No real reason for the Mets to trade Baty. I don't love Vientos for Pittsburgh. Tough park for a player whose game is basically all right-handed power. Not a ton of defensive flexibility if he can't play a viable third base
3:37
Admittedly don't have much of an alternative though. I don't hate the Josh Jung idea but that leaves Texas without a third baseman when there's nothing out there. I'd rather just roll with Triolo than Urías
3:38
They'll probably sign Rengifo or something as a bat-first complement to Triolo and see how it shakes out at the deadline. Triolo's fine if he's your worst regular, but obviously that puts a lot on Griffin to win the shortstop job early in the season and hit right away

I believe you have stated the chances of Skubal being traded is something like .000000005% Anything changed due to arbitration ruling?
Anthony Franco
3:38
Haha Steve said that
3:39
I think it's like 1.5%

Any indication that the lack of spending this off season by the Guardians has anything to do with the Dolans possibly selling the team?
Anthony Franco
3:39
No but it sucks, even by extremely low Dolan standards
3:41
They won the division, their franchise player agrees to defer a bunch of money, and it sure seems like they're just going to pocket it and run a 2005 level payroll? Brutal
3:42
Still think they should sign Nick Martinez but doing literally nothing with the offense and expecting all of Kayfus, DeLauter, Valera and Bazzana to hit is pathetic

Hi Anthony I’m wondering if you have any news on Even Phillips and Michael Kopech.  They were both successful when healthy with the Dodgers.  I don’t know how they are recovering from injuries but haven’t seen either sign with another team.  I would like to see them both back with Dodgers.  Thanks.
Anthony Franco
3:43
Phillips might be a two-year guy, should've mentioned him with Miller. Friedman said around the Winter Meetings that they wanted him back but the pitcher wanted to wait to sign until he was further along in his rehab. I expect they'll get something done eventually
3:44
Kopech's apparently healthy now and I assume he'll get a couple million and sign elsewhere with a path to a late-inning role
Marlins
3:44
Think Paul Goldschmidt works for the Marlins?
Anthony Franco
3:45
I'd rather have him than Morel but if he's choosing between a few offers in the $5M range, not sure Miami's the preferred destination
3:46
They're trending well organizationally but still a long shot contender, which isn't ideal for a 38-year-old signing for one year

Great offseason for the Braves but I’d like one more arm. Bassit feels like the best fit. Your thoughts?
Dirt
3:47
Hi Anthony,  Which SP is a better fit for the Braves and what are the odds of AA signing either to at least a 1-year deal? Verlander or Bassit?
Anthony Franco
3:48
Slight preference for Bassitt but I'd be happy with either of them. I'm lower on the Braves offseason generally -- they checked a lot of boxes but didn't feel they got great bang for their buck on any of them -- but that's not a big deal if they have enough left in the budget to add a mid-rotation arm

Arrighetti doesn’t seem like a bullpen guy to me.  Do they try to move him if he doesn’t make the rotation?  Does he have any value?
Anthony Franco
3:51
He's an optionable starter with ok stuff. He'd have some value but probably not enough that a Houston team already light on rotation depth is going to trade him away. Another team offering their 15th-best prospect for him doesn't do much. Just send him back to Triple-A
JR
3:51
Do you think that the O's, after losing out on Valdez, will pivot to Gallen, Giolito, Verlander or Bassitt?
Anthony Franco
3:52
Yeah I'd be surprised if they don't come away with one of those four, would guess JV if I had to pick

Are players meant to be paid market value in the third year of arbitration? What is the logic of the Tigers filing at 19? Can’t find solid answers on this
Anthony Franco
3:54
It's not meant to approximate market value. Skubal would be above $45M if it were. There's a clause in the CBA that players in the 5-6 year class can compare themselves to free agent prices, but it's a weird middle ground where they're also compared to arbitration precedents
3:55
It's a poorly written clause in my opinion, but it mostly hadn't raised the arbitration ceiling until Skubal won. They're not the first people to invoke it but arbitrators had by and large ignored it before
Do not pass GO!, Do not collect $200...
3:55
Go directly to DFA. Is it normal that it seems like only a handful of guys get claimed and DFA over and over and over? It seems to me that if you aren't likely to be on the Opening Day roster or aren't a near-MLB prospect, then you might be DFA-able. That's gotta be 5-10 guys per team. Yet I feel like there have been 20 Osvaldo Bido stories this offseason as an example. Is it just that most teams only have 2-3 fringey spots on their 40-man rosters? And so, the same 10 players get cycled around?
Anthony Franco
3:57
A lot of times it's just a roster flexibility thing. Bido and Luciano are out of options and not currently MLB-caliber players, so teams just keep cycling them around until one of them can get him through waivers
Also just easier for a team to DFA guy they just claimed since they can feel like they're playing with house money if they lose him

Any of last year's Pirate underachievers (Cruz, Davis, Gonzales, Reynolds) likely to substantially rebound this year?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Reynolds already did in the second half. No real concern there. I'm completely out on Davis and Gonzales
I expect Cruz to be better than he was last year but giving up hope that the contact is getting to a point where he'll be a star

Rockies need as many high velocity and movement guys as possible. Would Kopech be a good target for them?
Anthony Franco
4:01
Tough spot to sell him on a pillow deal but no harm in trying. They've got a few power arms back there but obviously a ton of open spots in the bullpen

To the untrained eye it looks like the Yankees haven't improved while their main competitors mostly have. What is Cashman's calculus behind the lack of moves? I don't doubt they'll compete for a playoff spot, but is that enough anymore?
Anthony Franco
4:02
Seems like they had enough room in the budget for one splash, and if that's the case, don't blame them for prioritizing Belli. I don't love the price in a vacuum but he's basically tailor made for the park
4:05
Liked the Weathers flier while they wait on Cole/Rodón. Ideally would've liked to see them do something in the bullpen (Romero's still a possibility) with how bad everyone aside from Bednar was down the stretch, but the FA relief pitching prices were really high and they all came off the board before Bellinger did

Padres need one starting pitcher.  Will it be a free agent or will they swing a deal?  Preller has to be itching , he hasnt traded somebody in quite a while!!
Anthony Franco

What does Preller love more, trades or Nick Martinez?

Are the Mets done with the bullpen or does Stearns have something up his sleeve?
