I don't buy the idea they've completely severed ties but also have never found it especially likely they'd bring him back considering what they offered in Spring Training
Thor
3:49
Any Thor news? Heard he was working hard at driveline and another facility working things out. Places he could land and contract?
Anthony Franco
3:50
Yeah Passan reported he went to Driveline to try to build some of his pre-surgery velocity back. He's right on the 3/4 year border for me, guess I'd put him at four with how strong the rotation market looks like it'll be
3:51
Around $13MM annually. Cubs, Jays, Orioles, Giants, Tigers all make sense
Joey
3:51
Why is pitching so incredibly expensive right now? $40 mil for eflin??? $10 mil for boyd?? On that note, second question, should the Yankees have given taillon the QO? Would he have taken it? He looks poised to get much more
Anthony Franco
3:52
I was surprised the Yankees didn't QO Taillon. I think he would've taken it but agree that 1/19.65 is solid value anyways
Eflin
3:52
Did the rays backload his deal so that they can trade him later? Is he ever going to be worth 18 mil a year?
Anthony Franco
3:53
No I don't see why backloading his deal would even make him more appealing as a trade asset. He'd be more valuable if they frontloaded it and tried to market him at 2/22 next winter
They just have a ton of long-term payroll space, particularly after Glasnow comes off the books post-2024
Noah S.
3:53
Any chance NY would take me back?
Anthony Franco
3:54
Sure, I could see the Mets checking in there. Makes sense as their second-best rotation add of the winter, especially if Bassitt walks
Brian cashman
3:54
Where do you think judge signs
Anthony Franco
3:54
Yankees
Ralpho
3:54
How will the advent of the pitch clock and shift restrictions affect a typical team's personnel decisions in the off season?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Don't think pitch clock does anything to affect roster construction. Shift ban should marginally improve the value for guys who pull the ball a lot and have had really low batting averages on balls in play
Ben Cherington pointed to this as a reason the Pirates went after Carlos Santana, as one example

What do the Jays do to shore up the rotation? Trade for a big star (Bieber,Burnes), trade for a lower end guy, sigh a top SP, or sign a lower SP and hope Kikuchi/Berrios bounce back?
Anthony Franco
3:56
I think they'll a mid-tier starting pitcher. Someone like Taillon or Taijuan Walker, while trying to retain Ross Stripling
3:57
Kind of have to count on Berríos to bounce back. Kikuchi should be in the season-opening bullpen, he's not a good starting pitcher
GM P.M.

I appreciate the whole MLBTR staff hosting these chat events! Since you said angels are sticking with shorter term deals most likely, where do you think they invest the rest of their resources? Most pressing need remaining ?
Anthony Franco
3:57
Bullpen and middle infield are the target areas but it's more so that I expect them to continue to address everything with shorter-term deals
3:59
Renfroe and Urshela are good players who were making sizable but not untenable one-year salaries. Anderson got three years but it's not like $13MM annually is incredibly tough to take on. That kind of player seems to be what they're after as they strike a balance between getting better without locking themselves into anything that'd impact their sale process
Schenectady Blue Jays

Could you rank the following young starters in terms of who will end up as #1 or #2 starters, and who will end up as 3,4, and 5 starters?
Please rank: Brayan Bello, Luis Garcia, Josh Winder, Jose Suarez, Baily Ober, Brady Singer.
Anthony Franco
4:00
I don't consider any of them future 1/2 starters. Garcia/Singer I like as mid-rotation guys. Bello's next, followed by Suarez, Ober and Winder
Chriss

Any chance the braves make a trade for Bryan Reynolds? Do they have the pieces to make that kind of trade?
Anthony Franco
4:00
Pirates have so consistently balked at trading Reynolds I don't see them moving him
4:01
Could Atlanta build something that matches on value? Sure. Vaughn Grissom and William Contreras would be a hell of a starting point, for instance. But Pittsburgh's ask just seems so astronomical because they're not facing any pressing motivation to move him that I think he stays put
Seattle Steelheads

Commentators (as well as the Mariners) seem to think that Jarred Kelenic is a crap shoot. But what about Spencer Torkelson, who has also had a putrid start to his career? Are Tork's underlying stats more positive? (As an M's fan, it's torture to watch Kelenic at the plate because he's so physically uptight and tense. Not an ounce of joy in him, unlike Julio.)
Anthony Franco
4:03
I'm not at the point where I'd write off either but have a little more optimism in Torkelson. Kelenic has had two separate cracks against MLB pitching and failed both times, Tork's only had one season. And Torkelson's swing-and-miss issues haven't been as pronounced as Kelenic's have
4:04
It's fair to say they've both been disappointing so far, and their stocks are each well down from where they once were. But Torkelson righting the ship seems likelier than Kelenic doing so

I don't think the Mets should be looking at Verlander OR deGrom.  I can't justify the team committing 40 million dollars + annually to either player.  I think the Mets targets should instead be Rodon and Senga, and I believe the Mets should pay them whatever it takes to bring them to NY.  I also believe the Mets should take a long look at their farm system and do what they can to pry Glasnow from Tampa Bay, should he become available.  Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
4:06
Rays aren't going to trade Glasnow this closely after signing him to an extension. To your point about investing in Rodón and Senga instead of JV or deGrom, sure, you can make a totally reasonable argument for that. The longer-term downside is greater because they'll require longer commitments, and Senga comes with added risk as a player with zero performance track record
But the annual salaries are going to be markedly lower as a result, and they have to address the bullpen and figure out center field
Nomahhhh
4:07
If the Astros and Verlander are truly far apart, where do you think he goes?
Anthony Franco
4:07
I picked Philly at the start but guess I'll go with the Dodgers now given the reports the Phils are pushing hard at a shortstop
Back to Back

Michael Conforto seems like such a good buy low fit for the Astros.  What would the cost of him be?  2 year $30M with a player option after year 1 get it done?
Anthony Franco
4:08
I know Boras is pushing the two years with an opt-out hard, but I still like Conforto at a straight one-year deal ultimately
Just don't see how you guarantee $30MM to a player who missed all of last season due to shoulder surgery and wasn't all that good in 2021. I'd like it a lot more at 1/12-14
