Yeah he should be out there and feels very Royals to me
3:40
This is McCarthy's last option year. He's not hitting for any power in Reno. Alek Thomas isn't even playing that well in CF and the D-Backs haven't gone back to McCarthy. Seems like he's more or less out of their plans. I imagine they'd move him for a couple 40 FV type prospects, guys in the 15-30 range in the system
3:41
Is he a significant upgrade for Kansas City? Not sure, but he's at least had some sustained MLB success that Drew Waters has not

Anyone currently out of the playoffs as things stand today in both leagues that you see moving into the playoffs?
Anthony Franco
3:42
Coming around on Milwaukee just doing the thing they always do -- not catching the Cubs this time but grabbing a Wild Card spot
3:44
Seattle or K.C. in the AL, I guess, but they're literally a half game out so that basically doesn't count. Guess I'd still give the Red Sox the best shot of the AL teams below K.C. but things seem like they're going off the rails there

Odds the Angels actually trade players that won’t be back next season?
Anthony Franco
3:45
Anderson should go but the return's going to be pretty weak. Rengifo has been so bad that he's more in DFA territory than an actual trade candidate. No reason to hold Kenley, he'll go
3:47
Ward feels like the test case. Weak outfield trade market, he's hitting for power and going to make upwards of $10M in his final year of arbitration. They should move him but they were so heavily focused on only dealing rentals last year
Might not have mattered with Rengifo because he hurt his wrist anyway, but he's the kind of guy they probably would've held regardless even though they had no business doing so
Luzardo
3:48
What in the world is happening, tipping pitches? Injury? Online Betting against himself?
Anthony Franco
3:48
Lol going to guess it's not the latter
3:49
The stuff still looks good. Luzardo implied yesterday that he believes he's tipping something based on the comfort level that opponents had even when he executed his pitches. He just didn't seem to know what might be causing it

What is the most important add for the Mets to push them over the top for a WS win?
Anthony Franco
3:51
I don't think they need a huge splash. I assumed they'd end up looking for a true #1 starter at the deadline but the rotation has been better (and held up for far longer) than I expected it to
3:53
I'd like the roster a little more if they had a healthy Mullins in center field over Taylor, I guess. The bigger factor is whether they get better second half production from Vientos and Alvarez, but those aren't guys they need to block via trades
Tigers
3:53
Can we hang onto the AL central after tork/baez/gleyber regress and our back end rotation is iffy?
Anthony Franco
3:55
They've built a six-game cushion and have been fantastic going back to the second half of last year. Still not sure I buy them as the true best team in the American League, but I do expect them to hold onto the division at this point
Cole Young
3:55
Will the M's live with his growing pains or does he have a short leash?
Anthony Franco
3:57
Yeah he's going to get an extended look. They've already done that for Williamson, who isn't as talented, and Moore's better suited in a utility role
Kevin in Tx
3:57
Is Adolis Garcia done!
Anthony Franco
3:59
Seems like he's done in Texas, at least. There's still some bat speed and the exit velocities are strong, but his contact point has gotten too steep and he's hitting a lot of pop-ups and lazy fly balls

Do you think that there's any fire to the smoke of these Jarren Duran trade rumors?
Anthony Franco
4:00
Basically aligned with where Steve and Darragh were on the pod this week
4:01
Of course teams are calling, the Sox can consider it because they've got Anthony waiting, but it's tough to see how the Padres specifically make it work unless they budge on Salas (or De Vries, which seems even less likely) and it's a difficult ask for any team to meet

Bowden Francis was so solid in the second half of last year, and has been an absolute mess so far this year.  Who is the real Bowden Francis?
Anthony Franco
4:04
He went completely off the rails the second I was starting to buy in. He's in between the two extremes obviously but I think he's closer to this year that the guy he was in the second half last season
4:06
The curveball was getting hit hard even last year, it was a lot of fastball-split. I still like the latter pitch but it's tough to make that approach work when the fastball sits 92. It's going to lead to a lot of home runs

What’s your assessment of Alonso’s value at this stage. All world April, abhorrent May, settling somewhere in the middle…does he really command $30m AAV?
Anthony Franco
4:08
I think he could get there over three. Less confident in that if he's trying to get four years
4:09
He should still be in better shape than he was last offseason. No QO, the walk year production is going to look better even if it's largely built on the ridiculous April, maybe a little more clear-eyed at the beginning of the offseason about how the market shapes up for this type of player

My question is about the language of baseball, and other sports. When a tackle prevents a touchdown or an outfielder leaps to catch a ball at the wall, it is called a touchdown-saving tackle or a homerun-saving catch. But saving is the opposite of preventing. Why do people say "save" when they mean "prevent"? It is inconsistent, since all agree that the closer saves the victory, rather than the loss that he prevented? It has bothered me for years.
Anthony Franco
4:12
Haha I have never once thought about this. I feel like I hear "home run robbery" more than "homer-saving catch," which seems more consistent though
You've converted me on "touchdown-saving tackle." I've definitely heard that a million times and never thought about it

You’ll need to attach a telescopic lens to the old crystal ball for this one:  Who are the top five SP's you feel most confident will still be pitching for their current teams five years from now?
Anthony Franco
4:13
Hmm. I think the obvious place to start are the guys on recently signed long-term deals
4:15
So Fried for sure. I'll stick with Yamamoto here even though he can opt out four years from now if he stays healthy. I imagine if it gets to that point that the Dodgers would find some way to keep him
4:16
Nola has five years left on a big-market team with 10-and-5 rights, so I'll take him even though there's a chance he's kind of a roster bubble guy by the end of the deal
4:20
Man, it gets tough from here. There aren't any obvious controllable guys who feel completely untradeable. Give me Crochet and then I guess Bryan Woo as the one of the Seattle guys who might be the easiest to extend
