Guards Fan

Does the Guardians offseason so far look better given what Kansas City, Detroit and Minnesota have done?
Anthony Franco
4:06
Wouldn't say that so much as I've just generally liked their offseason. They did well to get out from the Giménez contract. The downgrade from Naylor to Santana should be pretty minor, and they picked up another controllable starter in that deal
4:07
I'm not a huge fan of Cecconi or Ortiz individually, but they've done well to stockpile controllable starting pitching (which is probably the toughest demographic to acquire) while clearing long-term payroll space and moving guys they can realistically replace without huge downgrades

Thoughts on where Brendan Rodgers will end up?

Feels like a White Sox reclamation flier. Pittsburgh could work too

What would it cost the Astros to sign Alex Verdugo to play RF? Would re-signing Heyward make more sense? He was pretty serviceable down the stretch last season.

Would guess one year around $7MM on Verdugo. I'd rather bring back Heyward but tough to be super enthused about either one

Seems rather unlike the Brewers to sign zero free agents to a major-league contract thus far. I know they traded for Cortes and Durbin, but surprised they haven't dished out any money. What are your thoughts?
Anthony Franco

Aside from Adames, who they were never going to retain, they didn't have many free agent losses. Rotation and one infield spot were the big issues and the Williams trade presented an opportunity to address both
4:15
Could still use an infielder and a swingman, so I expect they'll make two or three MLB free agent pickups by the end of the offseason, but those are areas where they can wait on the market because they don't move quickly
A Matter of Timing
4:16
I see that as was widely expected Andrew McCutchen resigned with Pittsburgh and had a question.  Is there a set rule on how long a team has to make the signing official and add the player to the 40 man roster.  It would seem to me to beneficial to an MLB team  particularly one like the Pirates  who would want open roster spots for Rule 5 or waver pick up etc to wait as long as possible
Anthony Franco
4:17
No rule. Feels like the Dodgers are taking this approach with Kershaw
4:18
I don't think it's a huge advantage or anything. If the 40-man is full, you're going to need to make a DFA or trade at some point. The only time it really helps you preserve depth is if you wait until the start of Spring Training and have a player who can go directly onto the 60-day injured list
4:19
Which we do see teams take advantage of. There are a lot of times where a deal is agreed upon by like February 12 but not made official for a few days so the IL opens back up

thanks for putting out the list of 2025-26 free agents.  Who do you see as the top tier?
Anthony Franco
4:21
Vlad/Tucker leading the way. Gallen/Cease at the top of the next tier down, chance for Michael King to put himself in there. Bichette has a shot to play himself towards the border of Tiers 1 and 2
Tigers
4:22
which is more likely - winning the AL Central or a 500 season and missing the playoffs?
Anthony Franco
4:22
I think either is a legitimate possibility but the latter is slightly more likely
4:24
I'm not down on them or anything, but the ALC has four teams that feel like they've got somewhere between a 15% and 35% chance to win the division. I'd take the field over any individual team and think there's like a 40-50% chance that the Tigers end up close to .500. One injury to Skubal thins them out very quickly
4:25
Alright, I've gotta wrap things here and move to the main site

Thanks for all the questions! Sorry if I didn't get to yours. As always, feel free to throw anything at me on X @affranco10
