I think Judge will sign for notably more than Turner, but yeah, I agree with your point
Mike trout
3:38
Which of the free agent SS and outfielders make sense for us
Anthony Franco
3:38
I actually have a "what I would do this offseason if I were Perry Minasian" piece that'll probably hit your email in like four hours
3:39
So that'll be a 2000 word answer to this question but generally, I'm skeptical that Moreno would approve signing any of the big-ticket shortstops
Bogaerts fits there the best to me if he does, but I doubt it. As for left field, I like Haniger or Brantley there alongside Trout and Ward

3:39
Who might the Pirates sign this offseason?
Anthony Franco
3:40
Not going to be a whole lot. Shelton said they want to bring in catching and first base help but it's going to be stopgap types
3:41
Mike Zunino, Joe Ross and Miguel Sanó, if you want me to throw some darts
Jessica

How likely do you think the Dodgers are to non-tender Bellinger, and how much of a splash does he make in the free agent market if they do?
Anthony Franco
3:42
Very likely to non-tender Bellinger. I think he gets like 1/12 as a FA

If Hoskins doesn't return to the Phillies this offseason, some internal 1B replacements include Hall or Schwarber.  Would you consider Harper?  It might help ease any future elbow issues and as a former catcher with some quickness, I think he could play a decent 1B.  Castellanos or Schwarber would DH, which was the original plan.
Anthony Franco
3:43
On occasion as a quasi-rest day sure but I think Bryce is too good a defensive outfielder to do this with any kind of regularity
Brad
3:43
The Angels appeared to have given up on Jo Adell.  Does he get moved this off season?
Anthony Franco
3:43
Don't think there's enough appeal there anymore they'd get an offer they find worth it

Mutual options are almost never exercised. The last example I could find where one was, was between the Rockies and Matt Belisle in the 2013/2014 offseason. What’s the actual point for a player having one in their contract?
Anthony Franco
3:44
Just an accounting quirk. It's a way of guaranteeing a guy some extra money (via the buyout) without including it in the salary
So you can delay when it gets paid out
3:45
If a guy is making $7MM in salary, it's evenly distributed throughout the season. If he's making $5MM in salary with a $2MM buyout on a mutual option, the $5MM gets distributed throughout the season and then the $2MM is tossed on at the end when the option's declined
3:46
Player still gets the same guarantee, but team essentially defers part of the payment

Your pick for the biggest free agent signing for the Cubs this winter is…
Anthony Franco
3:46
I don't know which one yet, but I'm coming around on the idea they'll sign one of the shortstops
3:47
I guess I lean Dansby of the group but am liable to change that 50 times between now and the start of the offseason
Madag
3:47
Who were your top five leadoff hitters this past season?
Anthony Franco
3:48
Oddly specific question haha. Really putting me on the spot to remember exactly where teams hit guys
Judge obviously #1
3:49
Mookie, Altuve, Schwarber, Nimmo round it out maybe
3:50
I guess Julio got a bunch of leadoff time at the end of the year too. Could make a case for Kwan or Springer idk. Lot of good hitters but I'll stick with the five I listed I guess
Rangers13
3:50
Verlander, Degroom, Rodon, Kershaw, Bassitt are all ace type pitchers. In my thinking minimally the Rangers need one from that group and a number 4 maybe a 5 starter. Who would fit in that 4 stage. I am assuming Gray and a resigned Perex are my 2,3 slots?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Bassitt's a tier below the other guys you mentioned for me
3:52
There's a huge chunk of #4/5 types the Rangers can (and will) choose from. Taijuan Walker, José Quintana, Jameson Taillon, Tyler Anderson, Syndergaard, Zach Eflin, Mike Clevinger, Drew Smyly, Johnny Cueto
Michael Wacha's in there too, Ross Stripling
Andrew Benintendi
3:52
Where will I be playing next year?
Anthony Franco
3:53
Texas, Miami, Giants all jump out. I'll take the Marlins for now
GBS42
3:54
How could it possibly have taken the Cardinals a month to diagnose a 1-ft change in Wainwright's stride length? That just seems like incompetence on someone's part.
Anthony Franco
3:54
It certainly doesn't seem like it should be possible given the amount of data and video they have
3:55
I will say, in their defense, his publicly-available release point data looks pretty much unchanged all year
So if his mechanics were off (and I don't doubt him when he says that), it doesn't seem to have notably changed where he was letting go of the ball
Rebuild
3:55
Would the Brewers be better off rebuilding? Trading away Burnes, Woodruff, Williams, Adames, and Lauer would net us quite the haul
Anthony Franco
3:56
I wouldn't go scorched earth, no. That's not really the way they operate, and I don't think it's necessary. Can trade one or two of those guys for upper level talent and try to run it back with mostly the same core
