NYY fan since '67. Yet I still get PO'd at cohorts who rant about Cashman for not giving the world for Soto.  He's got only a year.  With that agent, whoever gets him now might just have a rental, yes?  btw, thanks for these chats!!
Anthony Franco
4:18
Yeah, anyone in the mix for Soto has to operate on the assumption that he's going to free agency. There's some price you could pay where he wouldn't, of course -- I'm sure he'd take a $750MM extension offer to use a deliberately outlandish example -- but rejecting $440MM suggests that he's not interested in bypassing free agency for any number that has much precedent
4:20
That said, having Juan Soto on your team for one year (and then getting a mid-round pick back if you don't re-sign him) makes you a hell of a lot better in 2024. So while I agree that they shouldn't trade Dominguez, Pereira and Thorpe or something, it's not like Soto has no value

Bleacher Report says Arizona could be a dark horse for Ohtani. Any validity to that? Hazen does like to keep things close to the chest and Ohtani might be encouraged by the youth on the roster. Or is this just more Bleacher Report clickbait?
Anthony Franco
4:20
I cannot see that happening

The Cards would be foolish to not try and get another top starter via trade now rather than wait until they need one next year , correct? They have plenty of trade pieces to get a starter or 2 from the Mariners, like Hancock and Woo and add them to the pen for the year and rotation in '25.
Anthony Franco
4:21
Seattle isn't going to trade both those guys, but I agree with the general premise that the Cards should still be trying to trade a hitter for a controllable starter
4:23
The current rotation is still pretty weak and the one-year deals for Lynn and Gibby mean they're still pretty light on post-'24 rotation options. Would be nice to get someone in there who has had more MLB success than Zack Thompson or Matt Liberatore have had

By the end of the winter meetings, who will be signed? Ohtani, Yamamoto, Lee, Bellinger, Snell, Cease, or what is your guess?! Thank you!
Anthony Franco
4:24
Ohtani, Monty, E-Rod among the free agents. Could see Glasnow and Soto traded, I'll take Ken Rosenthal's word that the Sox are waiting to move Cease until free agency goes
Josh
4:24
Can the O’s get an impact starter without trading Mayo and Basallo?  Would Westberg, Cowser and Povich be enough for Cease?
Anthony Franco
4:25
I'd take that if I were Chicago but I'm also probably a little higher on Westburg than consensus
Agnes

Name a few players who had a down 2023 season but are candidates to bounce back this season? Not as spectacularly as Belli but in that vein. Thanks!
Anthony Franco
4:27
Vlad Jr., Jake Cronenworth, Tyler Stephenson should all have better years
4:28
Wouldn't consider Masataka Yoshida a "bounce back" candidate since he was a rookie, but I think there's another level for him in his second MLB season too
Ryan

It sounds like the Jays are really in on Ohtani. If you sign Ohtani you are going for it big time. That leads me to another what if. Could the Jays be a team Houston sends Alex Bregman to? A deal like Manoah, Tiedman and Orelvis Martinez for Bregman.
Kevin

hi Anthony, your thoughts on the Shohei rumors.
Anthony Franco
4:30
Everything Passan said on Ohtani this morning makes sense. I guess I'm a little surprised the Jays have made it this far in the process given the general perception that he might want to stay on the West Coast
But they're good, have a lot of short-term payroll room, and Toronto's a cool city. So if geography isn't that big a factor, it's not too difficult to sell
4:31
I think Ryan's proposal is too much for the Jays to give up for one season of Bregman
Alex Anthopulos

Given the high cost of starting pitching, should I just add to the back end of my starting rotation and wait to see what I have in Elder, Lopez, Ynoa, and Smith-Shaver.  There is always the in-season trade deadline!
Anthony Franco
4:33
I'd still be pretty aggressive on Cease or E-Rod if I were the Braves. The deadline gives you a fallback option but it's a tough division and you don't want to give away too many games early in the season because the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation are bleeding runs
4:34
Also runs the risk of putting a lot of stress on the bullpen early on, which could have some trickle-down effects when you need them at their best late in the year

Winter meetings start monday right?
Anthony Franco
4:34
Technically Sunday afternoon but probably won't get anything notable happening until Monday
Everyone usually takes the first night to get settled in

The M's have a bunch of young, controllable starters and one aging expensive one. Any chance the M's would swap Castillio for Ozuna and AJSS or  Kirby and Peete for AJSS and Grissom?
Anthony Franco
4:35
No, I don't see any way the Mariners trade Kirby or Castillo

Arizona sends Druw Jones to Texas for Owen White in a straight 1-for-1. Who says no and why?
Anthony Franco
4:36
Can't see the D-Backs doing this after one full pro season for Jones

Will I be a Cub at spring training?
Anthony Franco
4:37
I'd take the field over any specific team on Hader but I think the Cubs are as good a pick as any

Brandon Williamson and Rece Hinds for Glasnow. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
4:37
Rays should do better

4:37
Royals beat writer Anne Rogers wrote today that the team is "looking for not only a pitcher who can give them innings, but also a No. 1 or No. 2 who can help solidify the rotation." Realistically, is there any #1 or #2 the Royals could get?
Anthony Franco
4:38
Would you consider Eduardo Rodriguez a #2? Royals have enough short-term payroll space to pull something like that off
4:40
Debatable whether they should spend at that level coming off a 106-loss season, but they could do it and they're eventually going to reach a point where they try to jumpstart the rebuild since it has completely stalled out
Thank you for the chat!

If the Yanks wanted Cease and Robert, and put Dominguez and Peraza on the table, how far apart are the two sides?
