi year deal
Anthony Franco
4:24
The poll doesn't really work in the subscriber chats because there aren't many people in here (38 presently)
Personally, I expect he just goes year-by-year through arb though

Thoughts on Busch Almonte trade with Cubs? Do you see LAD going after another lower price FA SP before spring training starts?
