Yeah I'd skew toward Flaherty + a short-term first baseman over paying Burnes what I expect he'll make at this point
3:29
That's true of most teams, not just SF. I'd rather meet the Burnes ask if I were the Orioles or Red Sox though
3:30
Any of the rebound fliers you mentioned are viable, sure. Doubt Posey operates the same way on SP as Farhan did, but the Giants have a rotation spot to offer and a decent enough roster where a player can talk themselves into them competing
Gator
3:31
Does Rhett Lowder make the Reds rotation, or does Singer knock him out?  Seems like he’s proven he belongs with the big club (although I’m not anticipating a sub 2 era for him this year).
Anthony Franco
3:32
Guess it depends on if the Pivetta chatter turns into a deal. As things stand, I'd project him in the rotation behind Greene, Singer, Abbott and Lodolo with Martinez opening the year in the 'pen
There'll be enough starts to go around as guys get hurt in either case

have not heard anything about Profar what’s going on with him? If he were to come back to San Diego, what a one year $12 million contract work.?
Anthony Franco
3:33
I think that's way below his market value, so he'd need to really want to go back to San Diego to make that happen. Michael Conforto just got $17MM coming off a significantly worse season, for example
3:34
I think Profar should get three years and over $40MM if he were simply looking to max out. Certainly possible he takes less to stay in SD since he seems to love it there, but I'd be really surprised if he's willing to give that much of a discount
3:35
Broadly speaking, the market's been pretty quiet for mid-level hitters. The top of the hitting class has come off the board and starting pitching is moving really quickly. The good but not great hitters have lingered for the most part (except for catchers)

3:35
I really don’t get the Conforto signing by the Dodgers, the money should’ve gone to Teo. I also think having betts play shortstop and Lux playing second base does not make for a very good defensive infield. Throw in Muncy and the three should keep Freddie Freeman really busy with throws in the dirt..  offensive wise it does not look as good as it was last year thoughts?  Anything else up their sleeve?
Anthony Franco
3:36
Yeah I'm not a huge fan of that one either. Conforto hit pretty well down the stretch but we've seen him do this for years now and the overall production usually ends up around average
3:38
Teo's at a different level financially. He probably beats the Conforto AAV on a three-year deal, and the Dodgers might not have wanted to go to that length with Andy Pages and Dalton Rushing on the doorstep. With the price it took on Conforto, though, wouldn't have been eager to jump the market on that one
3:39
Obviously they'll be in on Sasaki. Could make one more move in the 'pen. I imagine they'll keep in touch with Hernández until he signs, but it's a tough fit now. They should leave a path to ABs for Pages
Teams on the Cusp
3:40
What teams that currently don’t look great will be the next “surprise” contenders? The ‘24 Royals or ‘23 Diamondbacks? Do any have the staying power those two teams lacked?
Anthony Franco
3:41
Wouldn't say those teams lacked staying power. We'll see how things go with K.C. The D-Backs are still good. They were a game away from making the playoffs and should be back in  the mix next season
3:42
I don't have a good answer to your actual question. Everyone aside from the Rockies, Marlins and White Sox has some hope of contending, so there's nothing that'd be completely out of nowhere
3:43
I'm still intrigued by the Reds, but they're not starting from as low a point as the teams you mentioned. I assume the A's will be alright but probably not playoff caliber
Nate
3:43
There has been a lot of smoke of Bellinger to the Yanks. But doesn’t Bellinger to the Phils for Bohm just make a ton of sense for both sides in the wake of the Tucker trade?
Mel
3:44
Why are teams so down on Bohm? Will the Phils make any deals?
Anthony Franco
3:45
I don't think the Phils would swap Bohm and Bellinger. Not sure that teams are down on Bohm, per se, but if the Phillies are floating him for a controllable mid-rotation or better starter, they're not going to get anyone to bite on that
3:46
Bohm's a good player but he's getting somewhat expensive. His offense is solid but platoon-dependent. It's just not a profile that teams are going to give up controllable starting pitching for, especially with how expensive mediocre rotation help has become in FA
Rivera Jr
3:46
Using the Williams trade as a comp. What could the Guards expect to get back if they trade Clase? He's got 4x as much control and is  better than Williams
Anthony Franco
3:47
For those reasons, I don't think the Williams trade is a comp for Clase
We've tried to come up with a viable Clase trade comp dating back to last deadline and haven't found one. The closest I can really think of is the Edwin Díaz trade, but that was weird because Seattle offloaded most of the Canó deal with it
3:48
I do think Clase would multiple Top 100 prospects if Cleveland moved him. Cheaply signed forever, utterly dominant. The playoffs sucked, but there's a multi-year track record of him as a top three reliever
Burgher Time
3:49
Thoughts on the Bucs trading IKF and signing Jorge Polonco for SS? What would he cost on a 2yr deal?
Anthony Franco
3:50
Polanco hasn't played shortstop in four years and is coming off knee surgery. I do not think that would go well
3:51
He's probably better than Nick Gonzales, but I doubt it's enough of an upgrade for the Pirates to add him. One-year deal guy for me, something like $8-10MM

Best RF available for the Pirates is…

3:52
While we're on the former Twins rebound topic, Kepler?
Angels Comments
3:52
I agree with your earlier comments about them but think SP and the BP are still a bigger need than their IF.  Does a reunion with Carlos Estevez or a Jeff Hoffman make sense?  And perhaps Turnbull? (Trade Silseth or Aldegheri (release Suarez) for whatever and make room)
Anthony Franco
3:54
Yeah I'd like either of those, Hoffman especially. Could give him a look as starter too. Don't need to trade Silseth or Aldegheri, just start them in Salt Lake
3:55
Generally speaking, I think they should be willing to chase upside plays like Hoffman. They're going to be long shots either way, but if you're trying to contend in spite of it, better to take swings on players who have broader ranges of outcomes. Adding another boring innings like Anderson and Hendricks isn't raising the ceiling of the roster in the way they need if they're going to have any shot of competing

3:56
The Cubs' leverage in trading an OF is now...how close to zero?
Anthony Franco
3:56
They clearly need to move somebody but they weren't hiding the idea that they wanted to find a taker for Bellinger before either
Willy and chappy
3:57
Are we the best left side in baseball?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Reasonable case for it, definitely up there. I think I'd take Gunnar and Westburg
4:00
Could argue for Lindor and Vientos or literally anyone who gets to play next to José Ramírez/Bobby Witt Jr. Reds could end up near the top if anyone takes a step forward at third base. Chapman/Adames probably has the highest-floor of any left side duo though, even if there are a few that I think have higher ceilings
4:01
Mookie/Muncy would be up there too
