That's a huge commitment for six months. Most players of that stature usually take more advisory roles in the front office

Will Daulton Varsho (ARI) catch in 2023 or will he just be an outfielder going forward?
Anthony Franco
3:19
Maybe some emergency catcher work but he's basically an outfielder at this point
Never was a good defensive catcher. Seems to be a great defensive outfielder
Brad

Any chance the White Sox give Lenyn Sosa a shot at the 2B job next year?
Anthony Franco
3:20
He'll probably get a chance to compete for a bench job and then eventually get an opportunity to play his way into an everyday role as the season goes along
3:21
Kind of as Danny Mendick was doing before he got hurt this year
But I don't think Sosa will be the Opening Day second baseman or anything

3:21
With the assumption that Xander is gone, and Story shifts to SS, do the Sox go with Arroyo at second? He's shown flashes, but his injury history and inconsistency worries me.
Anthony Franco
3:22
Think they'd add somebody better. Can either explore second base or center field, since Hernández can step back into the infield if they sign Nimmo or something
3:23
Arroyo's an ok utility guy but a win-now team shouldn't be pencilling him in for 500+ plate appearances

Hey Anthony,  thanks for doing this.  How far into the off-season do you plan to do so?  So, given how great he was this year (most probably the AL CY winner), but looking at his age (40) and wear-and-tear (multiple operations), how far would go go in the bidding in a Roto league (AL-only, 5x5) for Justin Verlander in 2023?
Anthony Franco
3:24
Hate to do this but I have to tell you to ask Brad on this one, sorry. I really have no frame of reference for what the prices look like an AL-only auction league. I've never played one
Brad
3:24
Did Drew Waters (KC) and Bubba Thompson (Tex) show enough to earn major league jobs next year?
Anthony Franco
3:24
Thompson, no. Waters probably, at least early in the season
3:25
The Royals will have less pressure to win right away than the Rangers, which gives them a bit more leeway with Waters, but it's very possible he strikes out so much he plays himself out of the lineup quickly

It pains me to say it but the Mets should let DeGrom, Diaz, and Nimmo walk.  They aren’t built to last long term and need to spread out their spending
Anthony Franco
3:26
I'd be surprised if they let all three go. Wouldn't expect all of them back either though
Losing deGrom would be so tough

If the Giants let Rodon leave, who is next in their line of "signing previous first round draft picks who were given up on by their former organization and excel in SF", a la Pomeranz, Gausman, Rodon, etc? I guess Manaea, Taillon, and Taijuan Walker would qualify...
Anthony Franco
3:27
Yeah I could see Manaea there. The fly-ball propensity shouldn't be as worrisome as it'd be other places. He does feel like their kind of bounceback flier

Anthony,  Will Matt Carpenter be back with the Yankees in 2023?
Anthony Franco
3:28
I think they'll get something done, yeah. He fits the ballpark perfectly, and he'd probably prefer to go back since they gave him a chance to resurrect his career
Brian
3:28
Any chance the Angels make Trout available in a trade?
Anthony Franco
3:28
Can't see it
Kirt
3:28
What do you think the Twins oufield will look like in 2023?   How about LF Larnach, CF, Buxton, RF Kepler? Have they given up on Kepler and expect Wallner to take over?
Anthony Franco
3:29
Yeah it's Buxton in CF and then a whole lot of questions. Does feel like Kepler's probably worn out his welcome there (from a performance perspective, not trying to imply anything personal)
3:30
Larnach and Kirilloff should get chances again in left. Nick Gordon's kind of in the mix. There's opportunity but there'll also be turnover. I think Kepler gets dealt and they bring in a right-handed bat of some kind

How common is the Christian Yellich situation….lots of so-so years, one incredible year, then total mediocrity?
Anthony Franco
3:31
Miami Yelich was a much better player than you're giving him credit for, and he was incredible for two seasons in Milwaukee
3:32
It is weird that he fell off so sharply heading into 2020 though. Obviously Milwaukee didn't see it coming. Closest player that springs to mind in following a similar pattern is Bellinger
3:33
Both those guys had serious injuries that probably played a role
Joey Gallo was never MVP good but he fell off out of nowhere. It happens unfortunately
Duffy Scliff
3:33
Any chance Toronto trades Whit Merrifield this offseason? His numbers improved in Toronto, but he doesn’t really have a clear spot on this team.
Anthony Franco
3:34
I don't think so. Atkins raved about him when they brought him in, and he played well down the stretch as you mentioned
Seems more likely they trade Biggio and make Whit the everyday second baseman with Espinal in a utility role

3:34
The Pirates have a glut of middle infielders throught the system. Who would you hold on to. And who would you trade?
Anthony Franco
3:36
This kind of thing tends to work itself out organically. Some of these guys will move to other positions (I expect Cruz will do this), others just won't play well enough to be regulars
3:37
I like Termarr Johnson the most of the bunch, as a more direct answer to your question, but the Pirates are in position to let things play out over the next couple years and see which guys cement themselves as core pieces
Andrew Friedman
3:37
If I could sign Aaron Judge or Trea Turner for say nine years and $300 million, wouldn't Judge be better for both the team and ticket sales?  Lux and Taylor can play middle infield, Judge and Betts in the outfield.
