Long term, who would you rather have as your starting catcher - Kirk or Moreno?
Anthony Franco
3:30
Kirk

With so much attention being paid to Juan Soto, does that make it easier for teams to trade for less flashy outfielders?
Anthony Franco
3:31
I don't think it has any effect. It's not like teams aren't going to work on contingency plans even while they talk to Mike Rizzo
Arthur Dent

The O’s are bit of a surprise for me sitting at .500 at the break.  Was expecting they’d be at least 10 under by now and that they’d be more willing sellers.  I know all the talk is about trading Mancini which makes sense, but any chance a team could snag Cedric Mullins or will Baltimore let things ride?
Anthony Franco
3:32
Yeah I don't see any way Mullins or Hays gets dealt now that Baltimore's made progress. Mancini, López or Santander could still go if they fall a couple games further, since they're shorter-term and not really core players
Michael

What do you make of the Shohei rumors to ATL reported by MLB - network?  Wouldn't this break the farm?
Anthony Franco
3:32
I've seen nothing substantive suggesting the Angels would consider dealing Ohtani this summer

Davis, Smith, Alvarez, Baty and Mauricio for Soto. Who says no.

Do you think Rodon will opt out of his second year with the Giants?  Thank you
Anthony Franco
3:33
Unless he gets hurt or completely faceplants over the next couple months, absolutely
3:34
I think he's going to get well over nine figures if he finishes the year healthy. I was the high guy on Rodón at MLBTR last winter (mostly incorrectly) and I'll probably be again

3:34
What is Peralta going to cost the yanks?  Is there a reliever the Backs have that can be bundled in a trade?
Anthony Franco
3:36
Peralta won't cost much. A low-level lottery ticket, guy ranked in the 25-40 range in the system. D-Backs have Ian Kennedy and Mark Melancon but neither's pitching well. Joe Mantiply's been their best reliever. They'd probably deal him but that'd require a mid-tier prospect at least
It just occurred to me all those guys once played for the Yankees
Mariner Moose
3:36
Trader Jerry has said in multiple interviews in recent days that the Mariners are looking to add "impact" more so than just depth at the deadline, particularly when it comes to the rotation, and acknowledged that they'll have to pay a premium to do so. I'd been cool on them going after a top-tier SP like Castillo or Montas -- the biggest 'buyer' names he's traded for at the deadline since 2016 include Cameron Maybin, David Phelps and Diego Castillo -- but are there any other arms expected to be on the market who would qualify as impact that would require giving up "premium" prospects?
Anthony Franco
3:37
Mahle's the other one usually in that tier. Rodón if the Giants fall out of it. Unlikely but not inconceivable. Similar story with Miami and Pablo López

Nats offered three top 100’s, a major leaguer, and 2 high ceiling guys from a team not in their division. Do you pull the trigger because it takes the money, FA, and injury risk off the table? Or hold onto the player that might be the next Stan Musial?
Anthony Franco
3:38
Yeah you do it. If you don't think you can keep Soto around long-term, which it doesn't seem like they do, then pull the trigger either now or next winter
3:40
If they're going to keep him just via arbitration, they'd have to get really aggressive this winter to build a better team around him. I wrote about the challenges with that a few weeks ago. Particularly with the payroll questions hanging over the franchise as they explore the sale, it's perfectly defensible to market Soto if you don't think you're getting an extension done
Dirty Sox
3:40
What is the worst move(s) the White Sox could make at the trade deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:40
Trading away Lucas Giolito?
I don't expect them to do that. Think they'll be pretty modest buyers when it's all said and done
Gee Whiz
3:41
What would it take for the Giants to sign Rodon to a 3 year extension?
Anthony Franco
3:41
I don't think he'll take three years unless you're juicing the AAV up near $40MM, which they're not going to want to do
Bob T
3:42
What do you think Tony Gwynn and Rod Carew would be worth in today’s market. I personally miss contact hitters who get on base, move runners along and don’t strikeout thirty percent of their at bats.
Anthony Franco
3:43
Well I think a big reason guys make far less contact is that pitching nowadays has gotten a lot better. That's not to denigrate Carew or Gwynn, who were obviously all-time greats, but I'm skeptical either of those guys would be able to maintain a sub-10% strikeout rate in today's game either
3:44
If we're just transplanting them in and assuming they'd put up the same numbers today as they did in their primes, though, they'd rightfully be regarded as top five to ten players in the sport and paid hundreds of millions of dollars

Better team in your opinion the Yankees with Juan Soto or the Yankees with Louis Castillo and Ian Happ.
Anthony Franco
3:45
The latter

Do you believe in the 2 years they will have expansion finished and the reconstruction of the Divisions. Do you believe they will Mix the Leagues since they are playing under the exact rules today? I believe that Cross Town rivals or interstate Rivals might prove to be interesting and reduce travel as well.
Anthony Franco
3:46
Expansion within two years? Definitely not. They want to get the Rays and A's stadiums sorted out first. I'd ballpark expansion closer to 2030

How do the Angels put a value on Shohei Ohtani? There is no way that they can afford to sign him with Trout and Rendon on the books. On the other hand, how could they possibly trade a generational player at this time when Trout is seemingly starting his decent? Considering the Arte Moreno Angels they will probably make the wrong move.
Anthony Franco
3:47
It's tough. Don't have to decide it now, but if they're still bad again by next year's trade deadline, I think you end up trading him
3:49
Feels like a $400M+ player to me, although obviously he's unprecedented in every way (and that assumes he's concerned with maximizing earning power, which he wasn't when he first came over). It's hard for me to see the Angels going to that level, but I'm sure they'll at least try to get something done first

Giants can and should trade for Soto then sign Judge in the off-season. Agree or disagree and why?
Anthony Franco
3:49
They'd be among the top contenders for either player but if you're hoping for both, probably going to be disappointed. There are a lot of teams out there to compete with
Philly A's
3:50
The Elvis Andrus situation could be a troubling one for a team that is shredding payroll like a blender sale on Amazon Prime Days.  Does EA still have value for a trade? Or DFA? Or will the A's start limiting his playing time to keep him under 550 PAs this year?   (Either of these scenarios will have other A's fans cry on how cheap the owner is, but I do like a bargain at Old Navy)
Anthony Franco
3:51
Yeah I think they're going to start cutting back his playing time to make sure that option doesn't vest. It'd put you in possible grievance territory but that stuff is so hard to prove and it's not like it's unjustifiable from a strict baseball sense for them to want to get a look at Nick Allen at some point
