deGrom, Díaz and Walker I'd guess re-sign or (in Walker's case) accept the QO
Astros fan
3:24
Should the Astros give Bronson a shot in center? He,s having a good year at AAA and the Astros are not getting any production from Meyers.
Anthony Franco
3:25
I'd still rather just give the job to McCormick. Brinson's still striking out a bunch, which has always been his problem. I don't think that's ever going to change
Bob
3:25
Think the Mets go after Judge? Or any non NYY team makes a serious pursuit? Sorta seems like the kind of thing Moreno would want to do
Anthony Franco
3:27
It's hard for me to see the Yankees letting him walk, but there'll definitely be other teams involved this winter. Usual suspects probably: Dodgers, Giants, Rangers perhaps, maybe the Mets and Red Sox on the periphery but they feel less likely to me
Jose Barrero
3:27
Does this "Barrero is now our shortstop" thing surprise you too after his dismal showing in AAA?  What are the possible outcomes?  If he plays poorly, the Reds move on to somebody else and he returns to the minors next season?  If he plays surprisingly well, then what?
Anthony Franco
3:28
A little bit but I also see the logic of this being two months where they can afford to give guys a chance to fail since the season's already over. I do think they'll look for a veteran shortstop this offseason either way, although the quality of that player probably depends on how Barrero fares down the stretch
3:29
If he's awful, then yeah, I think you need a new everyday shortstop and assume Barrero's going back to Louisville. If he's pretty good for a couple months, then a depth utility type makes more sense just in case he falls flat again early next season
Don
3:30
What are your thoughts so far on Keibert Ruiz?
Anthony Franco
3:30
Pretty much the player I've thought he'd be. Never whiffs but also doesn't walk or hit for power, so the overall upside is limited. Fringy defense
3:31
He's a decent starting catcher but not going to be a star, I don't think
Marcell Ozuna
3:31
What do the Braves do with him?
Anthony Franco
3:32
I'd cut him after this season, barring some kind of crazy final two months. He looks awful and has more or less not been very good since 2017 aside from a monster showing in a two-month season that looks like a fluke
3:33
Regardless of how one feels about whether he should've gotten another chance after his domestic violence suspension, I don't know what he's even bringing to the table from an on-field perspective that warrants keeping him around
RAGBRAI
3:33
Can Bryant be counted on for anything this season, or do the Rockies just rest him and get him healthy for next year?
Anthony Franco
3:34
They're not ruling him out officially but he's in a walking boot and has no set timetable for a return. I'd be surprised if he plays again this year
RAGBRAI
3:35
ROS Montero in Colorado or Stott? Going forward in '23?
Anthony Franco
3:35
Stott on both accounts
Buck
3:35
Diaz pitched 4 innings in 4 days against the Braves.  Later Bassitt through 118 pitches.  Is there a chance Buck pushes guys too hard in the 2nd half.  Could it explain why his teams often exit early in the playoffs
Anthony Franco
3:37
I'm kind of skeptical this is a better explanation for Showalter's relative lack of postseason success than the playoffs just being fluky, but I guess I see where you're coming from
Giantsphan
3:37
Hey Anthony, rather than ask my once-every-six-week question about your mojo towards the Giants…I’ll ask this:  the Giants need to retool their roster pretty seriously this offseason (IMO). How do they do that?  Do you think trying to sign a few big FAs (Judge, T. Turner, Mancini) will help them turn things around?  What else can they do as they seem stuck in mediocrity at this point????  Thank you
Anthony Franco
3:38
Yeah I think it's time for them to go get a star position player: Turner, Judge, Correa -- somebody of that ilk. After 2023, they've got just Disco on the books for $12MM. Next year's at around $89MM and likely to drop into the mid-60's once Rodón opts out
3:40
Going to have to replace or re-sign Rodón and then add at least one marquee position player. There's room for say, both Turner and Josh Bell honestly. I agree that next year's team is going to (and should) look a lot different
3:41
A lot of what they did this year was try to preserve continuity, probably for a season longer than Zaidi and his group expected, because of how well they played last year. I thought it was the right call and (obviously) shared their optimism for a long while that they could pull it off. But now that it looks like they're an average-ish team that's really old, it's time for an overhaul
Bob
3:41
This winter, what trade value will Dakota Hudson have? Or is he more of a non-tender candidate?
Anthony Franco
3:42
I don't think he'd be non-tendered but there's not going to be much trade value either (a couple mid-tier prospects at best). I expect they'll ultimately just keep him around, particularly if Wainwright retires
3:43
They obviously prioritized ground-ball arms last offseason. The only thing Hudson does well is get grounders, so he's probably more valuable to St. Louis than anyone else
Chaim
3:43
Has Tanner Houck locked himself in as my closer? Or could we move Whitlock there? Or do we search the market in the offseason? Or how about MY BOY JOHN SCHRIEBER?!
Anthony Franco
3:44
It is incredible how good Schreiber's gotten. He was throwing like 89 and getting massacred in Detroit, what a turnaround
3:45
Whitlock probably stays in the fireman role, and I'm guessing they'll try to stretch Houck back out next winter as at least a rotation possibility. So sure, I could buy Schreiber being a ninth-inning option there
3:46
Boston's going to add bullpen help over the winter and maybe they just sign David Robertson or someone with closing experience. But Schreiber's emergence means that's probably not a prerequisite, I agree
JDP
3:46
The Orioles are getting ready to take that next step. One area I'm interested in is their bullpen. Guys like Tate, Bautista, Perez, Akin, and Krehbiel have all been great for them, as was Lopez prior to his trade. Should they go after a big name closer next year and make theat bullpen even scarier, or will they ask one of these guys to step up?
Anthony Franco
3:47
I think it's Bautista's job for now
3:48
The rest of the roster still has issues: rotation depth, could probably use an infielder even with Henderson and Westburg on the horizon. Targeting those areas feels like a bigger concern than trying to create a super bullpen, which is really hard to sustain year over year anyways
RAGBRAI
3:48
Jake McCarthy seems to be holding his own.  He seems fine for this year but is there a fantasy future for him in AZ?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Probably gets squeezed out once Corbin Carroll arrives
Decent player,  but he's also not at the level of Varsho, Carroll or Alek Thomas
Brett Baty
3:49
This guy has gotten better and better all season.  What do you see the Mets doing about third base next year?
Anthony Franco
3:50
Yeah I expect it'll be Baty's job pretty early. He's going on the 40-man this offseason anyways. If he mashes for two months in Syracuse to close out this year, he might just be the Opening Day third baseman next season
Josh
3:50
If Kodai Senga comes to MLB, what kind of market is he looking at and what kind of contract could he get?
