I'd be very surprised if this happens

Can a player sign a contract based on WAR or some other metric? Say each year his pay will be based on the previous year WAR. Of course all parties would have to agree on which metric to use and the value to assign to each "win" or whatever.
Anthony Franco
3:54
No, the CBA prohibits contracts based on performance metrics
3:56
You can do playing time incentives -- plate appearances, innings, starts, games finished as a reliever, etc. -- but you can't condition salary on WAR or even simpler stuff like RBI or runs scored

Any chance that the Pirates take that big plunge and be the dark horse for Jordan Montgomery?
Rangers13
3:56
Would Monty bite on a "pillow contract" with the Rangers for 5/100 broken down at 5 Million this year, 20 million in years 2,3 and 25 million in year 4 leaving 30 million deferred 2029-2033
Anthony Franco
3:57
I don't consider the Pirates a realistic fit for Monty -- it'd take by far the largest free agent investment in team history -- and I expect he'll find a better salary structure than a heavily backloaded and deferred 5/100

Hey, Anthony.  Thanks once more.  If Shohei pitches poorly or doesn't pitch at all for most or all of the balance of his career, does he go into the Hall as an Angel or a Dodger?
Anthony Franco
3:59
This is a great question. I think it'd be the Angels -- so much of the greatness is in the two-way accomplishments -- but I could see it going the other way if he wins a World Series or two with the Dodgers as a full-time DH

How would you rank the Rangers ' young pitchers (White, Winn, Lieter, Kent) in terms of who has the best shot of breaking with the club at the beginning of the season?
Anthony Franco
4:00
Kent's probably the most advanced strike-thrower so I'd give him the best shot

Maybe this is more of a mailbag question. What is the most balanced trade, that helps both teams involved, only using Major League players, that you can come up with?
Anthony Franco
4:04
Yeah I'd need more time to think about this to put together a multi-player package or one that involves household names. I like the idea of the Marlins trading Tanner Scott for a controllable infielder like Ezequiel Duran
4:07
You could probably build a Dylan Cease package from the Orioles using controllable big leaguers. Heston Kjerstad and Dean Kremer maybe?

Based on last year and this preseason, which GM and which Manager are already on the hot seat?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Cardinals probably have to start strong for Oli Marmol to stay safe. No one really stands out on the GM side for an early-season change, I don't think

Who might the Rangers line up with in a trade of Taveras(and others as needed) for SP if they decide they are ok with Carter in CF and Langford in LF?
Anthony Franco
4:10
Guardians probably make the most sense. I'm sure San Diego would love Leody but they don't have much pitching to dangle

Jays finish 3rd or 4th in the AL East this year? Do they gt a WC bid?
Anthony Franco

3rd and a Wild Card for me

Curious, is there any kind of limit on what a team can spend on a minor league deal. Like could a mlb team give someone 200k?
Anthony Franco
4:13
Not aware of any max salary for a minor league contract. Teams can offer higher salaries to differentiate minor league deals and do this pretty frequently. You see a lot of split deals that pay like $300-400K in the minors so teams can get a guy through waivers while incentivizing them to accept the Triple-A assignment instead of electing FA
buffy, the umpire slayer
4:13
if the Jays are the 3rd place finisher in the east, who is 4th - missing the playoffs?
Anthony Franco
4:13
I'd put them above Boston and Tampa Bay

Alright, have to wrap things up here. Got through most of the questions this week but as always, feel free to throw anything else at me on X
