I have mentioned this before but after seeing Manny Machado's injury at first base ( Remember Ronald Acuna and Bryce Harper) MLB needs to make the bases ground level like at home plate. Technology could make it possible. If I understand rule changes next year the bases will be about twice the size so that just increases chances of injuries.

I like this idea actually. Would be a weird visual at first but we'd get used to it pretty quickly and I don't really see the downside
4:48
Diving back on pickoffs is maybe a problem?

What is the latest you think we see tatis return? Is it even a possibility he doesn't get to that point before the end of the year
Anthony Franco

Nothing's impossible but that'd have to be a pretty major setback. I'd be very surprised if he's not back by around mid-August

Anthony, how many teams could afford to pay Shohei Ohtani if he were to become a FA. If Ohtani indicates that he will play out his last year under Angels control would they then have to trade him? It seems the Angels could run out of time to extend him. What is your take on this?
Anthony Franco
4:51
Probably about 8-10 teams that could legitimately engage in a bidding war -- the usual suspects (Dodgers, Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, Angels, Mets, Phillies, Giants, etc.)
4:52
That's going on the assumption he wants to maximize his earning power, which may not be the case. He threw away a bunch of money by coming over from Japan before he was 25 because of the bonus pool rules. Everyone knew what he was doing at the time, himself included, but he prioritized other stuff
4:53
As for part two of your question, I absolutely cannot see them trading him -- at least until next summer's deadline. At that point, if you're out of it again and extension talks have gotten nowhere, ok. But until the last possible minute, they're going to want him around

Do you think Cavan Biggio is a Bluejay at the end of the season?
Anthony Franco
4:53
At the end of the 2022 season, yes. Opening Day 2023, no.

Whom can I target at the trade deadline given Giants have cooled off since mid May and are in a 4 team scrum (ATL, STL/MIL, PHL) for 2 WC spots.  I have an injured/aging,  fading mostly LH infield (Crawford, La Stella, Belt + Longoria), inconsistent RPs (McGee, Rogers, Doval) and uncertainties at catcher. Related, what could Joey Bart bring me in a trade?
Anthony Franco
4:55
They're as good a fit as any team for Contreras, talked about the bullpen needs earlier in the chat. Otherwise, I think they're mostly in a good spot
4:56
It's a little similar to the Cardinals situation, where they just have solid to good players everywhere (except catcher)
4:57
Would be surprised to see them move Bart given the lack of long-term alternatives at catcher, but he'd still certainly have appeal to other teams if they made him available

How could Soto be worth 500 million when he can't even hit .250? Right now he is not even worth 200 million.
Anthony Franco
4:58
Soto's 23 years old and has a .289/.423/.534 career slash line. He's incredible, two months of mediocre ball-in-play results notwithstanding

Any news on the anti trust lawsuit brought against mlb?
Anthony Franco
4:59
Nothing recent that I'm aware of. I doubt it'll go anywhere personally

Who's seat is currently hotter, Scott Servais or Tory Lovello?
Anthony Franco
5:00
Servais and Dipoto feel pretty attached at the hip, and I think those guys will get another year even if Seattle continues to disappoint
5:01
Lovullo's less safe in my view. Tough to expect much better results than they've gotten with that young a roster and the front office seems to love him, but I wonder how long ownership will remain patient at this point

What do you expect from Muncy and Bellinger for the rest of the year?
Anthony Franco
5:03
This probably is who Bollinger is now. Muncy's tough because he certainly seems to still be hurting -- batted ball authority is just way down. Cautiously optimistic we'll see improvement as he gets further removed from the initial injury but less so than I was a month ago
Ok that's all I've got time for today
5:04
Apologies for the things I didn't get to. Happy to take questions on Twitter throughout the week, and if I'll be sure to cover what I missed next Friday if you want to throw the same questions at me
Thanks as always for supporting the site and for all the questions, have a great weekend!
