Assuming they land a top SS, what else can Phillies do? badly need Rotation Depth, bullpen
Anthony Franco
3:38
Ha yeah I absolutely wouldn't argue for Familia
3:39
I pushed Carlos Estévez to a three-year projection on our list (past a very reluctant Tim haha), but if he ends up settling at two, I'd happily jump on that
3:40
Will Smith was quietly really good for the Astros after the trade, Seth Lugo's a rock-solid setup type. Trevor May's pretty good annually. There's a lot of decent relievers, should do better than Familia and Hand this time around
3:41
There's also a fair bit of back-of-the-rotation depth in free agency. I'd take a bigger swing for SP than shortstop if I were the Phils, but if they focus on the position player side, then the Stripling/Quintana types make sense
Around the turn...
3:41
So, with the Rule V draft around the corner, I wanted to ask a question about the rules. Are guys who sign minor league deals or split contracts eligible to be taken? Say, for example, Sean Doolittle, who signed a MiLeague deal with the Nats.
Anthony Franco
3:42
Yeah you can do this. It almost never happens -- if you were willing to commit the guy an active roster spot, you'd have probably just offered him a major league deal straightaway -- but it's possible
Tom
3:42
Do you see Orioles as darkhouse for any top FA? Maybe Nimmo? Who could they sign?
Anthony Franco
3:43
I wouldn't expect them to get any of the nine-figure types. Elias said payroll's going up but also said they don't want to go 0-60 MPH in one winter, which feels like GM speak for "don't expect one of the shortstops"
3:44
Nimmo feels superfluous unless you're first dealing Mullins for an above-average starting pitcher. Pushing either of those guys to a corner diminishes their value a bit
3:45
I think they're more likely to top out with one of the good but not elite starting pitchers: Taillon, Manaea, Walker, Syndergaard and perhaps consolidate some of their prospect depth in a trade for a rotation piece
Cory
3:45
It feels like the rumor mill has been slow on the shortstop front. Is everyone still in the very early stages of exchanging figures/negotiation?
Anthony Franco
3:45
It's just early. This is how the baseball offseason typically goes
3:46
Last year was an anomaly because everyone knew the lockout was coming and most people wanted to establish some certainty before the freeze. That time pressure's not there this time around
Brewers
3:46
I know this sounds crazy, but I thought Stearns moves at the deadline seemed like they were made by someone who did not want his job (giving up a prospect for Rosenthal and letting Lamet go after trading for him). Do you think that his lack of interest in being the President of Baseball Operations for the Brewers resulted in him making those two bad/confusing moves?
Anthony Franco
3:46
Not at all
The Giants have already traded the prospect they got for Rosenthal (Tristan Peters) for a player whom the Rays weren't going to protect in the Rule 5 draft
3:47
He's interesting but not a huge talent. They took a swing at Rosenthal knowing the risks. It didn't pan out, but they didn't give up a whole lot
3:48
The Hader trade, obviously, was much riskier. I think they legitimately underrated the effect it'd have in the clubhouse but also got very unlucky that Taylor Rogers, who's still a good reliever, gave up a million home runs the second he landed in Milwaukee
3:49
Steve and I were talking at the time the Hader deal broke about how much we both liked it for Milwaukee. We were probably wrong, as was the Brewers front office, but I thought it was a good move at the time

Its feeling like the M's are on the outside looking in at the SS market and focused on other upgrades. They won 90 games last year after a rough start and getting very little from Winker, Frazier, Kelenic etc who were all expected to be  contributors. Are you on board with the plan to skip the top end of the free agent market and retain some flexibility while also expecting a full year from Castillo and a potential faster start from Julio to make up the difference? I fully expect them to be in on Nimmo, Senga, Yoshida but not on Turner, Correa, Bogaerts. And, as a follow up, is it possible the focus on flexibility and staying away from a big commitment is a sign they are going to make a run at Ohtani next year?
Anthony Franco
3:50
Yeah everything you said here feels about right. I could see them earmarking some future money to at least be in the mix for Ohtani, and I think it's a perfectly reasonable team-building strategy
3:51
They're really well set up for a long time. They'll have to address second base somehow, but it's not a failure of an offseason if their biggest acquisitions turn out to be Teoscar and a trade for someone like Wong

3:51
When will a list of free agents for *next* off-season be available? Curious to see who might be on the market next year for teams who miss their targets this year.
Anthony Franco
3:51
Ha, you and Tim are on the same page
3:52
He's been putting that together this week. The hope is to have it ready around Thanksgiving, when there's not likely to be much actual news
Naterz
3:52
Mike Moustakas for Aaron Hicks. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
3:53
Don't really see the advantage for the Reds. They're spacing out the money this way, but they're just taking on an extra $8MM overall for a player they don't want
3:54
Unless the Castellini family is dead-set on paring back payroll as far as possible this year, I wouldn't bother. Pay Moustakas out next season when you'll be bad anyways and move on
Spirited conversation

Why did the Rays choose Siri over Josh Lowe last year?
Anthony Franco
3:55
They're pretty comparable players but they probably like Siri a little more defensively

Is Grandal available? Would rather see that happen and bring up Pages after his solid AFL showing than spending on Contreras. Send them Knizner, Moises Gomez, and maybe Luken Baker to get it done? Not sure what the Sox need back so could be off on the return...
Anthony Franco
3:56
If the Cardinals offered to take the last year and $18.25MM off the White Sox's hands, Chicago would jump on it
St. Louis would have to feel pretty strongly about Grandal bouncing back from a truly awful season, but it is a short-term bridge to Herrera
Anita
3:57
Could you get Trevor Rogers from Miami for Cavan Biggio and Otto Lopez?
Anthony Franco
3:57
No, Rogers isn't that far into sell-low territory
Thank you for the chat!
3:57
Would IKF for Rasiel be a framework that would work for both teams?
Anthony Franco
3:58
I don't think Atlanta's doing this. The Raisel trade felt like a preemptive move to lock in the ninth inning if/when Kenley Jansen walked as a free agent this offseason
3:59
It frees up a bunch of money for them and kind of addresses shortstop, but they were happy to take that contract on a few months ago and Raisel was awesome for them down the stretch

Is Crane chasing the wrong CY winner? Offer Miami Urquidi, Whitley, Y Diaz, and a ton of cash for Alcantara. Would they consider such an offer?
