Steve. Will Cardinals add to current roster?
Anthony Franco
3:19
They're up against where they seem to want to spend but I agree that they could use another starter and they should be in on Monty if the price around there
3:20
That's just really good value and they certainly could benefit from having another #2 type. If he's getting a few offers in that range, maybe the familiarity gives them an edge

When the playoffs were expanded in the last CBA the player's union warned that this could lead to a strategy among teams of trying to work the margins and try to sneak into the playoffs instead of trying to invest in building a legit contender. Seems to be where we are now.
Anthony Franco
3:22
Yeah we were talking about how quiet the market has been -- especially for mid-level hitters -- in a text thread yesterday and Tim brought this up.
3:23
Tim's point: "That extends to competitive teams too, especially when 12 teams get into the playoffs. How many 80-85 win teams are entirely shrugging off the Boras 4? So many teams now are content with an 80-win projection"
Can't disagree with any of that

Does Tommy Pham's price range drop to where we can afford him this Spring?
Anthony Franco
3:23
Yeah it should. I'd be surprised if he gets more than like $5-6M
3:25
I wonder if the market for J.D. Martinez will drop far enough that the Guardians could jump in and just keep Manzardo in Columbus for one more season. Wouldn't do much for the outfield but it'd be a huge boost to the overall offensive production

Level of concern about Senga's injury?
Anthony Franco
3:25
Pretty high any time a pitcher has a shoulder issue

Is the Preller experiment a failure?
Anthony Franco
3:28
That feels harsh. A lot of the stuff they've done has driven excitement among the fanbase and cleared the (admittedly low) bar of being one of the better teams in franchise history in 2022
3:29
I don't think he's had a great front office tenure overall. A lot of the big splashes they've made haven't fit together and/or have been wildly out of step with broader market trends. It seems like some of the management style they've employed has been pretty grating on a coupe different coaching staffs
3:31
At the same time, they've done an excellent job in landing impact talent through the farm system, which has enabled their huge splashes on the trade market. The Snell deal was a heist. Still TBD on Soto but I wouldn't consider that a clear loss. The team underperformed last year but it wasn't his fault
3:32
A lot of their issues have stemmed from pretty bad free agent decisions though. Machado has been a great acquisition but the Hosmer and Bogaerts deals and some of the reliever contracts they've given out looked silly from day one

Do Duran, Smith, Langford, Foscue and Huff all break camp with the team? Those that do not where do they end up? AAA or traded?
Anthony Franco
3:33
I can't see how they fit all five of those guys on the roster unless Seager starts the year on the IL and Durán's at SS
3:34
I'd guess Huff and Foscue are back in Triple-A. Huff's probably just a depth guy at this point, I could see Foscue as a deadline trade piece

3:34
Because the Red Sox clearly aren't trying to win right now, do they have anyone besides Chris Martin who has any trade value left to sell?
Anthony Franco
3:35
Agree that Martin's the obvious one. Pivetta would be interesting with how well he finished last year, but I don't expect they'll trade another starter
3:36
Obviously they have other guys with significant trade value -- Bello, Duran, Casas, etc. --  but Martin has the best combination of surplus value and plausibility of being traded

How does the CBT payroll accounting work for BWJ's extension? The idea of the Royals even coming close to a CBT threshold is comical, of course. Nonetheless, I'm curious how the numbers will work.
Anthony Franco
3:38
The overall guarantee is $288.78MM and 11 years, so it's around $26.25MM each year against the CBT. Player options count as part of the guarantee -- can't assume he's going to opt out -- but the last three team options do not

Revision time: If the Diamondbacks could cancel the 4/84 deal given to E Rodriguez and then offer it identically to the boras 4, which of them might sign it?
Anthony Franco
3:41
I still think none of them. Now if Arizona also didn't trade for the last $13MM on the Eugenio Suárez contract and offered Chapman like 4/95...
The world will never know

There are so many reasons for the Angels being the dysfunctional mess that they are now. In general it is the misguided ownership of Arte Moreno. There doesn’t seem to be any organizational philosophy. They sign around 15 international players each draft, but where are they? Their player development has to be at the bottom of the 30 franchises. Their first year player drafts are pretty much the same. How does this trend get reversed with Arte Moreno as the owner?
Anthony Franco
3:42
Unfortunately it probably doesn't. Just nothing to suggest he has the appetite for anything other than short-sighted pushes for contention without wanting to make the long-term commitments necessary to build a strong organizational pipeline
3:44
It doesn't mean they can't have stretches where they overcome it, but there's not much margin for error for the front office in free agency and they need guys who they draft highly and push quickly to the big leagues to be successful right away

3:45
Do you see the “traditional” DH being phased out?  Seems like rotating guys in and out is the new trend.  K
Anthony Franco
3:48
Yeah I think we're basically there already. There were only three guys (Ohtani, Ozuna, Joey Meneses) who got 500+ plate appearances at DH last season. Meneses is a weird case because the Nats weren't really trying, but generally, you have to be a really good hitter to play that role
3:49
In the early part of the 2010s, there were usually 3-5 guys who were full-time DHs even though only half the league could offer that as a job

Thoughts on Tigers signing Urshela?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Love it for them, can't believe he only got $1.5MM. Guys like Luis Urías and Kyle Farmer -- worse players in my opinion -- were tendered arb contracts in the $5-6MM range
No reason not for Detroit to jump in at that point. Even if they don't want to give him a starting job, he's a solid insurance option throughout the infield

"Just nothing to suggest he has the appetite for anything other than short-sighted pushes for contention without wanting to make the long-term commitments necessary to build a strong organizational pipeline"  Sounds like Dick Montfort too
Anthony Franco
3:54
Yeah I think Colorado suffers from similar problems as the Angels. It seems like Moreno is a little more concerned with public relations whereas Monfort is more so overly optimistic about what his team is capable of, but the effect is pretty similar

Is there any scenario where Wander Franco plays for the Ray's?
