Hey everyone, hope you're having a good week!
4:00
Decent amount to discuss, let's get going

I don't like the ghost runner...but would they consider a compromise with a man on first? Seems like you need to require more than a single or two ground outs to score a run. Maybe inning 12 go to second base. Inning 14 runner on third.
Anthony Franco
4:01
I don't think this is happening. It kind of defeats the purpose. They want games over with quicker. The runner on second does that, so drawing a more arbitrary distinction where you end games a little faster while preserving the chance of marathon games a bit doesn't really fit what they want to do
4:02
I don't like the rule. As someone who doesn't have a rooting interest in a team winning a game, I find extra-innings thoroughly uninteresting at this point. But the question isn't whether fans or the broader public like the rule. The players and teams decide upon this, and they both have a vested interest in getting games over with
4:04
Obviously there are individual players or team personnel who aren't going to like it, just as there are some fans who love it. No demographic is going to be 100%. But the marathon games generally mean players spending more time at work without getting paid extra, which they broadly don't like, and teams potentially having to rebuild a bullpen that was overworked for one game

As of this week, players on the 40-man teams can be moved to the injured list. How do teams decide who to move onto the 40-man roster to replace them?
Anthony Franco
4:05
It works in reverse of what you're implying. You put a guy on the 60 whenever you find someone you actively want to add to your 40-man. You're not going to add someone to the 40 just to facilitate putting another player on the IL
4:07
You can always backdate an injured list placement. So if Team X has a pitcher who's going to miss the first half rehabbing from Tommy John, they'll just keep that player off the 60-day IL until other circumstances (a waiver target, promotion of a player within the organization, etc.) dictate that they need that spot. It doesn't affect the window to bring back the injured player at all

Since  Burns is upset with the Brewers your thoughts on the Dodgers making a deal?
Anthony Franco
4:07
The Brewers aren't trading him because he's annoyed with the team
4:09
Even if it decreases their chances of getting a long-term extension done -- and Burnes hasn't said that's the case -- Milwaukee has him under arbitration control for two seasons. If they fall out of the playoff race this summer, he's a viable trade candidate as he would've been even if they'd avoided a hearing. Otherwise, they're just going to keep him on the roster for now and essentially tell him to get over it
4:10
I'm sure it's not a situation in which the organization wanted to find itself, but it shouldn't change their plans in any way

Who will be in the Padres starting 5 on opening day? Who will be the next man or two up?
Anthony Franco
4:10
Seems like they're going to start with a six-man group of Musgrove, Darvish, Snell, Wacha, Lugo, Martinez (in some order) and then reevaluate as injuries/performance dictate
4:11
The latter two (Lugo especially) are building off pretty low innings totals after working out of the bullpen so I'm sure they'll try to be cautious with their workloads early on
4:12
After that, it's probably Groome. Morejón could get in there if they're using him for multiple innings out of the bullpen to stay mostly stretched out

Since Ashby is going to start the year on the DL, and there's no indication he'll be back before like June at the earliest, menaing probably July before he's back in the bigs, wouldnt it make sense to use that 40 man slot on say.... Will Smith, or Brad Hand? I can't imagine either guy is getting more than 3.5-4 million on a 1 year deal at this point.... right?
Anthony Franco
4:13
I'd take the over on that for Smith. He should get close to Moore/Chafin money. Feels right for Hand
4:14
I don't know that they need to sign one as a response to losing Ashby, who felt like he was going to get a rotation crack again at some point. But sure, LH relief help fits there. Hoby Milner's better suited as your second left-hander than top matchup option from that side

Why are the Yankees viewed as improved from last year? Seems they lost as much as they added, and would need Rodon and Judge to repeat career years just to stay even.
Anthony Franco
4:15
They feel a little better to me. Judge is going to take a step but Rizzo probably gets some help from the shift ban and Peraza should be a better shortstop than Kiner-Falefa
4:16
Full season of Harrison Bader too
4:17
Rodón's been a top five pitcher for two years now. He's just better than Taillon. The rotation's thin, especially with Montas out, but has more impact at the top end than it did
BFS
4:17
Will Mondesi have a big or small impact on this Red Sox team?
Anthony Franco
4:18
I think he'll play a decent amount. I'm not super bullish on the production. The plate discipline profile is rough

Wilmer Flores is an SF team leader and decent bat but may be redundant with younger RH CI Davis and Villar also on roster. Could you see him being traded and if so, what kind of return could he bring?
Anthony Franco
4:19
He feels a little redundant with Davis and Villar, I agree, but they knew both those guys were going to be on the roster last September and extended Flores through 2025 anyway. He's sticking around for now

4:19
With Montas likely out for the entire season, and considering the Yankees are trying to stay under the tax threshold, would the Yanks move Gleyber Torres ($9.95M in 2023) for a Sean Manea ($12.5M in 2023) or Alex Wood ($12.5 in 2023) from the Giants? Can NY afford the extra $2.5M?
Anthony Franco
4:20
Giants can't trade Manaea right now. Gleyber for Wood? I think the Yankees would do it, especially if the Giants paid down the financial difference, but not sure SF would see Torres as enough of an upgrade on Estrada
4:21
Giants are already deep in right-handed hitting infielders, as mentioned, and most of their starters have spotty injury histories

4:21
could my next contract be in the 10 years, $500 million range? are the potential suitors anyone besides Bos, NYY, NYM, LAD, SF, SD, TX, ChC?
Anthony Franco
4:22
There'll be more teams that try. Angels obviously, Seattle will give it a run. I don't think he's going to Detroit but they have enough long-term payroll space to at least make a competitive offer
4:23
500 feels about right with a typical Ohtani season, probably spread over 11 or 12 years
Fate of the Franchise
4:23
Assuming Angels are competitive and in the playoff hunt prior to trade deadline, do you think Ohtani is likely to sign an in-season extension now believing in the direction of the club, or is he more likely to let it play out and hit free agency? Or if they do make the playoffs, does he sign an extension in the window prior to free agency but at the end of the season? How strong an influence will Trout's encouragement for him to stay play a role in all of this do you think?
Anthony Franco
4:24
No real reason for him not to wait it out at this point. Angels will still be very motivated to get it done once he hits the open market if he decides he'd like to stay
La La Land
4:24
who has the brighter future in KC: Michael Massey or Maikel Garcia?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Garcia can play shortstop, so I think he's more likely to stick around in the majors as a utility type for a few years
4:26
Massey's more likely to be an everyday player but because he's second base or bust, it basically has to be as an everyday player or he's off the roster. Teams typically don't carry second base only players on their bench

Will Jose LeClerc close the majority of games in Texas, or will there be an immediate closer committee with Jonathan Hernandez?
