Could the Yankees package IKF with Hicks to unload him or would it require more?
Anthony Franco
3:24
No, IKF barely has any trade value himself
3:25
Someone would take him and give up a marginal return but he's not so appealing you're taking $30MM of Aaron Hicks money

Could Toronto use Addison Barger as trade bait for clubs who miss out on the big 4 SS?
Anthony Franco
3:26
Eh he has eight games above Double-A. He's a good prospect who'd definitely have trade appeal, but I don't think the Twins, Braves or Red Sox are going into the season feeling they've fixed shortstop by trading for Barger

I've got a theory on the Cubs that seems to make everything they're doing fit together: they are still in rebuild mode regardless of the PR spin. Their plan is compete in 2024 / 2025.  Almost all of their signings (and lack of extensions) make sense in order to keep doing mid-season trade for more prospects.  The Stroman contract almost guarantees he'll be flipped this summer.  Bellinger is the same.  Taillon and Suzuki given them a shred of credibility / stability. Does that seem right?
Anthony Franco
3:27
I don't have an issue with the free agent deals so much as the lack of urgency on the trade market though. If that's the plan, why not move Contreras last summer or market Happ with any more urgency this offseason?

Hey Anthony, hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season.  Have you heard anything that might suggest that Trevor Bauer isn't going to serve his 2 years?  Seems like the Dodgers are on hold until that is known.
Anthony Franco
3:28
Thanks Ron, you as well!
I have no insight into the Bauer appeal likelihood. Don't think anyone can until it happens
Thank you for the chat!
3:28
Where do you think Gary Sanchez ends up? Maybe a team like ARI if they don't swing a trade?
Anthony Franco
3:29
I'd rather just roll with Carson Kelly. Detroit makes some sense, kind of intrigued by the idea of him as a catcher/DH hybrid in Colorado if they decide to do anything

Why do you think free agent contracts are so inflated this year?  I seriously think it's because of Cohen
Anthony Franco
3:30
Cohen's part of it but the Padres didn't give Bogaerts $280MM just to keep him from the Mets
3:31
Feels like a broadly favorable market because we're guaranteed some labor stability for a couple years and now past the pandemic revenue dip. Pair that with the longer terms appealing to the CBT payors because the luxury tax setup incentivizes lower annual salaries
Question
3:31
With the Angels going up for sale and Mike Trout having so much money, could he conceivably become a part owner?
Anthony Franco
3:32
Ha I don't think that's permissible for an active player

3:32
Do the Yankees have to give up two draft picks and one million in international money for signing Judge and the same for Rodon?
Anthony Franco
3:32
Only for Rodón
3:33
They don't directly forfeit any draft picks for Judge, since he was their free agent. They do relinquish the right to the post-fourth round pick they'd have gotten as compensation if Judge went else
Giants need a CF
3:33
Is Luciano enough of a headliner for Pirates in reynolds trade?
Anthony Franco
3:34
Yeah I think that's the kind of starting point they'd get

Are we living in the golden era of free agency? We get Ohtani and Soto in the next 2 offseasons but then there will be a big dropoff for a few years. (Machado another potential name)
Anthony Franco
3:35
Devers next year too if the Red Sox don't extend him. I haven't looked into the three-plus year service guys to have an opinion on the 2025-26 market but I'm generally confident guys will emerge
No one would've been interested in Carlos Rodón when he was signing 1/$3MM with the White Sox two years ago

3:36
How bad does the Mookie Trade look now? Eeeesh.
Anthony Franco
3:36
Yeah definitely expected better, particularly from Verdugo. Thought he'd be a star as opposed to a generic corner outfielder
3:37
I would still rather have Verdugo than the pick they'd have gotten for letting Mookie walk after they made the decision they weren't extending him. But the chance to compete in 2020 plus the pick probably turned out more valuable than the return, and that's before considering whether they should've just more earnestly committed to extending him
3:38
Mookie's deal looks pretty solid relative to a lot of this offseason's biggest contracts

3:38
How much longer will MLB allow Oakland to try and workout a final stadium deal before they give permission for a move to Las Vegas?
Anthony Franco
3:39
Manfred recently said they need something decided by January 15, 2024
Drew
3:39
How much do you lean into the idea that a GM should build a club to fit their home ballpark?
Anthony Franco
3:40
I think it's a slight consideration, particularly at the extremes, but not something I'd place a ton of stock in. Should the Royals or Marlins look for rangier outfield defenders in an ideal world? Probably, but that doesn't mean I'd just cross off bat-first sluggers if the market fell in a way those guys were strong value
Drew
3:41
If you could only keep one on the Cardinals, who do you go with ... Gorman or Donovan?
Anthony Franco
3:41
Donovan
I like Gorman more in a vacuum, I think, but Donovan's higher-floor with less upside. With where the Cardinals are in a competitive window, that stability's valuable
3:42
If I were the A's building Murphy trade packages, think I'd have rather had Gorman
(They seemed to disagree)

Well, that sucked. Has there been anyone who has given a positive take on Oakland's return in the Sean Murphy trade?
