For Nandez

I've seen some fans complaining about Alejandro Kirk starting the ASG over Jose (Lee) Trevino . They're smoking something funky, right? It's a pretty clear choice isn't it?
Anthony Franco
4:19
Yeah I'd go Kirk quite easily. More playing time, he's been the better hitter
4:20
Trevino's been more surprisingly good, and he's a Yankee (which helps the notoriety). His case probably rests on his reputation as an elite game-caller and handler of a pitching staff
4:21
That matters and Trevino's been awesome, but I'd just go with the guy with better numbers over a larger body of work
Timbo
4:21
What kind of return could the Dbacks get for Christian Walker?
Anthony Franco
4:22
A couple mid-tier lottery tickets but nothing franchise changing. Good on them for sticking with him -- I'd have non-tendered him last year and been wrong -- but the low-OBP corner slugger doesn't bring back a whole lot in trade anymore
Jim Halpert
4:22
Will the Yankees actually win 120 games?
Anthony Franco
4:23
Definitely give me the under on 120. Could they get to 116 to tie the '01 Mariners?
4:24
They'd need 64 wins in their last 92 games, a .696 pace. I'd take the under there too but it's doable and man it'd be fun to watch
Devin
4:24
Could the Tigers trade Miguel Cabrera?
Anthony Franco
4:25
No appeal there. He's hitting a bit better but not great and still due $32MM next year
Jhoan Duran
4:25
Does he have an all-star case?
Anthony Franco
4:26
For sure. Second among AL relievers in strikeout minus walk rates, second in win probability added, third in SIERA
4:27
I'd probably call him the second-best reliever in the AL so far behind Clay Holmes. Could argue for Jorge Lopez or Emmanuel Clase above him but they should probably all be there
Aaron
4:27
The Cards are looking like a good team, but not a particularly great one. They would certainly seem to be a tier below the best teams in baseball but without any obvious areas to improve, aside from the bullpen. If you were Mo how would you launch them into that top tier of the best in baseball?
Anthony Franco
4:28
Yeah it's a bit of a double-edged sword. Having good players everywhere makes it a little harder to upgrade midseason, since there are fewer problem areas
4:30
I think they make a run at a high-leverage reliever (like the just-mentioned Jorge López) and perhaps a complementary left-handed bat since Dickerson hasn't worked out, but otherwise, they're pretty well set
RAGBAI
4:30
The Brewers need some offensive help. Is the need greater in CF, 1B or somewhere else?
Anthony Franco
4:31
Center field's the big concern. Rowdy Tellez is fine at first. Could upgrade but it's not an absolute must
4:32
I've floated the Benintendi idea a few times in these chats, which is indicative of how tough it's going to be to find an actual everyday center fielder this summer
BobbyBob
4:32
Why haven't the Jays called up Adrian Hernandez from Buffalo? He seems to be killing it.
Anthony Franco
4:34
Just must not feel he's as good as his numbers. I've never seen him but public reports peg him as a low-90s velo guy
4:35
Should get a shot at some point this season though. Has to be added to the 40-man at the end of the year anyways, and you can only dominate upper level hitters for so long before the team kind of has to see if it can work in the majors
Franco the Ant
4:35
Who would you take in the NL Central as of now and why?
Anthony Franco
4:36
St. Louis. More comfortable with their lineup depth and Milwaukee's dealing with injuries to Peralta and Ashby
Sam
4:36
How is it that the Cards keep pulling these plucky middle infielders from nowhere? Tommy Edman and Brendan Donovan this year are both looking like huge wins for that system. Not to mention Gorman who didn't come from nowhere, but still looks talented
Anthony Franco
4:37
Yeah it's a hell of a credit to their amateur scouting team. Donovan and Edman were college draftees in the mid rounds (seventh and sixth, respectively). Those guys aren't supposed to be big leaguers at all, much less above-average regulars
4:38
Broadly speaking, the Cards have just been awesome at identifying guys who can hit. It sounds simplistic, but evaluators talk all the time about the hit tool being the hardest to scout, since it's the least objectively measurable. St. Louis has proven for over a decade they're really good at it
BoKnowsBaseball
4:38
What's your favourite trade that worked out brilliantly for both sides?
Anthony Franco
4:39
Hmm, there are probably better examples but that Haniger/Segura/Ketel Marte swap springs to mind
4:40
Maybe a little weird to say it worked "brilliantly" for Arizona because Taijuan Walker got hurt, but Marte's basically the face of the franchise now. Seattle got two everyday players, one of whom they later spun off for their franchise shortstop
4:41
As a more niche example, my brother and I were just talking the other day about the Steve Pearce trade
4:42
Non-competitive Jays team moves an impending free agent (Pearce) to the Red Sox at the 2018 deadline. He goes on to win World Series MVP that year for Boston
4:43
Toronto got Santiago Espinal, who was basically viewed as an org guy at the time. He exceeds all expectations and becomes a pretty good second baseman. Not bad
sgrossman
4:43
From the Nats' roster, who is likely to be gone at the trade deadline: Cruz, Bell, Yadiel Hernandez, Cesar Hernandez, Franco, Cishek, Rainey, Edwards, Escobar, Adrianza? Maybe Robles, too? Does anyone want a catcher bad enough to trade for Riley Adams?
Anthony Franco
4:44
Cruz and Bell for sure. I think Rainey and Edwards will go and could see someone taking a shot on Robles
The rest of the guys you mentioned feel like they'll end up sticking around. None of them really does much for a contender
RAGBAI
4:45
Does Bender return as closer for the Marlins? A committee begins? Or does he become eighth inning set up man?
Anthony Franco
4:46
Probably a middle innings guys to start. Tough to toss him back in the ninth when he has a 9.8% swinging strike rate and a 4.50 ERA
He was a really fun breakout story last year. Hope he can turn it around but this season has not been good so far
