Despite wishful thinking by teams that need a closer, there is no way Oakland trades their fireballer at the deadline, is there? They need somebody for their fans to watch and he's cheap. He would bring a haul though...
Anthony Franco
4:31
Yeah I can't see them trading Miller. Would net a haul but we basically don't see players that talented with that level of team control get moved
4:32
Lucas Erceg's a 29-year-old converted infielder who's missing a ton of bats in a setup capacity. I do think there's a world where the A's move him this summer
Padre Jonathan
4:32
I know it's not easy but is there any way that the Padres can shore up their pitching staff? I just do not see a path to contention with pitching right now.

Is there something 'wrong' with Joe Musgrove, or is this just some early season, small sample size kinks?
Anthony Franco
4:35
I think Musgrove will be alright. The home run rate spiked but that can bounce around a lot in small samples. The velo's down slightly and he's not getting quite as many whiffs on the curveball as he usually does, but there's nothing in the stuff that seems super glaring
4:37
Once Musgrove and King iron things out, the rotation's alright. Not much depth, as we knew coming into the year, but I'm still alright with that group 1-5. The bullpen worries me a little more, don't have a ton of faith in the guys before Suarez

Let’s talk bright spots on the White Sox!!!
Anthony Franco
4:38
They swept the Rays!
4:39
Fedde looks good. Still broadly encouraged by what we've seen from Crochet. Gavin Sheets is hitting. Everything else...

4:39
Wow. I'd have Witt #1 in that great redraft question.
Anthony Franco
4:40
Totally defensible
RaceDog
4:40
Spencer Torkelson = bust?
Anthony Franco
4:41
Willing to give it a little more time. He started really slowly last year too and came along. It's tough to hit in Detroit in April
4:42
We're past the point of him being the kind of hitter you'd want to get with a 1-1 pick, but that was a pretty rough draft in general and I still think there's a viable everyday first baseman there

4:42
Are the 2024 Red Sox for real? I am loving this team but it feels too early to believe they’re a contender this year right?
Anthony Franco
4:44
A little too early for me to come around, yeah. They've been better than I anticipated -- especially in the rotation obviously -- but my main issue with the roster was how long that group of talented but mostly unproven starters could hold up
4:45
That's not something they can answer in April, and they've played about as well as I think you could've reasonably asked for to this point, but I need to see it for another 6-8 weeks before I buy in
Rangers13
4:45
Should Eovaldi go on DL, do the Rangers ride with White and or Leiter or do you think Chris Young should be on the phone to White Sox about Kopech/Fedde/Soroka; Marlins for Cabrera /Rogers, Perez /Falter/Priester from Pirates or Sears/Blackburn from Oakland. There is Lynn and Sandoval but neither of those seems to be an upgrade over in- house candidates.
In a follow up to earlier question, do you think it would be better to trade for a mid reliever type like Liberatore, Z. Thompson or Kopech and temporarily fill Eovaldi's spot with Urena or Winn?
Anthony Franco
4:47
Not the most exciting answer but I expect they'll just call up Leiter for a couple weeks. It's too early to make a notable trade for a starter, particularly when they've got a handful of key guys coming back from injury later in the season

MLB social media replays seem to have gotten bad in recent years. A home run replay is 25 seconds long and starts with the pitcher already 90% through his motion. Is there any reason for that?
Anthony Franco
4:48
I hadn't noticed this but now that you point it out, it does seem like they're cutting those about as close as they can. I have no idea why haha

I am going to watch my first Atlantic League game today! What's the level of competition like and how much do MLB teams scout the league?
Anthony Franco
4:50
Teams monitor it but they're not scouting it at anywhere near the intensity they will with affiliated ball or the draft. Competition level varies but a lot of the guys who sign out of the Athletic League go to Triple-A
4:51
It's probably somewhere between Double-A and Triple-A in terms of overall quality, but the players there are typically older and don't have the same kind of ceiling you'd see from a lot of guys in a Double-A game

This has bothered me for a while. Why do they cut the clips so oddly?
Anthony Franco
4:51
We have an uprising in the making
AL West
4:52
Is this the weakest division in baseball this year?
Anthony Franco
4:53
I still like the Astros too much to go that far. I'd probably take the NL Central as the weakest for not having the same level of top-end talent as the others
Oakland A's
4:53
Would us being good be bad for baseball as it would incentivize owners to point to us as a reason to not "overinvest" in their rosters?
Anthony Franco
4:55
Not a huge deal for me. The Rays have succeeded on super low payrolls for a while. Just because they've been able to do it doesn't mean other teams can replicate it, even though we've seen some of them try
I don't think the A's are going to finish particularly close to .500 this year anyway

Is Riley Greene an all star?
Anthony Franco
4:55
Sure looks like it's trending that way
Gleyber Pains
4:55
I've seen enough of Gleyber. If he's not hitting, which he isn't, he useless. He's a sub-par defender and one of the worst base runners I've ever seen. When DJ comes back I'd put DJ at 2B and leave Oswaldo at 3B. If nothing else, at least we know DJ can field the position
Anthony Franco
4:56
Yeah this is one of those situations where I think you just have to wait it out for another six weeks because of his track record
4:58
But I also concede that it's easier to say that when I'm not watching him play every day. I get why you'd be ready to move on as a fan, even if I think that'd be too hasty if they did bench him
wvpirate
4:58
What changes do the Pirates need to make?
Anthony Franco
5:01
There's just not enough talent on the roster still. I'm surprised they haven't called up Gonzales to give him another shot over Triolo, but I don't think either player's a long-term answer at second base. Setting for Rowdy Tellez at first base was never super exciting and it looks worse in retrospect considering they probably could've gotten Brandon Belt at a similar price
