Seems like he ultimately just wanted to be a Yankee and tried to bluff them into getting the '29 option picked up

The cubs are shooting for near the top of the rotation arm and I was wondering if Flaherty would be a better investment  over Fried ? Plus the cubs already have 2 lefties in the rotation  .
Marc
3:21
I know some of the writers picked Max Freid going to the Cubs. I’m wondering if they’re not better set up to trade young position player talent for young Mariner’s pitching. Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
3:23
I'd rather have Fried than Flaherty, even if it costs an extra $40MM or so. The track record is just a lot more consistent. I don't care about the handedness stuff in the rotation. That can change with one injury, and I don't think it matters much anyways if you run two or three straight LHP against a lineup as long as they're good pitchers
3:24
Seattle has continually shot down the idea that they're open to trading one of their starters. They haven't moved a starter for offense despite years of speculation that they would, and they have a farm system with enough high-end talent to land almost any hitter they want who's available on the trade market
Rizzo

If the A's aren't making Miller a starter, why wouldn't they trade him this offseason? He is Super 2 and after the next 2 years, he will be expenseive like Hader in later arb years. Brewers got little value for that trade and the A's aren't going to be competitive the next two seasons. Add his injury history and reliver volatility (Hello David Bednar) and it makes zero sense.
Anthony Franco
3:25
I disagree that the Brewers got little value out of the Hader trade. Robert Gasser's a good prospect and they turned Esteury Ruiz into William Contreras
But that's beside the point. On Miller specifically, I think the A's are just more optimistic about their short-term outlook than you are. I doubt they expect to be a playoff team next season, but it seems like they're shooting to land around .500 with a realistic Wild Card chance in '26
3:27
Not saying you're wrong. I'd probably give more consideration to moving Miller than they are for the reasons you mentioned. But I also would've more seriously listened on Brent Rooker at the deadline and this offseason, which they're not doing either. If they really didn't think they had a shot to contend before 2027, they'd trade Rooker too

Is age the reason you guys have Hernandez lower than Santander? I think I’d prefer Hernandez, even if they get the same price and years. Is that a crazy take?
Anthony Franco
3:29
Yeah it's just age. I'm with you that Teoscar's a better player and thinks it's totally fair to prefer him even if they end up at the same price. You're just getting two additional prime years with Santander so it's easier to see him getting four or even five years than it is with Teoscar, who's very likely capped at three since he's already 32

Would Kim to Philly make sense? Once he his healthy, he could either replace anyone who is struggling in the infield (most likely Bohm or Stott), kick Turner to the outfield with his defense seemingly on the decline last season (which would also help solve the lack of quality outfield options), or serve in a 2019 style DJ Lemahieu role where he plays every day but at different positions. The last option would also allow him to reenter the market with reestablished value and proven positional flexibility
Anthony Franco
3:30
Assuming you mean Ha-Seong Kim and not KBO infielder Hyeseong Kim, he already has proven positional flexibility since he bounced around with the Padres. I could see the fit if the Phillies traded Bohm or Stott for pitching/outfield help
If the Phils keep everyone they already have, Kim's just going to prefer going to a team that can promise him everyday ABs

Thanks for the chats! Always appreciated. I see the Cardinals have a new media deal in place. Do you have any terms? I haven't been able to find that information.
Anthony Franco
3:31
Post-Dispatch reported they're taking a 23% revenue cut next year
Joey

If the yankees resign Soto, do you see them going cheap at either 2B or 1B? Considering Hal said this year's payroll levels were unsustainable, would it be asking too much to resign Gleyber, Soto, and get Walker?
Anthony Franco
3:34
Probably not getting all three but I think Soto and one of Walker or Gleyber is realistic
Braig Creslow
3:35
Do you buy the Breslow saying he won't trade Casas? Would be a great trade chip for top-tier SP, and the defense could upgrade by signing Bregman or trading for Arenado. The IF D won't get better with the current 2 guys at the corners
Anthony Franco
3:36
I do, yeah. I wouldn't trade Casas either because I think there's very much another gear that he's about to hit offensively

in a recent chat on MLBTR it was mentioned that the Braves were probably not clearing payroll to make a  big move, but due to budget constraints, especially now that they need to find a replacement for Joe Jimenez.  When do you expect them to try to reset the CBT?  2026?  Did they miss the opportunity to do it this season "LA Angels style" and instead chose to take on Soler's money?
Anthony Franco
3:38
They're already projected around $136MM in '26 CBT obligations at Roster Resource, not including the Sale/Albies options. Hard for me to see a reset happening before 2027
3:39
At that point, Sale, Bummer and Jiménez also come off after Raisel and Ozuna hit FA next winter
3:40
They were too far above to reset the tax number this summer and the Soler trade helped them make the playoffs. Wouldn't call that a missed opportunity

If Martinez accepts the QO, do you think the Reds will still look to sign another innings eater backend starter like Quintana or Gibson?  Martinez was so valuable to them last year because of his versatility.  With the amount of young starters the Reds have and with the history of them not being able to go for a whole season, I think they will sign another starter and use Martinez the same way as last year.  Unless they bring Junis back, then he could fill that role.
Anthony Franco
3:42
Probably not. Martinez back at $21M would put them around last year's spending level and they need to do something about the offense. The TV money is still enough of a question that I'm skeptical ownership is about to push payroll up by 40%
3:43
It's why I didn't expect them to make the QO to Martinez even acknowledging how pivotal he was for them. Maybe the QO will buy some time and they can work out a three-year deal that lowers next year's salary to the $11-13MM range. Not sure if he'd have interest in that when he already has the ability to take 21 upfront for one year
Akira Kurosawa
3:44
This is a silly question that probably no one can answer, but it crossed my mind yesterday. Do you think Japanese players are more prone to sign with west coast clubs because they're six hours closer to Japan?
Anthony Franco
3:45
Not silly at all, I think this is absolutely a factor for a lot of players. A lot of West Coast cities also just have larger Asian communities that can be comforting to players coming over from NPB or the KBO
3:46
Some guys won't care. Shogo Akiyama signed with the Reds, for instance, but it's not a coincidence that a lot of the high-profile signees out of Japan and Korea (i.e. Ohtani, Yamamoto, Kim, Jung Hoo Lee) end up on the west coast
Patrick Corbin
3:46
Will I get an MLB deal or a minors deal? If your list had been Top 150 Free Agents, would I have made it?
Anthony Franco
3:47
Haha yeah, I think he'd have made a top 150. Minor league deal for me with like a $2-3MM base salary
If he cracks the MLB roster, that is
JorgeGeorge
3:47
Can a player talk to other teams while he is deciding on his QO?  Or can his agent?  Thanks!
Anthony Franco
3:47
Yep. They've got 15 days to explore the market
3:48
Tyler Anderson and Will Smith (the reliever) have signed with other while still in the initial QO acceptance window
Ha seong
3:48
You guys are the only place I saw predict a 1 year deal for HS Kim. You guys think the shoulder will prevent him from returning as a gold glove SS?
Anthony Franco
3:49
We went back and forth on two. Steve Adams was pretty confident he'd get two with an opt-out but we overruled him
3:50
There's at least enough uncertainty coming off a labrum repair that I don't think he's getting four or five years. I don't know what the odds are that his arm strength doesn't come all the way back, but it's not zero. If he loses a little zip and ends up fitting better at second base than on the left side of the infield, he's a pretty limited player
