Would Mayo be an unreasonable return for Stroman?
Anthony Franco
4:24
Yeah that's too much. Mayo's probably going to go into 2024 as a top 20 prospect in MLB
Philly A's
4:24
Sorry for doubting you guys... even as an A's fan I skipped some stories on them.  As always, thanks for all the work!
Anthony Franco
4:24
Ha, no offense taken!

4:24
Would the Mets trade Verlander/Mad Max and a large chuck of his  contract if the Reds dangled one of their top 5 prospects?
First time caller
4:24
Do the Mets have any trade chips that could get them a young controllable pitcher.  Maybe Scherzer if they pay down most of the contract?  Should they consider trading Alonso?
Anthony Franco
4:26
Scherzer feels more realistic than JV. Doubt they want to move anyone off the '24 roster (Alonso included) but Scherzer could opt out, so if they agree to pay down his salary and cover next year if he opts in, he'd probably be the most appealing rental starter on the market
4:28
I think he'd get a back of the top 100 prospect if they did that (and Max agreed to waive the NTC). As for the Reds specifically, they're not giving up Elly, McLain, Abbott, CES, Steer types for a rental. Doubt they'd do Noelvi Marte either since they're still ahead of schedule this year
4:29
But if they built something around like Connor Phillips or Cam Collier, I could see that making mutual sense. Lot of moving parts to hammer out though
NYY
4:29
Could the yankees end up finishing in (gasp!) last place?
Anthony Franco
4:29
They'd be my pick for that with how bad the offense looks
AZ
4:29
What does AZ need to do to really take the next step on '24?
Anthony Franco
4:30
Find another starting pitcher. Hopefully it's Pfaadt, since they're not going to sign Aaron Nola or Yoshi Yamamoto
4:31
They're good already but they can't have Tommy Henry, Ryne Nelson and Zach Davies as their 3-5 starters and expect to be great
Tradezies

TO TOR: Josh Hader, Seth Lugo
TO SD: Cavan Biggio, Yoszer Zulueta, Brandon Barriera
yes?
Anthony Franco
4:31
Not enough for SD

The MLBPA is concerned about pitch clock violations determining the final outcome of playoff games. Supporters of the pitch clock point to existing timers in basketball and football that are in full effect in their playoffs with no apparent problems. The three sports' situations are not truly parallel. In basketball and football, timer violations result in inaction: either the shot doesn't count or the play never runs. In these cases the status quo ante remains unchanged. In baseball, however, a pitch clock violation can result in an action that changes the prior condition; i.e.--a bases-loaded walk that forces in a potential winning run.

It seems that a minor adjustment can prevent this "dreaded" outcome without significantly lengthening the game's duration. I propose that for all MLB postseason games, beginning in the ninth inning and onward, at-bats may not end on a pitch clock violation. In other words, starting in the ninth inning a pitch clock violation may not count as strike three or ball four.
What do you think? Could such a change be enacted? Sorry for the early submission. Thanks.
Anthony Franco
4:32
Seems like Manfred is generally of the opinion that this isn't a problem, and the league controls whether this happens. My guess is they don't make any changes to the rule and the PA just ends up annoyed
4:33
I think it's a little hypocritical for Manfred to say he wants the regular season and playoffs to look the same when the league pushed the extra-inning runner, but I generally agree that the pitch clock is fine and players should just be ready on time
4:34
Disagree a bit with your premise. I wouldn't say that a delay of game penalty in the NFL or a change of possession in an NBA game is simply "inaction." Those can be really consequential developments, especially at the end of a game
Cory
4:35
If the Orioles have the best record in baseball at the end of 2023, how scared should the rest of baseball be for the next 5 years?
Anthony Franco
4:35
I don't think they even have to finish the season that strongly. They've made their point already. The position player depth is so good

4:36
Hi Anthony. Thanks for the chat. I have noticed that catchers seem to automatically throw a ball out of play if it touches dirt. In some cases, it seems as though the ball barely skims the ground. Isn't there a potential competitive advantage in not proactively taking a ball out of play when there's a small scuff and perhaps the umpire wouldn't notice? I wonder if any catchers are taking advantage of borderline balls in the dirt. Thanks!
Anthony Franco
4:36
Hmm, I think the determination is that the different grip is more harmful to the pitcher's command than whatever benefit you'd get from some small change to the pitch movement
4:37
I'm not 100% sure that's true but since virtually every MLB catcher seems to think it is and they know a hell of a lot more than I do, it probably is
Ryan
4:37
Does this work? Seattle trades Ty France,  Jose Callberro, Bryce Miller, Cole Young to St. Louis for Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Gorman and a PTBNL.
4:38
Herw is another deal. Seattle trades Harry Ford, Bryan Woo, and Gaby Gonzalez for Ohtani.
Anthony Franco
4:39
STL doesn't take the first one. I'd guess neither team would do the second. Can't see a chance the Angels trade him in division and given Dipoto's comments yesterday about not being in a position to take a big swing this year, doubt Seattle would want to give up that much

4:40
It looks like Yoan Moncada is on a rehab assignment. His career has lurched from near Mendoza line performance to all-star caliber. When he returns who will he be? Will he even be a regular? How do you assess players who are so inconsistent from year to year?
Anthony Franco
4:41
Yeah it's tough. The super volatile players are the hardest to pin down obviously. Think the best you can do is try to pin down what it is the player's underlying profile that keeps swinging wildly
4:42
In Moncada's case, it's usually health related. Seems like the injuries and spot-and-start seasons have sapped a lot of his power
4:43
Can't say I'm optimistic about him sorting it out this year, but he's young enough and still has a good enough awareness of the strike zone that I think there's a slightly above-average regular in there if he has a healthy offseason
Bernie
4:43
Do you think the Brewers should make small or big additions?
Anthony Franco
4:45
Depends on the players available obviously but in general, I think it's more the former. They need more offense out of virtually every bat-first position aside from left field

What's Scott Harris first trade deadline look for the Tigers? Buyers/Sellers? Will they get a lot in return?
Anthony Franco
4:46
I know Harris said they were keeping an open mind based on how the team plays through the deadline, but this is a seller for me. The offense is still really bad, I can't see them making a real run at the ALC
4:47
I think they've played well enough to avoid moving any of the controllable back-end relievers, but I'd move Lorenzen for sure and at least gauge the market on E-Rod given the likelihood he's opting out
Lefty
4:47
does Javy Baez have a rebound left in the tank? Do you see Giants taking on 30-50% of that salary and Tigers taking fringe prospects back that Harris may like from his SF days?
Anthony Franco
4:49
Javy's due a little less than $100MM over the next four years and is hitting .232/.271/.370 over the past two years. Even taking on 30% of the money should be too much for San Francisco
