Do you think the Reds will sign one of Pham, Taylor, or JD Davis to  fill out their roster?  Or go with one of Harrison, Kemp, or Ford (assuming Fairchild is the 25th man).

I don't know that MAT even gets there anymore. He's probably looking at Duvall money at this point. He should've done better than that, but it's tough to hold out hope given how cold the market has gotten for position players
3:32
I'd been skeptical on the Reds fit that you've pushed for a while because I thought he'd find an everyday CF job. At this point, it doesn't look like it's going to happen (especially since the Padres seem alright with Merrill out there). If he has to settle for a fourth OF role, the Reds make sense

AL only 10 team redraft, rank Skubal, Ragans, Woo, Bibee and Pepiot. Are the all fairly close is are there definite breaks?
Anthony Franco
3:33
I'd go Skubal, Bibee, Ragans, Woo, Pepiot with a bit of a gap between Bibee and Ragans

Is the current excess of ML talent available a sign MLB is ready for expansion?
Anthony Franco
3:34
Believe someone asked something similar a few weeks ago. I don't think they're related. If Snell or Monty had gotten the offer they wanted in December, they'd be off the market

I love your work on the podcast, Darragh does a great job hosting every week. I just wish it was longer.
Anthony Franco
3:35
Thanks! Tim was a big proponent of keeping it shorter. He feels that you're likely to lose people if you're consistently running an hour or longer
3:37
I'd be more in your camp. I listen to a ton of podcasts that run for 90-120 minutes (helps to have a job that allows for that kind of background noise) but Tim was pretty set on keeping it short most weeks and only occasionally mixing in the longer ones at times of the year -- start of the offseason, deadline, etc. -- that call for the entire full-time staff to be on there

Do you see the trend moving towards 6 man rotations being standard or do you think baseball FO are more concerned about increased rosters being a bargaining chip against the union? Or am I missing the reason why a 6 man isn’t universal?
Anthony Franco
3:39
I don't see it as opposition to roster expansion so much as teams independently concluding that the #6 guy in their rotation -- who is usually the eighth or ninth starter on the depth chart after accounting for injuries -- isn't usually someone they want on the mound if they can avoid it
3:40
I think you'll see more teams using six-man staffs at points where the schedule is really tough -- 15 games in 14 days, that kind of thing -- but the majority of teams would rather have their seventh-best reliever out there over a sixth starter because the former is typically more effective on a rate basis

Did the Dodgers have to pay a posting fee for Yamamoto?  Does it count against the tax line if they did?  Yes, I've been living under a rock.

Can you give me details please on Yamamotos opt out please?  Apparently it moves but which way and for whom?
Anthony Franco
3:41
Posting fee was $50.625MM, does not count against the luxury tax
3:43
The abridged version is basically that he'll be able to opt out after 2029 and '31 if he doesn't have Tommy John surgery before then. If he does, those get pushed back two years each

Good afternoon, I was just looking for your opinion. I have read and heard arguments over if Cashman is as great of a GM as some make him out to be. The 90’s championships teams were mostly the previous GM ‘s teams that he put together. That just leaves one championship he has one as GM argument along with a number of bad trades and having the highest payroll year after year and not wining the title. Even this year. a payroll over 300 and yet some holes in the pitching staff. Is he overrated or no. Thanks for your time
Anthony Franco
3:46
I still think Cashman's an above-average GM. It's true that they haven't had the championships recently -- which is going to be the expectations for most of the fanbase given the franchise's history and payrolls -- but they've also essentially never run out a bad team under his watch. That's not easy to do no matter what kind of payroll you're running out there
3:47
We've seen the Mets, Red Sox, Padres, etc. underperform in recent years despite top-half payrolls. For all the faults of the Yankees' roster construction -- heavy reliance on the righty power hitters with contact questions, inconsistent back of the rotation, a lot of investment in guys on the wrong side of 30 -- they haven't bottomed out.
3:48
That's in large part because the Yankees are maybe the best team in baseball at finding and developing key contributors in the bullpen out of unheralded acquisitions

3:48
Any chance of my fantasy that one of the big FA arms will survive until the O's ownership changes, and that Rubenstein and Co. will swoop in for a splash signing?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Wouldn't get your hopes up haha
3:50
I'd still be surprised if Snell and Monty are unsigned into April and, more to the point, I don't think Rubenstein is going to sign off on a nine-figure investment within a couple weeks of taking control of the franchise

Do you think Alignd sports management will deal with Farhan differently going forward or will they forgive and leave themselves open to JD Davis 2.0?
Anthony Franco
3:51
They're annoyed but it's not going to stop them from dealing with the Giants entirely. Even if they don't particularly like Zaidi or his operating style, it's not doing their clients any favors to cut off a potential bidder
3:52
Future clients, to be clear. I don't think J.D. Davis will be playing for the Giants any time soon

Is there anyone on the White Sox that has trade value right now beyond Robert?  Are they praying a couple of guys play well enough by midseason that they can cash them in for prospects?
Anthony Franco
3:54
Robert's the only one with big trade value (aside from the prospects). There'd be interest in Vaughn, Crochet, Shuster, etc. if they wanted to move them but it's not high enough to make it worth their while

Javier Baez hasn't looked good for a while, and this spring he's looked like about as good of a hitter as I am. Could you see the Tigers cutting him at some point this year if it doesn't get better?
Anthony Franco
3:56
I'd find that more likely if there were anyone in the organization who seems like a viable candidate to step in at shortstop in his place
3:57
If he's terrible again, I could see them going after Adames or Kim next offseason and cutting bait. It's tough to do in-season unless someone from the system comes out of nowhere
Dave
3:57
Adames for Ryan and Lux who says no?  What do Dodgers need to give up for Adames?
Anthony Franco
3:57
I wouldn't give up River Ryan for one year of Adames
Barry Bonds
3:58
Isn’t Boras allowed to negotiate with owners? I don’t see the problem with appealing to the boss of a company
Anthony Franco
3:59
Yeah, it's not against the rules or anything. Ricketts' point, which I agree with, is that owners aren't as well equipped as their baseball ops to decide whether certain moves are smart decisions for the organization, so he doesn't want to be part of those discussions
4:00
I don't think it's an out of bounds strategy on the agent's part, but a lot of the most egregious free agent decisions made by teams have come when owners made a decision of which their front office wasn't as supportive

In my AL auction, 5x5 (ba, r, hr, rbi, sb) league we can keep 4 players for a second season. I'm flipping between J. Duran at $1 or Trevor Story at $5. I'm leaning towards Duran, but neither of them have a lengthy recent string of seasons to garner confidence in. Im always hunting for steals and possible lead-off hitters. What's your take? Thanks
Anthony Franco
4:01
Yeah, I'd also go with Duran. I'm basically out on Story providing much of anything offensively at this point
