They could do DH relatively cheap, spend like $14MM to bring Goldy back and bring in two leverage bullpen pieces with that
And that's before a potential Monty/Suarez trade. I don't you're getting a new Walker deal, Joc back and Tanner Scott, but they can do some stuff
Joe schlabotnik
4:28
Brewers central favorites? Does Ortiz stay at 3B, or move over for Bregman?
Anthony Franco
4:28
I do not think the Brewers are spending nearly $200MM for Alex Bregman. Would still have them as the early NLC favorites depending on what the rest of the division does
4:29
Ortiz probably moves to shortstop with Adames walking
Positively Half St.
4:29
As much as we Nats fans want Juan Soto back, the wisdom of crowds seems to argue against that. Who should be the top target otherwise?
Anthony Franco
4:30
It'd be one of the top three starters for me, probably Fried. Mike Rizzo seems to like the in-house rotation more than I do, though, so I think they're likelier to make a play for an Alonso or Walker to add an impact bat
4:31
I like the rotation reasonably well but it's still lacking a true top-end arm. Maybe Cavalli could be that but it's tough to bank on right now
Fred
4:31
Do the Cubs have any advantage in signing Corbin Burnes with Counsell being here? He would make the starters fearsome IMO.
Anthony Franco
4:32
I assume Burnes is just going to go where the money's the best, but the Cubs have the ability to make that happen. He's an obvious fit on paper, mostly comes down to whether Ricketts is willing to do it and take them to the edge of CBT territory

Is Morton a good choice for Atlanta ? At what price? See ! no Murphy question.
Anthony Franco
4:33
Ha, I hope you took last week's answer in good faith! You have actually swayed me on a Murphy trade
4:34
Still feels like Morton's going to retire. That was  the assumption among most of the Atlanta beat right after the season. Even if he comes back, I think it's time for the Braves to aim a little higher
4:35
Morton's had a really good run there but the swing-and-miss is starting to trend down and the home runs jumped last year
Guardians Fan
4:35
Who are some names that you could see the guardians looking to acquire via trade or free agency this off-season?
Anthony Franco
4:36
I've loosely got them penciled in for Walker Buehler and Danny Jansen on our Top 50 picks. Thought about just giving them Boyd back instead of doing the Buehler reclamation thing
4:37
Erick Fedde in trade makes a lot of sense there again
Brad
4:38
Do you think the Red Sox will trade for a frontline SP, sign a free agent, or neither? Any targets?
Anthony Franco
4:38
I expect them to sign one of the top four guys (Burnes, Snell, Fried or Flaherty)
Tony
4:38
Thanks for the chats! How do you rate the importance of the starters vs bullpen in regular season? Playoffs? Thanks
Anthony Franco
4:39
They're kind of blending together, especially in the postseason. Teams go to starters out of the bullpen all the time in October
4:41
I'd take an ace over anything else. I don't think that's especially controversial and it's a hell of a lot easier said than done. I do think there's something to the idea of teams being overly reliant on single-inning relievers in the playoffs -- both because it's draining physically and it gives the same lineup multiple looks at that pitcher in consecutive days
4:42
Feels like the middle ground is to have a lot of quasi-tandem starts in the playoffs. The handful of aces still go 5-6 and the rest of the starters are on hand to go 3-4 at a time rather than turning to the same setup man for one inning in six consecutive games

4:42
Which player(s)’ performance(s) in the playoffs most helped or hurt their free agency hopes?
Anthony Franco
4:43
We talked about Buehler. Steve and Darragh were a little more receptive to the idea that he made himself a good chunk of money than I was. I think Gleyber continuing to hit well in October is a big help, if only because it puts his terrible April further in the rearview
4:44
There's no one that we've moved down because of a bad postseason

The Pirates could use an affordable 1B with some pop. The Orioles need to make room for Coby Mayo and other young bats, and Mountcastle is a bad fit for their ballpark and getting closer to FA. Meanwhile the Orioles need bullpen help and Bednar’s coming off a bad year and getting pricier for the Bucs. Could the Orioles and Pirates match up on some kind of deal that sends Bednar to Baltimore and Mountcastle to Pittsburgh?
Anthony Franco
4:45
Yeah I like this one a lot for all the reasons you mentioned

How will the Royals bring in corner OF help?  Sign a FA like Santander or Teoscar?  Trade from pitching depth?  Or merely count on improvement from within?
Anthony Franco
4:46
Feels like a free agent addition there. I like the Profar fit. Tim's all in on Santander to K.C.
Tim to our group chat at 10:58 am: "Santander is a Royal. I need this"

Bellinger looks like an ideal fit for the Giants. LHH, athletic, can play 1B or any of the three OF spots. Would enable them to dangle Wade and Yaz in the trade market as well. What are the chances he opts out and are we talking 4/110?
Anthony Franco
4:48
Feels really high. Just don't see him getting a $27.5MM AAV after a season where the numbers backed up a bit and he didn't answer any of the questions about the exit velocities
4:49
We were around 4/75 on his earning power if he opted out. None of us think that's good enough to pass on 2/50 when he could opt out again next winter
4:50
I think he's very likely to stick around, though I know Darragh was more in the "lean towards opting in" camp rather than considering it a lock
Even if he does, I agree with everything you said on the Giants making sense (especially if they trade Yaz) and could still see them working out a trade. Doubt the Cubs are beholden to keeping Bellinger when they've got PCA in CF and could give Suzuki more time in right
Rizzo
4:51
Yankees are in a bind at 1st. Rizzo has $11 net team option. Is there really someone out there for that price that is cheaper or better than rizzo?
Anthony Franco
4:51
I'd take Carlos Santana over Rizzo at this point and expect Santana to sign for like $6MM
4:52
I also don't know that they need to sign someone cheaper than Rizzo. Why not just aim higher and go after Christian Walker?

We all know the Mets are putting alot of their eggs into the Juan Soto basket, but re-signing with the Yanks is a strong possibility. If the Mets miss out on the big prize, what do you see as some potential plans B,C, D, etc.? Heavy offer on Burnes and/or Fried? Brining back Pete, which they may do anyway? Trading McNeill & a prospect package to CWS for Crochet? I refuse to believe that with the years of payroll planning seemingly in place that Cohen & co. wont walk away with significant upgrades to a team that came within 2 wins of a pennant. Thoughts?
