Mr Red Leg
3:33
Do you think the Red Sox would trade Durran straight up for Lodolo?
Anthony Franco
3:34
I think it's a workable framework for a bigger deal but would be surprised if Boston did that one for one
3:35
They've got the extra control year on Duran and Lodolo's got enough injury questions to give a little bit of pause
Bill
3:36
Who will close for the Braves next year and who will play short?
Wandering Chief
3:36
I'm hearing chatter about Bichette matching up well with the Cubbies at either second or third, and Hoerner being the player to leave if that happens. If he does become a trade piece, what would it take for the Braves to grab him?
Anthony Franco
3:37
I don't expect the Cubs to do this. Why not just spend on a top-of-the-rotation starter that addresses a need in the short term?
3:39
If they are going to trade Hoerner, I imagine it's for starting pitching, which the Braves don't exactly have in high supply. Atlanta's not giving up Waldrep or Schwellenbach for one year of Hoerner. I don't think Fuentes is moving the needle for the Cubs, and Smith-Shawver's halfway through TJ
3:40
Kim's the default answer to play short, and they'll probably get something done because they have to. If not, I guess trade for Brayan Rocchio and hope something better is available in July
3:41
AA made it sound like they're focusing on shortstop and mid-rotation starter and backfilling the bullpen cheaply later. I'll take Emilio Pagán or Seranthony Domínguez to close there

David Morgan to the Mets for Senga?   who says no
Anthony Franco
3:42
Yeah I like this one, could see this working for both teams. Morgan's good
Mariners
3:43
If the mariners sign multiple big free agents, how easy would it be for them to trade Luis Castillo to free up budget room?
Anthony Franco
3:45
I imagine they'd be able to offload the whole thing, sure. 2/46.5M (including the assignment bonus) seems fine for Castillo. No longer has a full NTC. I imagine the Giants, Braves, Orioles, Mets, maybe A's would all be happy to take that on
Tarik Barrick
3:45
Could you see the Tigers trading Torkelson and moving Keith to 1st base if Torres and McGonigle are both there next year?
Anthony Franco
3:47
I don't really see it. If someone's giving them a mid-rotation starter with multiple years of control, ok, but I doubt that's out. Tork's their only real source of RH power
3:48
Gleyber's fine. They clearly like him more than I do, but he's not an impact RH bat. Dingler's a really good all-around player but not a true middle-of-the-order type. Tork has a skillset that they're otherwise lacking

3:48
If the Tigers are 7 up and Tarik Skubal is 13-2 just before the deadline, what do they do?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Keep him and make the qualifying offer. Easy call

I keep seeing articles (probably AI) about the Guardians possibly trading Kwan.  I know it of course could happen but is there any way Cleveland could afford to extend him?  I know he is an elite defender and a great contact hitter but he does not put up huge power numbers or drive in that many runs since he leads off.  It just seems like some guys are worth spending a bit of a cash on.  I'm not asking for Kyle Tucker, just Kwan.
Anthony Franco
3:50
I don't think they will do this but there's no reason they couldn't. It'd basically be a repeat of the Andrés Giménez deal that they offloaded on Toronto

Why is the pace of the MLB offseason so slow in recent years? The biggest free agents in the NFL and NBA sign on the first day of free agency and some of the biggest names in baseball are still available when spring training starts.
Anthony Franco
3:50
It's the salary cap/floor
3:51
All NFL and NBA teams have a narrow budgetary window that's permissible under the CBA. It's a lot easier to map out an offseason when every team knows not only what they can spend but more or less what other teams are going to do
3:53
It's also a lot easier for players to make decisions because there's a fixed upper bound on the amount of money to go around. MLB doesn't have that -- teams choose their own budgets -- so there's more reason for free agents to wait around for weeks and try to drum up prices

Will the Reds sign D Williams, J Naylor or K Schwarber!
Anthony Franco
3:53
I gave them Naylor on the top 50, so I hope so

Would the Angels have what the Twins would be looking for, to trade for Royce Lewis?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Not really seeing the point for Minnesota of doing this right now. Value's at a low ebb, he's cheap and going to play every day, and they've seen what he's capable of when he's at his best
3:56
Maybe the Twins really love Christian Moore or something and would jump at a swap, but I don't think the Halos would do that coming off the year Lewis just had and don't see why Minnesota would be inclined to lower their ask

Is a Sean Manea($50 million), Frankie Montas($17 million) trade for Arenado($40 million), Sonny Gray($40 million), Wilson Contreras ($40 million) a plausible trade? The Mets have money could use Gray, Arenado and Contreras and the Cardinals desperately need pitching so they don't have to rush their pitching prospects that need more time in the minors. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
3:57
Doesn't really do anything for the Cardinals
3:58
Montas is probably out for the entire season. He's just dead money. All this does is swap Gray and Contreras for an inferior pitcher signed for the same amount of time

Please tell me you are not advocating for a salary cap in baseball. It's just a way for owners to pocket even more profits. Don't give the Red Sox an excuse to spend less when they continue to raise ticket prices but drop in their comparative plater payroll.
Anthony Franco
3:59
Not advocating for the cap, just answering your question as to why those other leagues move faster
I much prefer the slow offseason personally. There's more drama for MLB in February than there is for the NFL/NHL in August. It's also just much better for my job
4:00
Having a few days of utter chaos where we don't have time to breathe followed by months of dead time seems awful. Don't envy the writers at the other Trade Rumors sites on that haha

Nootbaar to the Royals for Kris Bubic?  Noot’s surgery clouds his trade value, but he has two years of control compared to one for Bubic.  A reasonable foundation for a trade?
Anthony Franco
4:01
While I can see the argument that they're similar on value, not seeing why the Cards would trade for a rental starter unless there's a conditional extension built in or something
4:02
A healthy Bubic would probably be a better deadline trade chip than Noot, I guess, but it's more risk averse to just trade Nootbaar for prospects

if youre the Padres do you put Miller in the rotation and sign someone like Fairbanks/Iglesias and then put Milled back in the Pen if you make the playoffs for a super bullpen?
