I think a lot of people will like Robert Suárez, but yeah, I could see it

OK, here’s one of the many Ohtani questions you’ll get this morning.  I’m wondering what it would take to pry him away.  The Angels have several holes to fill.  Seems that any package would have to include a mix of prospects and also players with major league experience.  If a club was able to pull off a deal, how likely would it be that Ohtani’s camp would be open to negotiating an extension or do you think he’s definitely going to test the waters of free agency?
Anthony Franco
3:42
It takes a willingness on the part of ownership to deal him first, which I just don't think is there
If Moreno pivoted and allowed his front office to explore offers, they'd probably recoup two top prospects and some mid-tier pieces. I don't expect it to happen though

What’s up with Robbie Ray?  Alvarez fastball aside, something seems off.  Should the Mariners be concerned?
Anthony Franco
3:44
I'm a little worried that Servais didn't seem to trust him in the playoffs. Obviously he had the huge AB against Yordan but he probably wasn't getting a start and didn't come in until the 18th in the deciding game. That's alarming
3:45
But Ray himself, I don't see a whole lot different. Fastball velocity was down a hair, led to a little less swing-and-miss but nothing super worrisome. He gives up a bunch of homers, always has. Just have to live with those, but everything seems more or less the same otherwise

Does a manager of Bochy's pedigree provide any influence it getting desirable free agents to come play for their team?
Texas Fan
3:45
How does Boach help my Rangers
Anthony Franco
3:45
Generally speaking money's going to talk but I could see Bochy's presence having a bit of pull, yeah
3:46
He'll at least bring a track record and gravity to the role for the younger guys they're bringing up, which seemed to be something the Texas front office was prioritizing
Chris
3:46
Do you see the Rockies making a big push for Nimmo?
Anthony Franco
3:47
He makes sense on paper but it would require blowing by the franchise record payroll and a nine-figure deal for an outfielder for the second straight offseason
Unlikely but I could be talked into them as a dark horse candidate there

Will Ty Madden and/or Wilmer Flores debut next year?
Anthony Franco
3:48
I doubt it with Madden. Think we Wilmer Flores 2.0 by midseason, yeah
Cody Bellinger
3:48
One year eight million to Marlins?
Anthony Franco
3:48
I'd take the over by a few million on the money. Miami's a great fit, yeah
Don’t Steer Us Wrong
3:49
Is Spencer Steer a starter on the Reds Opening Day 2023?
Anthony Franco
3:49
He'd be my bet for Opening Day third baseman, yeah
Hits Like Rays
3:49
Other chats have mentioned the Rays might trade Randy Arozarena (making the league minimum salary in 2023) or Yandy Diaz (making about $2.7 million in arbitration) to save money for 2023. Would the Rays be better off trading Manuel Margot (owed $7 million) to a CF-needy team instead, and then just try to acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder to replace him?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Margot has yet to start the two-year, $19MM extension he signed last spring, so that's a tough sell for me. I think there's some surplus value but not much, so it'd mostly be about salary relief
They seem to like Margot a lot. He's a great clubhouse presence, pretty good player when healthy. Don't see him moving this winter

If the Braves can trade Ozuna somehow, which available left fielders would they target? Could they make a monster package to get Reynold and their closer?
Anthony Franco
3:54
It's a really weak farm system from which to put together something to pry Reynolds and Bednar, neither of whom the Pirates are motivated to trade. Maybe you start with William Contreras or something, and even then, you may have to deal off the big league roster around him. Wouldn't be easy

Will Brett Baty start the season as the Mets 3B next year?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Probably Escobar to start after his strong finish
Wayne
3:55
If the Phillies were to seek a #3 or #4 starter this offseason who would you sign?
Anthony Franco
3:55
I think I like Quintana most out of the group of 3/4 starters available personally
Heaney's interesting as well, but I don't love the fit with a very hitter-friendly park for a guy who gives up so many homers
Arthur Dent
3:56
With a couple years of hindsight, what’s your take on the whole Astro’s cheating scandal?  Was a blackmark for sure but does it permanently tarnish what is turning out to be a pretty amazing run with for Altuve, Bregman, Verlander and company.
Anthony Franco
3:56
Even at the time, I wasn't super upset by it. Obviously it should never have happened, and if you want to assign a mental asterisk for their World Series, I wouldn't argue with you
3:57
But they were my World Series pick going into 2017. I thought it was the best team in baseball long before they started doing the sign-stealing stuff. I think they were as good a bet to win that year even if they hadn't. Didn't expect them to miss a beat going forward and they haven't
3:58
Which I guess you could argue makes it worse. They cheated when they almost certainly did have to. Doesn't excuse it, but I'm past it
Aaron Judge
3:58
Where do you see me next year
Anthony Franco
3:58
Yankees
Dave Roberts
3:58
We won’t have Buehler next until maybe late and Gonsolin and May were shaky down the stretch. What do you think we do
Anthony Franco
3:59
Try to bring back Kershaw. Sign someone like Sean Manaea and let Mark Prior make him incredible
I don't think they'll QO either Heaney or Anderson, expect both guys to sign elsewhere
Crash

With the rumors in bluejay land that a) they are considering not trading from their catcher depth, thus using moreno as a multi-position player and b) reluctance in spending on free agents, do they have enough prospect depth/trade value else where on mlb roster to make significant upgrades to their pitching staff that they sorely need?
