Maybe he will -- the team has been rebuilding for most of his ownership tenure, so it's understandable they weren't pouring money into the MLB payroll -- but it's not a guarantee until they do it
4:31
Now if they do, Baltimore might have the brightest future in the division. Their group of controllable position players is probably the best in the division and might be top three in the sport. Haven't seen quite the same success on the pitching side yet

How concerned should the Rangers be about the number of innings Eovaldi and Heaney have pitched already?
Anthony Franco
4:33
I'm not any more concerned than I would've been preseason. Those guys have checkered health histories but they've had individual seasons of 180+ innings
Adding a depth starter would be nice because deGrom and Odorizzi are out for the year, but I'm not worried about Eovaldi and Heaney specifically

How are the Brewers not cutting bait with 1B and DH at this point? It's not working, they've had enough at bats, it's costing them the division.
Anthony Franco
4:35
Lack of immediate alternatives? The trade market at first base is pretty bad, especially among teams that are already committed to selling. Could try to jump early on Jeimer Candelario, but that's about it for guys I'd expect to be out there right now
4:36
They're real problems, though. I did something for the main site a couple weeks ago on Rowdy Tellez's struggles going back to May. Jesse Winker hasn't been good all year. Guess they're just biding their time until more options hit the market
4:37
If I were a Brewers fan, I'd be pulling for the Red Sox to fall out of it. I think Justin Turner would be a great fit there but Boston's not doing that unless they have to

Sorry for the non TR question but is fwar from Fangraphs and bwar from Baseball Reference?  Thanks!
Anthony Franco
4:37
That's correct

This year seems to have had an inordinate number of injuries.  Which teams do you consider to have been most affected by injuries?  Least affected?
Anthony Franco
4:39
Hmm, I'd have to take more time to really settle on the answer to this. Top of my head, I'd probably say Toronto for the team has done the best so far
Most affected: Rays (pitching in particular), Dodgers, Angels of late come to mind

Thanks again, Anthony.  Hope all is well with you.  OK, you probably have dozens of questions like this.  You're Perry Minasian.  What do you do?
Anthony Franco
4:40
(Perry Minasian = Angels' GM)
4:41
Boring answer but it's true for now: wait three weeks. Pretty tough upcoming schedule, still in contention but falling fast with a bunch of injuries. It's a tough spot
A week ago, I was all for pushing everything in to win now. Trade one of Logan O'Hoppe or Edgar Quero, push for the top rental starters available, etc.
4:42
I'd hold off on that now until I know where the team sits on July 30. Trout's injury, in particular, could unfortunately change the calculus entirely
What if...
4:42
All the wildcards are won out of the AL (B)east...
Anthony Franco
4:43
Not impossible but I think one of Houston/Texas gets a WC spot

How much longer can the Red Sox stay with Tristan Casas, who after a hot streak, is still hitting .220 and not fielding well?
Anthony Franco
4:44
Casas had a pretty good June, at least offensively. I agree you'd like to see more out of him, but I'd still rather bet on him to get going than turn things over to someone like Bobby Dalbec

Christopher Morel - is the power for real? What's your 2nd half predictions for him?
Anthony Franco
4:46
I don't think he's Mark McGwire but he definitely has huge power upside. Can't fake 15 homers in 46 games without serious physical gifts
4:48
Think he'll always be kind of a roller-coaster performer -- sort of Javy Báez-ish but without the elite shortstop defense. The tools are awesome but there's still a ton of swing-and-miss there. He was scorching hot for a while last season and then fell off down the stretch. I don't think he's a markedly different player than he was then

I had a pretty good month and it appears I’ve been getting better each day.  Should I have been invited to the future’s game?
Anthony Franco

Futures Game is for players below the major league level

Could a trade of Flaherty or Montgomery be enough to get a top prospect like Owen White, Gavin Stone, Emmett Sheehan, or AJ Smith-Shawver? If not, what else would it take? Thanks, Anthony.
Anthony Franco
4:49
I don't think they'd get any of those guys for a rental. Flaherty's kind of a fringe value trade candidate anyways

One analyst say that he preferred Langford over Crews because he thought that Langford would transition to wooden bats better than Crews. Whether that's true or not....wood vs. metal bats seems like it might be an important part of evaluating college talent, yet I have never heard it discussed. What do you think?
Anthony Franco
4:52
I don't know about it mattering for Crews v. Langford specifically, but scouting departments and prospect analysts definitely factor this in. It's a big reason why players' performances in the Cape Cod league (and other summer wood bat leagues) the summer before their draft year matters so much about their placement on draft rankings going into the following college season

How big of a return could Scherzer get.  I’m assuming the Mets would pay down most of his salary
Anthony Franco
4:53
It's a fascinating one right? If the Mets agree to pay down the majority of his salary (and next year's, if he doesn't opt out), then the return should be as good or better as any rental starter would get. Maybe a back of the top 100 type
4:54
We've never seen a team eat that kind of money on one player, but who knows? Steve Cohen has done a lot of stuff no other owner would do

off the top of your head the most plausible trade to occur this deadline that nobody has mentioned yet.
Anthony Franco
4:55
Ha, I just did a ranking of trade candidates with basically every interesting player I found plausible
Maybe the Guardians trade one of Logan Allen or Tanner Bibee for offensive help instead of Bieber or Civale? I don't think that's likely, but it wouldn't be completely stunning

If looking for a young pitcher who might be on the cusp of being a solid rotation piece for my reds.  What are your thoughts on JP sears from Oakland?  What would he cost me? can you think of anyone else who fits that description?  I have the prospects to make it happen!
Anthony Franco
4:57
Sears is fine but I'd be very surprised if he moves. Oakland needs some kind of long-term pitching plan and he's got less than one year of service
