I don't think so. They just signed him to that extension 14 months ago and their rotation looks a hell of a lot worse now than it did then because of all the injuries

the Dodgers have enviable starting pitching depth, but between Kershaw's injury and Urias's, well.... awfulness as a human, do you think they break the mold and sign some big/long starting pitching deals?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Very possible. Sonny Gray feels like the perfect Dodgers-style rotation acquisition. He's awesome but the age probably keeps it at three or four years at a higher AAV
But they can't put all the eggs in one basket and if they miss on Gray, then yeah, I think there's more urgency to pursue a Nola, Montgomery or Yamamoto than they would have in a typical offseason

Any chance Marlins will be back in the postseason next year?
Anthony Franco
4:27
We'll see how the offseason goes but I don't find that especially likely right now. Seems like a lateral move at best for the offense with Soler and potentially Bell leaving, still no real solution at shortstop. They lost Alcantara and have less rotation depth to leverage in trade for a hitter of note

What kind of adjustments, trades, free agent signings do the Blue Jays need to make to get to the next level?
Anthony Franco
4:29
I still don't trust the rotation depth there. Manoah's a question mark. Kikuchi was better this year but isn't great. They were pretty fortunate to not have any notable injuries beyond Ryu's rehab from surgery the year before
Adding a starter and a corner outfielder -- pushing Varsho to center -- would be the priorities for me

Do you think the new Marlins POBO will slow walk trades since they "need to get familiar with the organization?"  Still no word on interviews or potential hires.  Times a-waisting!
Anthony Franco
4:31
Probably. I don't think that's an unreasonable course of action though. They have a lot of talented but risky pitchers (both in the majors with Cabrera/Rogers and at the minor league level) and different execs are going to have different opinions on how to order them

Do you think FA contracts could be affected because of TV money uncertainty?
Anthony Franco
4:32
I doubt it slows down the top of the market. It's not like the TV rights issues came completely out of nowhere. They started affecting the bottom line for some teams this year, but it has been trending this way for a while, and the top of the market exploded last winter anyways
4:33
I do think it'll be a relevant consideration for the middle tier guys, especially the handful of players (as we see each offseason) who overplay their hand early and linger until January or February

Hey, Anthony.  Less than 100 days 'til 'pitchers and catchers report'.  (The best phrase in the English language.)  CBS Sports says that the Angels might go after Jorge Solar, Jung Hoo Lee, Jeimer Candelerio, and Teoscar Hernandez.  Do you want to add any names (or take some off) and who do you think will realistically want to sign with the team?
Anthony Franco
4:35
Any of those (or two of the four) seem reasonable. Don't want to give away too many of our team predictions with the list dropping in a couple days but I'm very likely putting Teoscar there. Not where I'll have Lourdes Gurriel but I think he's viable as well

If you were AA ( Braves GM ) how would you address the starting rotation as it seems he has already got started on the bullpen ?
Anthony Franco
4:37
They've got enough short-term payroll room to play for a Wacha or Clevinger type. I'd probably try to pry a Patrick Sandoval or Reese Olson in trade first though
Captain Dunsel
4:37
They don't have much history with Japanese players, but do you see the Phillies spending stupid money to outbid the field for Yamamoto if Nola walks?
Anthony Franco
4:37
Sure. Dombrowski has already said that adding a top-flight starter would be the big priority if they can't get Nola done
4:38
Snell's a little more of the straightforward, Dombrowski-esque move, but no reason not to be involved on Yamamoto if he's mostly agnostic on geography
Real Craig Mish the Dish
4:38
If you were John Mozeliak, how would you address the rotation?
Anthony Franco
4:39
One high-end free agent (Nola ideally), a rebound type like Montas and a trade for someone like Spencer Turnbull or Nick Pivetta

Which prospects will the Oriels give up for pitching? Would they be interested in any of the Astros pitchers not name Verlander and Valdez?
Anthony Franco
4:41
Kyle Stowers, Joey Ortiz, Connor Norby all seem realistic. Could argue for them to sell Samuel Basallo since he clearly doesn't have a path to catching in Baltimore, but they could do that a year from now as well
4:42
On the Astros specifically, maybe something aligns with Hunter Brown? Can't see Houston dealing Javier, Urquidy and France don't have that kind of pull
Josh B
4:42
What chances do you give the Padres trading Juan Soto?
Anthony Franco
4:42
I guess I'll arbitrarily take 35%
4:44
I don't think they should or need to, given the other ways in which they could clear some money (Barlow, Grisham, Kim). But they're not extending him and it's the single move that'd open the most payroll room while recouping immediate MLB help, so it's not completely outlandish

What's one trade that makes too much sense,
Astros fan
4:45
How about giving us a blockbuster trade prediction.
Anthony Franco
4:47
Probably need to kick in a little more from the Rays' side given the extra year of team control but I'm a fan of some kind of Randy Arozarena/Logan Gilbert swap
4:48
Rays need starting pitching, Mariners need offense. Those teams love trading with one another

Big fan of the Braves moves to re-sign Pierce Johnson and Joe Jimenez.  Do you see them trading Grissom + for a #3 pitcher, or do we sign a free agent?
Anthony Franco
4:49
Either is possible but I slightly lean in favor of a Grissom trade
Bill G.

The Pirates need to get a starting pitcher by trade.  Their most likely trade partner would be a rebuilding team in need of controllable MLB players or minor leaguers.  Help me build a trade with A's, Royals, Nationals, Rockies, or maybe the Padres to get that controllable SP.
Anthony Franco
4:50
Haha unfortunately those teams don't have much controllable starting pitching to offer. A's could move Paul Blackburn, who's a fine #4 or 5. Nationals aren't trading MacKenzie Gore. Colorado has nothing. San Diego only has Musgrove and Darvish
4:52
Guess that leaves Brady Singer from the teams you mentioned? Not seeing anyone on the Pittsburgh roster who feels like a great fit in a one-for-one swap there. Could see if the Royals buy Liover Peguero as an everyday second baseman?

How far into the multiple CBT thresholds do you see the Red Sox spending?  I could see them setting in under the 3rd threshold of $277M.
Anthony Franco
4:54
They're projected around $198MM right now, per Cot's. Just under 277 is a pretty significant jump. Something in the 250 range feels a little likelier
