I imagine the Dodgers would prefer the shorter-term, higher-AAV bet on Verlander than going five or six years on Rodón
Andrew
3:23
Thoughts on the Padres landing Senga, Bogaerts, or Turner?
Anthony Franco
3:24
Senga has a huge market but San Diego's as strong a fit any team, sure. I still find it hard to see them actually landing one of the top four shortstops. They're already near luxury tax territory for what'd be a third straight season -- with peak repeat payor penalties -- and other teams have a much clearer vacancy at shortstop

3:24
Anthony...The Angels have made some decent moves so far, but still need additional upgrades at middle infield and especially the bullpen. What realistic moves could you see Moreno allowing Minasian to make?
Anthony Franco
3:25
Trade for Rosario or one of the Rays extra infielders like Taylor Walls. Sign Elvis Andrus. Don't expect them to get one of the top shortstops, as mentioned
Matt
3:25
I was very surprised to see Zach Eflin to the Rays. For a team with a small budget, paying him what they are as a mid rotation starter seems odd. Do you think they work their magic with him? I’d love to hear your thoughts
Anthony Franco
3:27
We were also taken aback by it a little bit, although my aversion to it is more the injury history with his knee. From an age and talent perspective, Eflin would've had a strong case for four years if he didn't have the chronic health issues. There's been a lot of "well it's the Rays so they'll make him good" responses to that deal, and I don't buy him as a reclamation project. He's already good
3:28
Just seems like they're willing to gamble on him staying healthy, which is one I wouldn't have advocated for if I were them. That's less a question about coaching as it is some combination of medical evaluation and luck
Cody bellinger
3:29
Where will I go. If he wants to sign a one year contract could the Dodgers bring him back at a lower cost with incentives
Brian cashman
3:29
Good afternoon Anthony where do you think Cody bellinger signs
Anthony Franco
3:30
I probably answered this last week with a different team but I'll put him on the Cubs now, I don't know. Could see the Dodgers poking around on a cheaper deal, sure
Timbo
3:30
If the Twins miss out on Correa, could you see them getting in the mix on Verlander or deGrom with another short term, high AAV contract?
Anthony Franco
3:31
Never say never but that's a huge investment in an aging pitcher that feels beyond their comfort zone ultimately. It's easier to do $35.1MM on Correa when he's a shortstop who you kind of expect to opt out after one season than it is to go over $40MM on a pitcher in his mid-late 30's
Rangers13
3:31
Could Quantrill, Lorenzen, Houser, Lauer, or Gonsolin be had with out sending Jung, Carter, or Lieter the other way?
Anthony Franco
3:32
Lorenzen's a free agent. They can get him for almost nothing
3:33
You could theoretically build a trade package for any of the guys you mentioned without dealing from the top of the farm. I doubt Gonsolin or Quantrill actually get dealt this offseason. The Milwaukee pitchers mentioned are more plausible
Rangers13
3:33
At this point is Flaherty in St. Louis still considered to be an ace or is he below the level of Jon Gray and Martin Perez?
Anthony Franco
3:34
Higher upside than Gray and Pérez but the injury risk is through the roof. I'd take the safety of the Texas guys over him if I were building a roster for 2023, even if I think Flaherty's the likeliest of that trio to end up on a Cy Young ballot

Looking at outside the box trades for the Jays for a CF.  Two come to mind: a trade with the Padres for Trent Grisham if they intend for Tatis to take over CF.  That trade would most likely cost the Jays a player of Kirks caliber.  The other is with AZ for Corbin Carroll for Moreno.  Both of those would like have additional pieces but those would be the headliners.  Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
3:34
Carroll's not moving. The D-Backs have pretty much declared him off limits
3:37
Grisham is more viable and I don't think it'd cost the Jays a Kirk-type player. He's coming off an atrocious offensive season and while his defense and past production at the plate means he still has decent trade value, I don't consider at the level you suggest. If the Jays tried to build a package around Tiedemann or Zulueta, I could see that being workable

Thanks for the chat! Cardinal fan here...would O'Neill be a good start for a catcher? Put in a lower level (or two) prospects?
Anthony Franco
3:37
For Danny Jansen maybe. Not for Sean Murphy or one of the Jays younger catchers

Eve Rosenbaum said during an interview “We are definitely going to do something. Look at some bigger fish”. Of course that doesn’t equate to the Orioles signing a top level FA, but this is the first public comment I’ve heard from the Elias regime of this sort. Whether trade or FA, is this worth getting excited about or should we just expect the Taillon/Bell tier of talent?
Anthony Franco
3:39
I'd bet against them going nine figures on a free agent, but pairing a free agent of the Bell/Taillon tier with a trade for a mid-rotation pitcher (Trevor Rogers on the high end/José Urquidy on the lower end) feels viable and would be an exciting offseason in my view
Giantsphan
3:39
Hey Anthony, thanks for the chat!  If the Giants land Judge (which I have mixed feelings about) do you think they’ll still pursue 1 of 4 of the top SSs?  What about their need for a true CFer?  Top of the rotation arm?  A couple solid RPs?  The Giants have a lot of holes, thus I wonder what happens when/if they land the BIGGEST FISH of the offseason??  Thank you
Anthony Franco
3:40
Yeah I wouldn't project the same team to get Judge and one of the top shortstops. Could the Giants pair Judge and Dansby? It's financially viable, but it probably requires neglecting the other holes on the roster that you mentioned
3:41
I think it's likelier they get Judge or a top shortstop while then attacking the middle of the market for CF and bullpen help, maybe a catching upgrade
Brandon nimmo
3:41
How many more years does he have left as a center fielder?
Anthony Franco
3:42
Health permitting, three seems reasonable
3:43
George Springer has held his own there through age-32. Could probably handle it for one more season but the Jays are open to kicking him to a corner for a defensive upgrade and in hopes of keeping him healthier. Nimmo feels like a similar player in that respect
Steve
3:43
Max Kepler to who and for what? Is he even worth anything?
Anthony Franco
3:44
Jays, Marlins, Red Sox, Brewers all make sense. He still has trade value but it's not immense, think you're talking about a back-of-the-rotation starter and/or middle innings help
Cubbie
3:44
Do you see Cubs trading say Madrigal, Wisdom, Keegan Thompson etc to fill spots that need to be filled/majorly improved upon?
Anthony Franco
3:45
None of the guys you mentioned are bringing back major improvements in trade. They're all fine, would have some appeal on the trade market. But none of those guys is getting you a solid everyday center fielder or a mid-rotation starter

3:45
What does DeGrom have to do to get in the hall of fame?
Anthony Franco
3:46
I think another Cy Young gets him in. Three pretty much does it, assuming you're not tied to steroids. If he doesn't win another one, probably needs 2-3 more seasons of solid production over 120+ innings
Dano
3:46
Where does Keston Hiura fit in the Brewers plans?  Do they give him a serious chance at the DH job since his glove is pretty bad no matter where he plays.
Anthony Franco
3:48
Feels like he's down to his last shot there. The power's real and the overall offensive numbers were fine this year, but he can't strike out 40% of the time and expect to hold an everyday job

With rumors circulating boagarts severed ties with red Sox is it likely they'll resign him
