But the A's aren't trying this year anyways, so you can play one of those guys in a corner (even though they're both CF-capable) just to get them as many looks at MLB arms as possible

How long do you think the bigger bases and pickoff limits last? I get the sense baserunning is going to get silly and at least the pickoff limit gets undone next winter, if not earlier.
Anthony Franco
4:44
I don't think it's going to make as significant an impact as you do. I'm optimistic it leads to a little more baserunning but not so much it becomes a farce that has to get changed
4:45
We'll see though, won't know until they try it

Giants singings are short term often with opt outs. Could part of the reason they employ this strategy is that they believe farm is underrated? Harrison looks close. Lots of big arm bullpen prospects (Dabovich etc). Schmitt and Vaun Brown seem close. Healthy Luciano year could make 2024 debut a possibility...

I don't think it's really tied to the farm system so much as the front office's preference for rolling the dice on talented players without tying up too much long-term money
4:47
That's particularly true on the pitching side. Rodón and Gausman would take the kind of investment they don't seem keen to make. Gambling on Manaea or Stripling to bounce back in the short term (which is probably tied to confidence in their coaching staff to coax above-average results) doesn't take on that kind of long-term risk but requires giving those guys a chance to retest the market next winter if everything clicks

IKF for Kepler?
IKF for graveman?
Anthony Franco
4:47
Twins don't have a need for IKF with Correa back and Polanco at second
4:48
I'd rather have Graveman than Kiner-Falefa, particularly with Hendriks out indefinitely

Will Wacha have a mound? Where might that be?
Anthony Franco
4:49
He'll get a job, just seems like he's overvaluing himself on the market based on the ERA while teams don't see him as much different under the hood than he'd been for the past few years
I still like the Angels as a fit

Any last minute additions to the Red Sox? I feel that a left handed reliever and possibly another second base option should be considered. Otherwise I kind of like the way they look (IF everyone performs how they should). Could surprise people.
Anthony Franco

Lefty reliever and catcher seem like the biggest things. I know they're open to more middle infield help but I don't think there's a notable enough upgrade over Mondesi/Hernández/Arroyo for them to make that move

Is there going to be a "COVID-19 list" this year, or is MLB moving past it like so many other parts of life are? I  looked around for information and haven't found anything.
Anthony Franco
4:51
Don't know but I assume the COVID list is here to stay
4:52
Even with COVID itself not a huge concern at this point, the opportunity to shut down any player who's sick for a few days without requiring a 10-day minimum is fine

With Chisolm now slated for center, what does that do to Bryan De La Cruz's playing time?
Anthony Franco
4:52
Definitely cuts it back. He'll have to outplay Jesús Sánchez and JJ Bleday for left field work, and Jorge Soler could rotate in there on occasion

Just want to point out that Marcus Semien was on BA's Top 100 list before the A's acquired him, Bassitt, Phegley, and Ravelo for one year of Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa. What was unique about Semien was the A's thinking he could stick at SS... they had to fire their middle infield coach and bring back Ron Washington to help make that happen.
Anthony Franco
4:53
Fair point. He'd struggled as a rookie but wasn't well off the radar, yeah

What's the likelihood that Dylan Carlson loses his starting spot?
Anthony Franco
4:54
He's their best defensive outfielder so he should have a long leash

Is Royce Lewis a 3B now? Or OF? Or not gonna be a starter?
Anthony Franco

Still rehabbing from the second ACL tear so he's going to start the year on the injured list. If/when he's healthy again, he probably settles into a superutility role
Could help cover for Miranda at third on occasion, factor in at shortstop or center if Correa/Buxton get injured (although Michael A. Taylor reduces the latter need in the short term)

  1. Is Barlow being traded,
  2. if so, where do you think
Anthony Franco
4:57
Scott Barlow's certainly a plausible but not a likely trade candidate, in my view. If you want me to arbitrarily handicap it, like 30%?
Every contender should be interested if he's out there. Blue Jays have been linked to him before and make as much sense as anyone but two-thirds of the league could trade for Barlow and it wouldn't be surprising
Rangers13
4:57
Who do you see as the most likely LF trade candidate for the Rangers?
Anthony Franco
4:58
I did a full subscriber email on that this week, so check that out if you haven't already
4:59
Guess I'll say Santander if you want one specific name
KC
4:59
What's the future for KC's Michaael Massey and Maikel Garcia: regulars or bench players?
Anthony Franco
4:59
I think Massey can be an everyday second baseman. Garcia's probably a bench guy

A lot of people seem divided on Rolen making the HOF, what do you think?
Anthony Franco
4:59
Easy yes for me

I have been an Angels fan for over fifty years and I never felt worse than when Arte Moreno announced he was not selling. The Angels are the worst run organization in MLB and with Arte back it will remain that way. Any thoughts, Anthony?

Shohei’s good as gone now with me staying on right?
