I still feel ok about Bregman and Adames because of the defensive value. Obviously Chapman did well on his extension too
3:39
But to your general point, yeah, I'm a lot less bullish on the market fringe All-Stars or "just" decent regulars. The TV stuff isn't going away. I'm lower on the free agents who'll fall like 8th-25th in the class than I was last offseason
3:40
Maybe that's an overcorrection after we were way too high on almost everyone last year -- aside from the Ohtani deal that no one could've predicted -- but I think last winter was the acceleration of a real trend of teams devaluing mid-tier hitters, in particular

Is Levine's departure from the Twins just a familiar leadership team agreeing that they need some type of change? (Levine is someone who seems to have previously turned down other opportunities.) Or is it a sign that there are perhaps deeper disagreements within the Twins organization on how to proceed? Some fans, as you know, directly called out the Pohlad family at the end of the season.

I would guess that it's a decision Levine made to pursue other opportunities. Similar to the Jays' situation from earlier, if Minnesota ownership was really displeased, they could've very easily moved on from the entire trio of Falvey, Levine and Baldelli with the way the season ended

Do you think the Braves will try to find any takers on a Soler trade over the winter? I really hate the idea of him playing in the outfield next season and Ozuna is blocking him at DH.
Anthony Franco
3:44
Yes, for the reason you mentioned. I liked the Soler move to try to inject some life into a terrible offense at the deadline. Didn't really work although Soler himself was good down the stretch. I don't think it's a viable solution for a full season, especially with Acuna coming back

Off the wall question, what if franchises could trade owners?  Arte Moreno for the Montforts?  Would be fun!
Anthony Franco
3:44
Oh man
3:45
Aside from John Fisher, I don't think there's any owner I'd trade for Arte Moreno

What does St. Louis receive for Ryan Helsley?
Anthony Franco
3:48
He'll bring back a lot. $7MM for a season of an elite closer is really valuable. The difference between a full season and a deadline deal for a reliever isn't as big as it is at other positions, but I'd still take Helsley over half a season of Carlos Estévez and Tanner Scott -- both of whom landed multiple decent prospects headlined by a fringe Top 100 type

Brent Rooker seems like an obvious offseason target for the Jays. The two teams have lined up on past trades, he's exactly what Toronto's lineup needs, and they have some players that seem like "A's types" in Horwitz, Barger, Clement to include in the deal. That said, who's the headliner beyond those lesser names that would make the A's pull the trigger? The Jays' system isn't exactly overflowing with top prospects or pitching depth.
Anthony Franco
3:51
Yeah that's a tough one to pull off. Rooker just keeps mashing and the Jays don't really have the headliner top prospect, as you mentioned
3:53
Yesavage is probably light as a headliner for Rooker. Orelvis and Tiedemann are arrow down guys.

Something like Yesavage, Horwitz and Jonatan Clase feels like an A's-style package but it's probably too similar to the kind of deals they've whiffed on (including Chapman) to make again
3:54
In general, I just don't think the A's are going to trade Rooker. He'll make around $5MM, they basically have no other financial commitments, and they're starting to show life on the position player side at least

during coming offseason, any status prediction on Cleveland 1B Naylor, 2B Giminez, OF Thomas ?
Anthony Franco
3:55
An approximate $12MM arb salary for Naylor feels too high for Cleveland. I think they'll trade him and give a longer look at Manzardo at 1B
3:56
I expect them to keep Giménez and Thomas

3:56
Do you think the A’s will spend at all? Two mid tier SP with their young hitting and they could possibly contend for the last WC
Anthony Franco
3:57
Guess it depends on what you consider mid-tier SP. I think they'll aim higher than Alex Wood and Ross Stripling but I wouldn't expect them to sign a Severino or bring Manaea back
3:58
A two-year deal for a Heaney type and then one year for Lorenzen or something should be viable though. They need to spend some amount of money and I agree that the rotation is the place to do it

There have been a few recent 'trade rumors' or at least ideas floated where the White Sox and Orioles could connect around a Robert for Holliday package.  For that to occur I think the Os would have had to have lost SOME confidence in Holliday and feel like Robert just had a down year and will rebound.  Do you think there's any possibility of something like this occurring?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Nah, I don't think Holliday is a realistic ask in a Robert deal
If Holliday still hasn't established himself by next summer and Robert's back at peak form, sure, but Baltimore's not doing that right now with the way Robert played this season

Do you think Dodgers will after Adames in free agency or go with Rojas, etc until Freeland is ready— probably late in 25
Anthony Franco
4:01
I'm sure they'll poke around on Adames and Kim but I think the Rojas stopgap to Freeland is fine and there'll be other teams more motivated to add at SS

4:01
odd the giants sign Soto? Or any other big names?
Anthony Franco
4:02
Talked Adames earlier. If they miss there, I could see a splash for one of the top starters. Burnes seems unlikely -- at that point, why not bring Snell back instead -- but any of Snell, Fried or Flaherty would make sense to me
4:05
I'm sure they're going to check in with Boras on Soto but I'd probably have them like seventh or eighth if I were listing odds for every team. Not as clear cut of a contender as a lot of the other teams that'll be involved and I don't know that they'll keep pace in a bidding war between the New York franchises. Guess I'd put the odds of him going there around 5%?

4:05
In light of the tigers success this season, will they be more aggressive in the offseason?
Anthony Franco
4:06
I think they would've been more aggressive even without the second half success. The rebuild needed to end by next year in either case
4:07
But sure, it's probably easier to sell the vision to ownership when they've seen the young hitters take steps forward already. Obviously there's a window to maximize while Skubal is healthy and under team control. They'll add at least one real starter
4:09
I will say that the play down the stretch makes me feel better about Trey Sweeney being a reliable starting shortstop. He's at least been a huge boost defensively. I thought a couple months ago that they should've made a push for Ha-Seong Kim if he wasn't committed to staying on the West Coast. I don't think that's the case anymore and would pour most of the resources into the rotation behind Skubal and Olson

Do you see Nolan Arenado waiving his not trade clause?
Guest
4:09
Mariners need to improve at third and the Cardinals look like they are making a reset.  What more would need to be included if the Mariners sent Mitch Haniger and his $15 million 2025 salary and took Arenado and let's say $10 million to offset his remaining $42 million in 2026 & 2027?
Anthony Franco
4:10
An Arenado trade seems viable. He clearly stayed there in large part because he felt they were set up to contend for at least another few seasons. Can't imagine he's thrilled with the change in direction
4:13
I like the Mariners as a fit if Arenado's willing to move. Haniger does nothing for the Cardinals obviously, but it's possible that's a necessary counterweight for Seattle to make it work financially. If they're paying Arenado down to almost cash neutral for next season, the Cards will probably want to build it around a Top 50-100 type prospect
